Watched the Premier League Darts the other night and man the arena was absolutely packed ! and the atmosphere was total electric. The production was great and it was just all done so well.

Darts is such a simple game but i love watching it and i don't play it at all

How come Darts is doing better than any cuesport ?

Cheaper to get into the sport. Physically easier to do in terms of hand eye coordination. Dont have to worry about English to get the dart in line for the next shot. Its kind of like playing pool without a cue ball...:)

Cant answer the question exactly but local barmaid told me about two weeks ago Dart Player's drink 3 times as much Cerveza than Pool players...so when the Dart League is on they close the pool tables near them...even though there is sufficient room...since they make more business....Ps...this is at a Pool Hall by the way...

Darts is huge over in the UK, but I wonder why. Actually, why is any sport popular in any given region? Why is soccer popular throughout the world, but has very little footing compared to the more "American" sports such as basketball or football? I have no idea.

I was watching this, just to see if I could find appeal in darts. And I got to admit, they make it seem exciting. The crowd was going wild. I wish it was ok for the crowd to get all wild like that in pool.

And also, I was looking up Phil Taylor. Apparently, back in 05, a prize in the UK open was 501 bottles of Budweiser. A very colorful prize.

sponsorship = visibility

because our governments listen to commie organizations that say it's improper for sport to be funded by tobacco companies.

snooker in the UK came across a major hurdle when they lost tobacco sponsorship for some of their major events for the very same reason. their sport still hasn't recovered to the same level of prize money.

i think if pro's drank while they played, we'd have a better chance at securing sponsorship from a major beverage sponsor ie. budwieser (they spend a pile of dough for marketing through sporting events).

hell it's not like we can fund any big tournaments with first place money over 50k with money from pool table an cues. a bigger market needs to be attracted. what else does pool have other than booze.

i bet after three beers and some shots even i could give svb the 8..........:Djk(of course that's cause he doesn't drink:p)

Simple to learn and doesn't take years to get better. Nowadays people don't have allot of extracurricular time to waste and this fits current thinking in todays society.

Ya can't shoot darts unless you drink beer. Period. If you try to not indulge , your a sissy. Even the pros in tournaments drink beer. Or at least make it look like they do. The most repeated words in darts are," Play ya for a pitcher,"

Island Drive,
Agreed! That is why I like banks, while being an exacting sort of game like other pool games there is a great disparity of skill levels closer to the bottom rung of the ladder.
I would hope people wouldnt take it as serious although the bank games I play get pretty serious.

What I think pool has that is closest to darts in nature is:

Speed Pool

Maybe there should be more speed pool events, you cant sweat it, just got to do it.
A friend and I were playing 9 ball one time and neither of us were doing all that hot and then we both decided Speed Pool we did 26 racks in an hour and played better shots not sweating it and we could both tell it improved our game and you sort of were able to forgive yourself for making mistakes and therefore---fun.

I think one of the problems is the games currently being played. If you watch old video of straight pool matches the crowd really gets into it when someone goes on a big run. In fact, even on the video you can feel the excitement and tension growing when someone gets through a few racks because everyone wants to see the 100 ball run.

I understand the move to nineball for tv, but I think it has hurt pool. Things were different when the game was straight pool.

I wish darts were that big in the USA. I've been playing steel tip darts for 8 years, and the only way for me to find competition is driving 60 miles for a $10 tournament on a sunday. Not worth the drive for me.

I started playing pool because more people play it.

I don't think it is. I just spent three years in London, and saw a lot more snooker on tv than the darts events. Darts are cheaper to get into, and they seem to have a bigger amateur league than snooker, but there's alot more money in endorsements, tv coverage and the betting parlors with snooker. There's a move afoot to put on a couple of roudy snooker events, with all the beer, singing, cheering etc. that the darts events have; should be an interesting angle. Ronnie O'Sullivan has worked with promoters to have an abbreviated lightning game designed to make the game a little more dynamic...add smoke, music, models in skimpy dresses and you have something different. We'll have to see how that goes...

Sid Waddel won me over doing some commentary at the World Pool (9 Ball) Championships. I really enjoy his style. His voice and exuberance are pretty entertaining. I Googled him & found out he does lots of Darts commentary. I never seen a single darts match in my life, but if Mr. Waddel was calling them, I'd be sure to tune it. He could make it fun.

I don't know that it is doing better. But it certainly helps that they had fairly strong leadership in barry hearn for a while. Like him or not, he certainly is a good promoter.

When he was promoting the World 9 ball Championships, it was top shelf (for pool) productions and in Canada we were getting nine installments of 2 hr highlight packages during primetime. Good thing the WPA has moved away from Matchroom sport because who needs that kind of exposure?

Darts is the only sport in the world i can think of where there is absolutely no luck or interference from referees/judges/officials

It's indoors so there is no weather element, it's purely who is better at the game

Part of your explanation is correct. Darts has been very big in the UK for a long time. The World Championships along with other major events are televised live over there. The added bonus they also have these days is that Barry Hearn (My idol) likes the sport and sees the opportunity in it. Matchroom do not do anything half asses. I think they also do fishing and if Matchroom say fishing is a great sport to watch them I would watch what they have to offer. Hell those guys could probably make a one legged ass kicking contest a exciting and classy production and the biggest thing on tv if they wanted to. JMO :)
