Commentary on the streams

In my opinion, the commentators should not be talking loud enough for the players of a match to hear their conversations. It would be a distraction to me if I were playing. But, besides that, suggesting what a player might do, or could do, or shouldn't do, may help that player see something he didn't notice.
Any feelings or opinions on this matter?

I would like to say that I love good commentary, and would especially like to hear Billy Incardona's opinion, but outcomes of games can be altered by commentary, in my opinion.

its not always that easy to talk loud enough for the viewers to hear you and quiet enough for players to not hear you.

sometimes there is only one place to set up and if you have to fly to the streaming location there is no way to take a plexiglass shield with you

i agree with you,i think they should just call the play by play, and dont sit there and say he should do this or do that, because obvious the guys playing know more about the game then the commentators, unless the commentators or incardona, frost, grady, hall well yon know what i mean!

You know on 2nd thought it is hard sitting there an watching a game without, saying he should do this or that,i catch myself doing it all the time, while iam at my poolroom betting on the side, you question is a tough call!

The venues could help by having some music playing so that every little sound and conversation isn't a distraction.

If I was playing on the stream table, I sure wouldn't want to be hearing the commentary as I was shooting. I especially wouldn't want to hear, "he dogged that one" after a miss.:D

I usually turn the sound off due to the annoying "breathing into the mike".
"Second Guessing" a Player's shot is also annoying.

i think that any commentator[i have heard or seen] will be aware that he may be heard and would try to do his job with no impact on the players match ,if at all possible. many times you will hear them say they wish they had a better vantage point so they will not be heard, if they do speak too loudly.it is tough enough to commentate intelligently and not have voids in the conversation without worrying if the players can, or think they can hear them. kudo's to all that have tried and have done it. i would find it very interesting to do and would embrace the challenge. :clapping:nothing like actually being a part of excellence!

P.S. there seems to be a common element, that no matter how someone is doing, someone can always find a flaw. why don't you try MUTE, then commentate yourself?.................................................................. how does it sound now?

Quiet please!

Not a lot of rocket science here guys. BOOTH!! You need a booth. Not much more than a deer blind with nice windows.

It would be nice if the streaming locations could provide some plexiglass that would cover the booth for that purpose. A little cloth is needed as well to muffle th sound.

However, I'm of the opinion that American pocket billiards needs more excitement in the booth. I guess that means a little more noise, not less. lol The players should be made aware of that if that is the direction the livestream takes it and let them roll with the punches.

I agree with the breathing into the mike. Just back off a bit, very annoying.
And there is one person that I have noticed on a couple of different streams. I have no idea who it is. Every time a player makes a nice play, the only thing they say is "WOW".

It wouldn't be all that bad except that it is in the absolute most monotone drone voice you could ever imagine. By drone and monotone, I mean it sounds like they have a sinus block or they are pinching their nose closed.
Sometimes it is one Wow after another. Wow, wow wow.

If you want to hear what this sounds like exactly, pinch your nose with your fingers and say, WOW.

All I have to say is, WOW!

I don't think the commentators whoever you are referring to, can hear their own breathing into the microphone. I guess that's why the higher end production companies have "production managers" managing that and the "wows". Good points nevertheless....

Hey hog.if u r talking about lennys last 1pocket stream, that guys name is kentucky,he nos his stuff, but he is annoying!

Rich, I did notice the person on Lenny's stream say it a couple of times the other night.
The one I was thinking about was a stream many months ago. It wasn't Lenny's. And then, it was a girl that was doing it. The funny part about that
one was, thats all she said, no other commentary whatsoever. It didn't matter if the player made a ball or missed, it was still a WOW.

Joey, I don't know if they use hand held mikes or on a stand. All it takes is just to lower the mike below your chin a bit. Speaking over top and not directly into it. If they use head sets, I guess its hard to not breath into them.

Sounds like a portable plexiglass booth and headsets is the solution here. How feasible is it to mix in the audio stream remotely?

Gawd bless 'em, every one...for they are volunteer unpaid labor. It is a shame if commentators disturb the players, though.

But geeze...every bar where pool is played is chock full of noises worse than two sober people talking.

Hand held mikes are NOT the way to go FOR SURE.

What is needed is a quality mike that once set, does not easily mutate to a different shape. I saw a comedian on HBO a few nights ago and the guy was moving and shaking his head like a mongoose and his mike stayed perfect on his head the whole time and of course the audio was perfect. While I haven't done much commentary lately except some guest appearances on the BigTruck show, I have often thought about purchasing my own headset just for that reason. Different people using the same headset, bending the device multiple times. .... et cetera; the equipment can get a little worn with usage as well.

If you think I was annoying on the stream, I'm worse in person. LOL LOL Your name sounds familiar Richie, where do I know you? I was deliberately trying to be a drone because I feel it is unfair to show partisanship. Richie didn't appreciate some of my announcing because I would talk about the available shots. The heavy breathing was because of the equipment. Lenny will tell you himself that what he bought with him wasn't the best and there was no plexiglass to be had. We were very close to the players and had to talk directly, softly into the mic. Hey, I did the best I could and people that know me, sent me plenty of PMs on the broadcasting. I rarely play the "wrong" shot but due to injury, my game has gone into the tank. If you listened to the Rafeal, Silva, match, it was plenty exciting and I know I wasn't always a drone during that match. Hey, you guys got to watch great one pocket for FREE and you're whining. Send me Five bucks for working two days. Lenny and I did that for free. We both have Pay Pal accounts. BTW They named a STATE after me because of my abilities.
