That was some great up date. Congrats to everyone who ran that great event and the players. Don't understand why they would open the doors and let that cold in during the finials. That was wrong. Unless I missed the info while reading the comments. Wasn't there an Armature 14.1 contest? If so, what were some of the runs on their attempts?

From what I understand, the Straight Pool Challenge was played on a table in the main arena rather than on one of the two tables set up for the Challenge out on the Expo floor. In the process of breaking down the arena the doors had to be opened to haul out equipment, thereby lowering the temperature inside the arena.

Thanks to Charlie and everyone else involved in making this event possible.

When you get some time, Charlie, I would appreciate it if you would post some data from this event. I guess Mika had the highest single attempt (114) and the highest single "buy-in" (252, after 4 attempts rather than 5). But how about posting the scores for all the other qualifiers. I'd even like to see all of their buy-in scores, not just the ones that got them into the top 8 qualifiers.

What was the total number of buy-ins? How many single attempts were there from 75-99? How about 50-74?

We've often heard stories of the greats who are able to snap off high runs at will, or at least with a high frequency. I have a hunch that events like this are showing quite a different result -- that high runs are tough to come by, even for great players. I know the conditions were tough for this event -- high humidity, probably lots of people milling around, tough tables (?), etc. But the results would still be of interest. Just think how much interest there is in statistical results in all the other sports. Why not create some here?

Congratulations on a nice event.

From what you guys have been writing, it appears that you had a heckuva lot of traffic, in addition to some pretty good runs.

It sounds like there may have been plenty of spectators. I noticed Gene said the other day that he had to explain the game to more than one person. I suspect this is a great way to initiate new people to the game of 14.1. It does not hurt that the spectators see people like Nick Varner, John Schmidt, Darren Appleton, Mika, Max and others playing the game. They know who these players are and might think, if its a good game for those guys, maybe I should learn it.

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts after you have had time to digest all of what happened. Once again, kudos to all involved.

Hey Dennis yes it was a great event and I feel very lucky because it went smoothly again because of Steve Heather Mike P Mark Henry and Ron. They kept the booth going at all hours.

To address the finals the comcast people had to get their equipment out and if you think the players were cold that was nothing. Steve and I were sitting in front of the door doing the live stream where they were going in and out from lol. I was literally shivering while I was speaking.

My overall thoughts on the event is that next year I want it to be bigger. More tables more prize money etc. Now that is not to say that if the event stayed the same size I wouldn't be happy but that being said I would like to have at least one more table to generate more turn over.

It would be like celebrity endorsements for 14.1.

Sometimes it attracted "too many" people and the crowd overflowed into adjacent booths - which was repeatedly discouraged by Charlie on the public address system. Oh yeah, Charlie on the public address system - that was another big draw!

"Ladies and gentleman, I'd like to turn your attention once again to the Fury 14.1 Challenge booth where we now have not 1, but 2 US Open 9-ball champions playing - one table #1..."

Hi-Run at BCAPL Nationals

Just to let everyone know, Charles and Steve are giving us assistance in having a similar event at the BCAPL National 8-Ball event in May.

Held at the Riviera Hotel & Casino, from May 12- 22, 2011.
We will have 2 - 9' Diamond Tables.

We are putting the pieces together but will have several divisions.
Amateur, Pro, and Women.

With close to 7,000 players, we should have a good turnout. The location is right next to the flow charts in the front (Grande) Ballroom.

We are not very good at solicitng donations - but would appreciate any items that any cue makers or others could see proper to donate. We can raffle them off to help generate more funds to go to the winners.

We are planning on having 4 tries for $20.
We may not have a tournament at the end because of the length of the event. We will try to have an event that ends around the singles events and another that ends around the teams events.

Questions and suggestions are welcome.

As far as an ending tournament. One of the reasons for NOT having that kind of finale is that our event lasts 11 days. Many of the players will try this challenge during the single events but just are not here during the team events. Likewise, many of the team players and pros are not here at the beginning.

I don't think it is fair to MAKE a person be available for the finals which might be a week later. We could have a tournament at the end of the singles and at the end of the team but with 2 tables, a tournament might take a fair amount of time. BUT we are open to suggestions, but they must be practical.

We will also have more divisions; amateurs, women, pro etc. And can have several different events. One geared around the single players and one geared around players playing in the team events.

Since our event lasts so long, we cannot have the event going until 3 AM. The staff just cannot work those kind of hours.

Mark - closing an 11 day event with a tournament based on the standings would be quite difficult since some qualifiers may no longer be at the site, or in the state, for that matter. But with such a long event you may consider having 2 consecutive Straight Pool Challenges - the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th can be qualifying days with the tournament on Monday the 16th. Then the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th can be qualifying days for the second one with the tournament on the 21st.

Do you have volunteers to work this booth for that many days?? Ask Charlie, Steve and Heather - it gets boring and tiring after so many days.

Thanks for the comments. That is along the original lines we were thinking - IF we have a tournament at the end.

It is very difficult to do scheduling on the tournament when all the players are either leaving or playing in other events.

We will work it out in the fairest way we can.

We do not have many volunteers lined up yet but are working on it. It will be a challenge to make it work right but I think we can do it.
