I returned to playing pool after a long layoff.Bought a really nice Schon custom cue weighted for me and love the feel.I started to get into the local 9ball tournements and I never really got into it.So last week I went to the pool hall and decided to play the game I grew-up with 14.1. I was amazed how relaxed I was and how my thinking of playing thru the rack came back to me. I spent 2 hours practicing until I noticed that I was consistly running 25-30 balls before making a stupid mistake or was I just excited? The feel at being at the table and having all the balls in front of me making the shots and positioning my cue ball were I wanted it to go for MY decision for the next shot gave me not only confidence but a sense of accomplishment. Remembering to chose the keyball to get on the breakball was so satisfying. After the practice session I finally made a commitment to never go back to 9 ball and to continue to get my straight pool skills back. No more jump cues or break cues. Just me,my cue and my skill to see how far I can go. I think I will by a set of balls I know it will make a big difference and enhance the experience. Which ones do I buy? Suggestions

That's great, and 14.1 is the greatest pool game in the world (running a close second is 1pkt :) )

14.1 allows you to get into that zone and enjoy it for a much longer time. It's the game I love to play also. Happy shooting!

Rocky ~ welcome back to the sane world of straight pool. We've missed you! And good luck with the new Schon.

Please be aware that there is a sticky thread for posting your high run for 2011. If you post your high run since January 1 it will be added to the running list on the first page. If you beat it later in the year - post your new number - the list gets updated regularly.

As far as balls, my choice has always been Brunswick Centennials, but Steve and Dennis are telling me that the Aramith Tournament balls are just as good or better! Don't scrimp on balls if you don't have to. You'll have them for a very long time and good balls will pay dividends over and over and over...

Welcome to the forum and shoot em straight!

Your story sounds like mine, even the Schön cue. I will give another vote for the Brunswick Centennials.

Hey Rocky, I know exactly on how you feel and congrats on your run(s). I used to be totally in love with 9 ball, till my eyes were opened to 14.1. Now I can't get enough. 9ball doesnt give me that high that straight pool does (unless I'm running rack after rack). As for my personal goals, I'd like to be a great all around player and straight pool is a way to get started on that, and recently have been starting to get into 1pocket as well. Keep it up and let's keep those high runs comming.

14.1

Great comments here. 14.1 is the Best with out a doubt.
As for pool balls. I have had Centennials all my Life, they look great & play great. I also have a new set of the Aramith Tournament balls which are a kind of copycat of the Centennials. They play the same and look good.
After a month of having them, I have decided that I miss my Centennials too much. I just like the looks of them.

I have some Aramith Super Pro that I use at home. (sometimes a ball will bounce out of the ball return and then start bouncing on the concrete floor, so they have some scratches)

I have a few other sets I have never used at home for obvious reasons. I take them with me to the pool halls and use them.

I had been using my Centennials for a few years, but I got a new set of the Aramith Tournament balls and like them better.

pictures in order: Tournament, Super Pro, Brunswick Centennials.

Dennis,

Just curious, what exactly do you like better about the Tournament balls vs. the Centennials? Is it just the looks, or do you feel they actually play better?

Russ

I can't say that they play better, but they do play better than the miss matched sets at the pool halls. I find that the racks do open up alot better with these though. Especially when racking with a delta 13 !!!

From what I know the tourney set is still cheaper in price than the centenials ! Especially at the deal that I got them for ! :-)

The looks mean nothing to me. They claim that they are made from a different material:

"With the Duramith™ Technology, the Aramith resins
entered their 4th generation. With a totally overhauled
resin formulation with new hi-tech reticulation, crosslinking and curing technologies, the Aramith products now
set a new benchmark in quality, durability & longevity,
increasing their service life up to 50% during which :
& their through-hardened vitried surface and core holds
their glossy look
& their specications, rebound and playing consistency
throughout the set is maintained all along
& the cloth wear and white marks that so easily ruin the
look of the table are minimized
& their friction resistance minimizes burn spots as well"

They seem to stay shinier longer and they seem to break up well. It is obviously hard to compare since no two breaks are the same, but it seems
so to me.
