New Fatboy Ten Ball thread

I'll see them all in a couple of days. If I encounter negative feedback the field will remain at sixteen. I'm always an advocate for the players, and respect their wishes. It's their opinion that matters most to me. As it should be.

That's better. I agree it should be up to the players :)

Most world championship events in recent years played single elimination either from 64 or 32 players onward. This is nothing new.

J.H.

But, they usually start out with double elim or round robin format and yes, single elim for elite handfuls ... But this will be straight single elimination? Will they allow it to be points event?

Just learning, Jay - inquiring mind ;)

Not yet. Still needs more added money!
Ask that guy standing (or sleeping) next to you. He knows!

I know it needs more money added to be points event, but you already said plan is to add more money.

I wasn't aware straight single elimination tourney could be points event. I thought I heard somewhere it can't be...

I enjoy the format of the fatboy challenge when it is 16 players. With the original 16 players, winning two tough matches wins them 4 1/2 to 1 on their entry fee. With the newly proposed format, winning two tough matches only nets you 2 to 1 on the entry. In my opinion, the lure to the fatboy challenge is the good odds on the money.

I agree that whatever the players want should be what happens. They are the guys that are living off the money. If I had my choice, I like the sixteen man format with $1000 entry. A 32 man entry would be ok, depending on the people entered. The worry is that 32 becomes 64 and so on to the point where it gets watered down.

BTW, I love Justin's comment..."Maybe someone will do something nutty and stream it". LMAO.

Points event disadvantage

fyi greg would like to see this event someday be a points event! That adds significant importance to it for all the players. I hear what your saying and i also like a small elite field. I at first resisted change to the fatboy as well, but sometimes things evolve and i'm willing to let it grow and see what happens. Just because you can doesn't always mean you shouldn't either! ;)

I think making this a points event would br unfair to the other players not playing/invited to the fb challenge. In order to qualify for the 'master of the table' award, you must play in all three major disciplines(banks, 1p, 9ball). That means that the fb challenge players have an extra event to accumulate points while the others do not. We love that an extra event is being produced, its just that it should be a non-points event. Its only fair!

Peace

My two cents.....

I think that the fatboy is one of the most intriguing events at the DCC, however if you want it to be an "Elite" field why not make it an invitational. I personally would like to see it as a similar format to the World Pool Masters (before last year) only playing a long race in 10-Ball. I think that if you look at this years field (no offense to anyone in particular) but their is "dead money" in this format, compared to who is on the waiting list.

I disagree with the idea of expanding the field for this year (unless everyone involved already is ok with it) however I do like the idea of trying to make a BCA Ranking 10 Ball event at the DCC, obviously Logistically it would have to be worked to somehow not effect the current set-up, but you have most of the top pros together in the same place at the same time so I don't see why not. The more ranking events the better.

Excellent point! Being involved in backing one of the entrants, I will earn less money on the two wins and one loss scenario..:frown:

I can also understand Justins concern, with all the side events going on, there will be less action for TAR to stream..

I agree wi your second paragraph but disagree on the invitational part. I feel that the format should not be changed unless EVERY person who has put up $ is contacted and agrees to the change. If it is not unanimous then no change. If they say they don't care then that is tantamount to acceptance. Good Luck. I know its another thankless job well done....

I'm talking about ranking points for the world and USA rankings. This has nothing to do with the Master Of The Table awards.

I am in the same boat you are.

I would prefer the event stay at the original 16 due to the dimished return for 2-1 but also for the minimal difference at the top for 1st and 2nd comparatively.
I can also understand Justins concern, with all the side events going on, there will be less action for TAR to stream..

That is another factor I had not even thought of although I think he will still get enough regardless.

I agree that the entered players should provide the answer to expansion...perhaps with the option to withdraw, shouild their opposition to increased field size be in the minority.

Smaller fields and single elimination tourneys can still qualify for BCA points.

Here's an excerpt from http://www.azbilliards.com/explanation.html (which furthermore discusses added money requirements, strength of field, etc.):

"The basic points system that we will use is the same one used by the Camel Tour back in the 90’s... For single-elimination events the points are awarded as follows: 1st = 140 points, 2nd = 120, 3-4th = 100, 5-8th = 70, 9-16th = 50, 17-32nd = 35, 33-64th = 20, 65+ = 0 points. "

"Fields less than 64 players will be penalized 10% of their points. Fields less than 48 players will be penalized 15% of their points. Fields of greater than 128 players will be given a point bonus of 10%."

There has been so much interest in this year's Fatboy Ten Ball, Greg and I are seriously considering expanding the field to 32 players. I have ten already on a waiting list. I wouldn't do this if I didn't think we could get a full field of 32. If we fall short, I will go back to the first sixteen players. I don't want any byes! I know this may mess up the calcutta in the action room, but they can always pay off based on who goes the farthest.

This would mean an extra $8,000 in the purse and we would now pay eight sports, instead of four. Two wins to get in the money. So for all you guys out there who are interested in playing or backing someone contact me immediately! jayhelfert@yahoo.com or (310)370-3994 H. (310)710-6250 C.

glad you greg decided this...not that i count for shit
