I was visiting my uncles match which i do from time to time. I actually introduced him to the apa and now I don't play in it and he has for 5 straight years lol. I stopped playing because our team is really not a sociable team nor do they stick around to watch all of us play. They usually go play tournament pool on the other side of the pool hall. So I decided to just shoot some tourneys and shoot pool at home. Any way my uncle was on the 8 ball while the opponent had to shoot a defensive shot and so his captain calls time out and on purpose talks loudly and in a sarcastic manner and says look all you have to do is hit it hear because his game will only allow him to do this so he will try and do this and it will end up here blah blah blah. So what he did was tell his guy to stop the cue ball at a point where my uncle had to kick 3 rails to get close to and yes its obvious my uncle is only a 4 and is only guessing at the 3 rail kick. Can you do that in the apa or can my uncle's team call out a rule that says against that? It's more of a gamesmanship thing. I mean what a character.

In an official time-out/coach, he can be instructed on what and how to shoot. If they have not taken a time-out, the player cannot be instructed.
A player can talk with his teammates about what could likely happen and what to do, while his opponent is at the table, but when the cue ball stops moving and it is his turn to shoot, he is not supposed to be receiving help from his team.
As for talking loudly and obnoxiously, well.... sadly there is no rule against being a jerk.
Instead of "what a character" , I think you may have been commenting on his LACK of character . Except for his tone , however , he seems to have stayed within the established rules .

at least from some of the descriptions I read here. Fortunately I haven't witnessed much in my division that would require institution of that rule. But nothing surprises me much any more.
Why didn't you get on another team....??? Be sociable yourself....
No matter where you play, there are always going to assholes..... just make sure that you are not one of them and savor that self satisfaction.
If you lose a lot..... don't get angry..... get better..

I usually suggest to the players on my team that they ask such a rule question to the opposing teams captain first, so there is no suggestion of trying to sneak in any coaching. Then once the question "is out there", it can be discussed with our team as well.

Because I play league tennis , I have my own company designing tennis clothes and this keeps me extremely busy. So I made a big commitment playing on that team only because I was trying to get my uncle off of his computer and out in the real world. I had to play 1 year of pool at the pool hall just to get him comfortable to join the league (I had a great time playing him that 1 year with 8 ball race to 10, He went from a 2 to a five playing me that year !) He is extremely shy and his game he did not think was good enough for the apa because he only new it was a league and did not know it was just your average player league. I have no problem making friends , like an old pool junkie used to say, "Every where I go they all ways want me back , you know why ? Because I'm 100 percent pure"
I used to play pool for dinner every night going from bar to bar in san fran when I was in my early 20's. Which means I am extremely aware of characters and know how to handle any variation of them (like water pouring down my back . As far as getting better, I have peaked to a point where I really don't need to get better unless I took up pool for a living which I have no intentions of doing. I do practice on my home table when I play tourneys once in awhile. Stuff like banks , kicks. But with my game now I feel comfortable I can compete with anyone in various games. Anyway my original post was not about me. Why so curious about me? It was cute though and made me smile ...

See your a good captain, My uncles team/ my former team do not suggest anything. They are to busy running over to the tournament to see whats going on. I mean your making a commitment to other people when you sign up for a team. That's not right at all.

Usually during a time out you don't want the opponent to hear your strategy. It may have been a shark ploy or he may have been ticked that his player wanted a time out for a very obvious safety play.
After that happened did you uncle ask for a timeout?

My uncle did not ask for a time out because only the score keeper was in the presence but she was not even paying attention. She was tired. Everyone else where at the other side of the pool hall finding out when they are up next for the tourney. There is positives about a team that is casual about apa. Everyone on my uncles team is very laid back. But at the same time situations often come up where you need the support and it isn't their. Or you need to be backed up because their is 6 people on the opposite team saying they seen other wise. So it's you against the whole team lol.. I prefer a more casual team but sometimes it's nice to have people totally committed to a team. You know the ones that march together in to the pool room with all matching shirts and have some chant before they start hahaha

It's not technically against the rules to be a jackass, no, but you can be written up for being verbally abusive towards or about another player. If this coach/captain consistently does that, he should be consistently written up for the breach of etiquette. The league office should warn him not to be a jackass, and if he continues being a jackass (and reported as such), they can suspend him.
So, yeah, he's allowed to tell his player that the other player "can't" do something, but he can't phrase it that way. "Leave it here and it's a really hard shot" is the way to phrase it, rather than "he's not going to be able to make this shot." You talk about the shot and not the player making it.
Most leagues will have local bylaws that more specifically state what you can or can't say about your opponent.

Two things to point out here.
First and foremost, if your Uncle needs a time-out/coach and the other players are still in the room, he just needs to call time-out, scoot over there and grab someone. Or the scorekeeper could have gone and grabbed someone. So long as it only takes a moment or two, that's no big deal. You can't always plan on when the person who does the coaching might be in the bathroom or at the bar or whatever....
Secondly, what's up with this tournament at the same time as league? Someone needs to hang around the match that is in progress, beyond the scorekeeper (unless the person keeping score is capable of coaching) to help out the newer players. Much of our coaching is done when our players aren't at the table, but sitting watching their opponent. Example.... " if he leaves you long, this would be a good time to break out that cluster" or "if you get ball in hand here, you should probably try to get the 7 out of trouble first..." or whatever is appropriate. That helps them learn the game, and learn what to look for on their own. I am still a beginner ability-wise, and I learn a lot from talking about the game with the other players. This is very important for new players, trying to learn the game.

Your secondly is the answer to your firstly lol. The tournament is everyday for one. The pool Hall is huge , It is the biggest pool hall in southern California. It hosts all of the counties Apa teams !! The pool hall has its own apa area with banners and lots of tables far from the many many 9 foot tables. What that means is you just can't call time out and run over to your team mates. Because you have huge numbers of players all around you . And at the tournament side you have even more because this place is become insanely popular because it's owned by Efren Reyes child hood friend and Efren has been going their allot. So again you just can't run over their. I will make a video of the place on that night and you will see lol. Like I said the team is not committed to the team. They are more worried about the tourney.
