I just read this article on AzBilliards Main Page about Mika Immonen topping the BCA points list: http://www.azbilliards.com/2000storya.php?storynum=8486

If the BCA is the North American representative to the world pool organizational entity, why would a player from Finland be on the BCA's point list?

I had thought the purpose of the point list was to determine player invitations to high-profile tournaments. Does the BCA point list provide ranking to players from around the world that are not from North America?

Hi JAM!

I kind of think of it this way. The BCA points list, at least as I understand it, is a ranking of players who have played in a series of events. The ranking is based, solely, on performance and not country or origin. Should it be called something else? Yeah, probably.

Best to you and Keith!

Mika lives in USA and has done so for many years. Should he travel to Europe and play Eurotour just to get a ranking?

Several players from countries outside Europe have played on Eurotour. They all get a ranking here, based on their performance - their nationality has nothing to do with that.

Then he should play on the US Mosconi Cup team. I mean, our country is good enough for him to earn a living in.

This makes me think of the Olympics, of which i'm a junkie. I love how you'll hear about how good the top athletes of all of these other countries are, only to find out that 90% of them are living and training in the US for pretty much all of their lives. That kind of defeats the purpose of the Olympics in my opinion.

The BCA points list reflects the performance of all players who perform within our shores. When invites go out they go out to the Americans on the list according to their position on the list. If we have an abundance of slots we also will offer one to the highest-ranking foreign player on the list. Of late we have not had an abundance of slots.

Thanks for the explanation.

I hope the European governmental body includes American competitors in their ranking system.

I do wonder what the equivalent of the BCA is in Europe. Does anyone know? I would love to learn more.:)

The European Pocket Billiard Federation is the European federation. They go by the initials EPBF. I am not aware of any Americans who play on a regular basis in their events.

Noone on a regular basis. Recent years there have been guest appearences by SVB, Mike Sigel, and the occasional filipino, japanese, argentinian, thai etc. player passing through..

Americans who have played recent years:
1. Boening-van, Shane
2. Cliff, Steve
3. Francis, Nigel
4. Johnes, Dieter
5. Johns, Dieter
6. Khan, Carl
7. Miller, Michael
8. Monchocourt, Joseph
9. Sigel, Mike
10. Smith, Del

I believe most of these are americans who live in Europe, except SVB and Sigel.

Just curious if there was an abundance of slots for the recent World 8 Ball tournament? The championship's website had Hohmann listed on there as being there via a BCA invite. Is he a citzen now? I know he has been here for awhile but was wondering. Or did the others on the list turn the invites down? Or did the tournament site have a typo?
Thanks.
