The last year the big tables were used for tournament play (Straight Pool Championship) was 1949. The tournament was won by Caras and Jimmy will always be remembered as the last champion on the 5 x 10.
Correct me if I'm wrong Jay, but 5 x 10's weren't popular in the south. And once the tournaments went the way of the 4.5 x 9's it opened THE championship up to more southern shooters - enter Wimpy Lassiter.

The most popular table in the South and Midwest was the oversized eight footer (46" x 92"). Mosconi won many of his titles in the 50's on nine foot tables. Some of his "World Championships" consisted of a long challenge match against one player. He didn't have to beat a field of strong players to claim the world title. Ursitti will vouch for that I'm sure.
