Bank Instructions.Dvd or Book??

dvd and book in combination, i'm in for either or both.

i bought freddy the beard's stuff, but have never popped it into the tv.

i'm pretty good at banks, and i have been reluctant to watch dvd's or read any instructional stuff, fearing that my head will get in the way of my feel for the cuts, speed and english. any thoughts on that?

I'm in for whatever you come up with, John.
My vote would always be for a dvd AND book. On a video you can better see what actually happens - but it happens rapidly. I think the opportunity to see the same thing in print/diagram aids in really nailing home the nuts and bolts of what else can be possible based on what you're learning.
Learn a shot, and you know a shot. Get comprehension of what makes that shot work, and you can develop a library of possibilities.

I'm in for whatever you decide John... lots of great ideas here. I'm sure it will be huge hit.

By the way, Young William is the last person to defeat you at the DCC... back in, uh 2008, before your two undefeated championship years. I don't think he needs anymore more of your advice!

Hello Bill,First I just want to thank everyone for their time to give me alot of good tips, advice and thoughts! I appreciate them a bunch!! With all the good Ideas I think I will do both. Some kind of book to go along with the dvds. Due to there being a huge difference in making a bank shot vs playing bankpool. Playing the game of bankpool might be better put In writing because there will have to be alot of explaning, theories, and methods. For example: End game scenarios.I think I can put that Info down In writing.Would you rather read or watch and listen? I sure didn't think this would be that hard, but when I do It or them I want it to be the best I can.

Ok Bill,I'll try to answer some of your ?s now. You have some good ?s by the way. IMHO short rack banks Is not really what I would call bankpool.
Short rack Is just mainly a shoot out. There Is not alot of moving and safeties. There Is some but nothing like full rack. In full rack you have more
chances to invent banks, moves, and safes. That's what I really like about full rack.(Alot more thinking) and inventing and the knowledge that comes from playing some of the best bankpool players In the world Is worth alot more to me In full rack. That's one reason I prefer bankpool over say 9ball.
Knowledge Is HUGE In bankpool. Not so much In 9ball or 10 ball. You can leaarn how to play 9 ball almost over night...and they can luck out on ya.I hate the fact that I have to just break wide open and HOPE I get a shot!!!.But not with bankpool. As you can tell, I'm not a huge fan of 9ball or 10ball. Ok to my full rack bankpool break..I use the straight pool break to where you put the cball about 12in.
from the side rail and shoot the cball to hit the corner ball and spin the cball 3 rails and back to the end rail. If hit just right the 2 corner balls will go right back In the rack and the cball will be froze or close to the bottom rail.leaving your opp no shot.He wiil just have to play safe, and that's where the fun begins. Not much luck In bankpool. Thanks again everybody.

Thanks for the reply. I agree your end games thoughts, ideas, strategies and theories would be great in written form with some diagrams. A video is great if you are demonstrating how to make a bank.
I agree that short rack bank pool is a shoot out. Full Rack is a totally different animal!
I like to play full rack bank pool and break them wide open. It’s fun trying to finding banks to go thru all the traffic. I look for two rail shots where you bank off the long rail, end rail and then into the side pocket. It’s also fun trying to figure out where to leave the CB when there are potentially 15 different ball to shoot at.

Good Luck at the DCC!
Bill

I would prefer DVD but for godsakes please have it captioned for those of us that are hearing impaired. I haven't seen an instructional DVD yet that was captioned and it drives me nuts LOL.

Hey Larry,Thanks for your thoughts. I don't think It should bother you any to watch and try to learn what ever you can. Thanks,John B.

Bank Instructions DVD or book??

Hi JB,

I agree with the majority of the posters here DVD is best, while a book can be good also as in Freddy the Beards (banking with the beard), I find after looking at it once or twice it gets put down to collect dust, whereas a video can be watched over and over,

Looking forward to your DVD.

John

Hey Worm,If he gets em,believe me, It's going to cost HIM more than most!! I think I remember that straight shootin son of gun!!! He cost me a
bunch of $ I'm still a little hot.Man, he shot me down like I was nothin.
Did he know who he was playing??? I guess he did and just didn't care,uh?
LOL. John B.

A version of the book and video that could be uploaded to a smartphone so it could be with me all the time. If you are ever in the Denver area please PM me, I would love to get a lesson from you.

"Feel" is critical for banking success; however, IMO, "feel" can be developed faster and with more confidence if the player has a complete understanding of all of the banking effects. It also helps to have bank aiming systems for different types of shots, especially when your "feel"-based aim doesn't look quite right or when your confidence is low. On VEPS-IV: Banks, Kicks, and Advanced Shots, we present many of the most common and useful systems and demonstrate the pertinent effects that require adjustment.

Dave

Hello Bill,Thanks for your input bud. Something I have to point out though.
In real fullrack bankpool you have to bank a ball before you can shoot again. What that means is...You can't break them "wideopen" hence the phrase: ( you have to bank a ball before you can shoot again) That's real old school bankpool.FYI And please don't beat me again.Thank you, John B.

I think people are interested in Mr. Brumback's view on banking - not Dr. Dave's :) You posting banking concepts within a thread regarding John's future DVD on banking concepts is like me telling Ron Jeremy how to bang.

Book and dvd

If you want you can put like a PDF on the DVD for ppl who want to read it.

John, having an instructional on bank pool from you would be just great. I suggest you go Freddy's The Beard way, both a book and a DVD illustrating the principles written on paper. Or even extended a bit farther.

Thank you. No hard feelings though. Good funny example too.lol
