New Fatboy Ten Ball thread

There has been so much interest in this year's Fatboy Ten Ball, Greg and I are seriously considering expanding the field to 32 players. I have ten already on a waiting list. I wouldn't do this if I didn't think we could get a full field of 32. If we fall short, I will go back to the first sixteen players. I don't want any byes! I know this may mess up the calcutta in the action room, but they can always pay off based on who goes the farthest.

This would mean an extra $8,000 in the purse and we would now pay eight sports, instead of four. Two wins to get in the money. So for all you guys out there who are interested in playing or backing someone contact me immediately! jayhelfert@yahoo.com or (310)370-3994 H. (310)710-6250 C.

So, what does this mean to the players if you expand to 32? Will they play 2 or 3 rounds per night? or will play more nights? I don't know if Action Players who also happens to be the top guys would like to have more nights tied up and taken away from their personal action nights or even play more rounds, which means literally nothing afterward or not much to rest for next Derby Tournament schedule...

I vote to expand the players if action players want to gamble then they will be gambling not playing in a tournament but the payoff for first is such a great amount they are willing to take the time in the short tournament instead of playing long sets for sometimes not as much.

Very good idea. I hope you fill it up. Great job by you and Fatboy.

No! Although, it's purely my speculation I am sure that players like SVB, Ocullo, Appleton & Busty who are heavy hitting action hounds signed up to play this event because they only have to play one round a night. This leaves them free to match up in high stake matches after if they like. Trust me, I've seen these guys match up lot higher than for the first place amount that didn't go for days!

couldn't they just add more days to the event?

Even if... The problem is that Fatboy Challenge starts midnight, after all tournament play are done. So if someone is done with their play 9 pm or sooner they can't start to gamble unless your action is willing to stop at midnight and wait for you for 2-3 hours... I guess if they are nice enough to do that great! But I don't know how many people who's stuck 10 g will be gracious enough to let you break away to play a tourney and wait for you...

I don't think many players want to have more than 3 nights 'Reserved' for Fatboy Challenge. It's bad idea to change after the field has filled with an impression of certain criterea...

But who knows, I'm not Shane or Daz...maybe they might like it... I'm just saying I wouldn't like it - if it was me.

IF we can get 32 players, we will add one additional night to the schedule. I am very doubtful that any one of our original sixteen players would oppose adding sixteen players and $8,000 to the purse. I mentioned to most of them that we were considering expanding the field to 32 players next year, and I got only favorable responses to that. What we are attempting here is to accelerate that process and do it this year. Like I said if we cannot get a full field of 32 players, we will then go back to our original sixteen. There will be no byes!

What has happened this year is there is a great deal of interest in this event, and Greg and I are trying to make it more than a secondary event at DCC. It may end up some day as being the most important event at Derby City each year. There are plans in the works to add even more money in the future to this event.

Did the 16 guys already entered get a chance to weigh in on this ? I know if I put a guy in a 16 man event that is what I planned on him playing.

Why was the added money doubled and the entry fee cut in half this year? It always filled at $1000. Could have had that extra $8K added without the hassle of the extra nights play.

I miss when the Derby didnt have 10 side events going simultaneously. It was a tournament and after the tournament players matched up. Now there is no time for the top guys to do that because they are all chasing a little added money on a parlay.

I dont know how many times I have heard horses ask a top guy to play something small like a $1000-$2000 set for them and the player says he was way too tired or he had to play this side event or that one. At the end of the day I think while all these are good for a few players they are starting to hurt the event as a whole.

The Fatboy is a good thing I just think the event creep (event creep being that more and more small things getting added which detracts from the original reason the event was created) at Derby should be held in check.

They have an opportunity to weigh in right now! Once again, most (if not all) of them know that we are planning to increase this event to 32 players next year anyway. By the way, the entry fee was $1,000 the first year and $500 last year.

What makes the Fatboy special is that it features the premier players playing long races at a very difficult game. This alone makes it unlike any other event at DCC. You might call it "creep." I call it PROGRESS!

I like the idea of a small elite field which was the original idea. I don't think the idea of a baby 10 ball division is a good idea. Which it looks like where its headed.

Like a lot of things just because you can doesn't always mean you should.

Personally I would rather see the entry raised and keep it small. That adds value to the spots available. But the players and backers will decide if they like it or not and then it will go from there I guess.

This made me chuckle though : "What makes the Fatboy special is that it features the premier players playing long races at a very difficult game" Thats a pretty damn good idea. Maybe someone will even do something nutty like it stream it. That would be cutting edge.

well that is true just like the svb/efren and svb/bustamante in the same week for 75K or more in the middle can't recall exact figures. That does pay alot more so how about starting the event at 10 or 11 pm so that everyone is done by 1-2 am for the night and that still leaves time for side action?

Do 16 players know they have the opportunity to weigh in right now? I'm not trying to be a smart ass in anyway. Just a sincere question since it's like 6 am in UK and most pool players have hard time checking or replying to emails...How long until you make the decision? I think most of them would be on a flight next day or so...:frown:

FYI Greg would like to see this event someday be a points event! That adds significant importance to it for all the players. I hear what your saying and I also like a small elite field. I at first resisted change to the Fatboy as well, but sometimes things evolve and I'm willing to let it grow and see what happens. Just because you can doesn't always mean you shouldn't either! ;)

I'll see them all in a couple of days. If I encounter negative feedback the field will remain at sixteen. I'm always an advocate for the players, and respect their wishes. It's their opinion that matters most to me. As it should be.

So this will eventually evolve into double elem format? I didn't think they allowed single elem tourney to be points event... I could be wrong.

I see your point now, and I hope all the 16 players involved get give their input on this.

Most world championship events in recent years played single elimination either from 64 or 32 players onward. This is nothing new.
