Kennedy once said “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country” and when I was in the US Navy I saw posters all over the bases that had that famous quote and I will probably die remembering that quote. That quote is detrimental to this great Nation. We must have volunteers to rise to each occasion, take charge and do something. But the people, who do step up, take charge and bring change need to be credible people with honesty and integrity. Pool and billiards needs someone or an organization to step up and take charge and I think we have found this in the ABP. Players taking charge of their destiny and moving things to a positive light no matter what one’s personal feelings are about the ABP – everyone must concede they are trying to take control of their own future.

For too long players have not taken control of this game and it has had promoters come and go, make big promises and leave town and who get gets affected? The players.

Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address said “…that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Lincoln 1863. Now the ABP is setting a standard for pool in America that shall be adhered to, honored, and accepted. Players, promoters, and sponsors should be happy that someone is attempting to take a strong hold on pool. Grab pool by the horns and move it to the right direction; the direction where it will never again perish.

Too many promoters, sponsors and other people involved in the sport have put their money on the table with high hopes for pool. Yet who controlled the professional sport? No body and for many years any old person could start a tour and hold a tournament with zero standards. We need standards, weights and measures just like the rest of the world.

Pool in America can only be what we the players make of it, either it will be grand, or it will continue in the manner which it has for the last 10 years. Low pay outs; high costs and few players making a living. Pool should have players representing the game like Shaun Wilkie of Maryland. Who in my opinion is one of the most stand up guys in the game today, a player who has honesty, integrity, and a love for this game. Players like Shaun and other ABP Board Members are all the sport has left in America, and they should be commended by what they are attempting to accomplish with the sport of pool. But make no mistake they will obtain what they demand, this is not some overnight orginization, they have for the past few years been trying to make these demands. And their attempts as evident in their press releases have been ignored by the US Open Promoter.

All too often promoters make huge promises to get players in the door and time and time again they fail to keep their promise to the sport of pool. Why is it that America’s number one played game has no money? Because no organization has had the courage to step up and take hold of Pool. All too often players asked what pool can do for them, not what they could do for pool. Well today that is changing and the ABP with players and board members are taking a strong hold on pool and hopefully this will change pool.

For one Inside Pool Magazine, saw a need for the product JR Stepped up, took control and got it to the great organization it is today. Back in the 90’s the Men’s Professional Body said they didn’t want to hold an Expo anymore, so Allen Hopkins stepped up to the plate and grew it to the success it is today. So for the professional game, let’s hope the ABP continues to step up to the plate and take charge of this sport and grow it to where it should be.

Mike Zuglan who owns and operates the Joss Northeast 9 ball tour once told me a story about a player at Turning Stone. This player was a top pro and for many years top 15 in the country; who was walking around complaining about the event, the tables, the crowd and various other things. And Mike said he was upset because had this player been making complaints in front of one of the powers to be at Turning Stone why would they ask the Joss Tour back for another event? If one of the top players in America was out complaining and talking badly about the event – why would they? And yet I say to this player? What have you done for pool? What have you changed in pool? How much of your own money have you put in to bettering this sport? Zero.

Many people speak to me about the Team DMIRO Tour and ask why I stopped running the tour, well frankly it was because there was no money in the tour, I had spent almost $19,000 of my own money to keep things running and it failed to become what we hoped it would have. But I always say to the people with negative comments, I spent $19,000 on this game – What have you spent? Many peopel can bad mouth me, but my intentions for this sport were all good, none negitive. This game needs business people as promoters, and the players as the governing body. The players in every other sport in America have a say in their game, so why not pool?

In conclusion the ABP should be commended for their efforts and standing up for what is right and fair. I have played in the US Open and I will again providing the ABP comes to an agreement with its promoter. But holding this promoter to their standard only sets the bar high and tells promoters in America that they aren’t messing around. And no longer will the players in the United States accept promoters dishonesty and failure to pay players.

Well said. They should be commended, both of sides. I would like to see who is supporting this event and the process by which we are getting the support. Who is paying who and how much of it goes where. As a player, it's only fair to know what's going on.

And you know what else? I'm getting tired of people saying pool players are stupid....well, some of us are smart as bricks, but you don't have to tell us that! J/k. Standards are awesome. We need more goodness. =)

Why is it always the players that must grow pool?

The growth of pool must be a team effort. The team being made up players, room owners, those in the billiard industry, instructors, and rec programs in the local cities.

The function of this team is to market pool, establish standards for promoters and players, give a set course to get pool into the Olympics. The latter is critical to pool. Pool as a Olympic sport is the most needed thing for pool right now. This is number one on the to do list.

Players must grow the sport because they are the ones affected. Cue makers and big companies already make their money, rooms have leagues and food and drinks and make money. Players only make money by playing in tournaments, that is a gamble.

Buy you are right it is a team effort! However, the players should have a say, and control. Just as any other sport, players have a say in all aspects of the game as it is played.

Boycotting the US Open gave the players the biggest stand possible in American pool. That is one of the longest running tournaments and a title which all players strive to achieve. ABP has made their stand, now it is time to accept it, change, and move forward.

There are other terms used in the military like "Cluster F&%k" and Snafu, I am sure yo know what that means.

Buy you are right it is a team effort! However, the players should have a say, and control. And some responsibility. Just as any other sport, players have a say in all aspects of the game as it is played.

When the players are actively working to grow the sport, that is when they can start dictating terms, imho.

They need to be active participants in promoting the events, be it interviews, pro-ams, clinics, photo ops, whatever. If they pro's start doing that on a regular basis, then they can and should be part of the decision making process. Because they are helping the tournament director make the event successful, which in turn makes it easier for the tournament director to pay them, and to pay them better, and more promptly.

Way to go Mike, I agree whole heartedly with everything you say above. The thing that gets me is all the people taking sides when they have no clue whats gone on. I myself do not know exactly what has gone on behind the scenes with talks between Barry and the ABP, so I cannot comment on that. All I do know conclusively is that the ABP claims of late payments etc are absolutely correct everyone knows that. I also know that Barry needs not to do his own press releases or interviews because any facts are always overshadowed by (and this is being as nice as I can) inaccurate statements, he seems incapable of just sticking to facts!

Pool needs professionals. Those in the spotlight need to be professionals and act as such, whether players, promotors, manufacturers, or room owners.

I also believe that the players need to do more in the line of public relations and media coverage. The players need to be the ones to step up and change the sport. Afterall, without the players, there is no sport. Room owners can only do so much. You could have the nicest poolroom around, but with no players, the room won't last long.

It's all about promoting. Players need to be promoting this game as much as they possibly can. Even casual to league players don't know who many of the top players of today are. That MUST change for pool to ever have a chance to make it big. Take Jeanette Lee for example. There aren't many people in the pool world, or otherwise, who don't know who she is. She does quite well for herself, without even playing in tournaments. The top male pros need to have the same popularity as Jeanette Lee. Even Johnny Archer, with all that he's accomplished in his career, is still not that popular of a name. Of course the 10,000-15,000 or so pool enthusiasts across the nation know the name well, but I'd be willing to bet that the majority of the foundation of pool, the league players, bar flies, and bangers across the nation, have no idea who he is.

You want pool to be an Olympic sport? Then you need the players to be superstars.
 
I hear you. Maybe NFL or NFC can adopt 9 ball or 8 ball team(s) in each State and have a US players super nine ball one day, wouldn't that be nice. Seriously!
 
how in the hell do you think that pro players boycotting the event helps the growth of pool, these are pros that want every advantage they can get by forcing promoters to seed them in events,well the last i checked there were alot more players that are nonpros that make up the pool world,i know a few amateurs that alot of socalled pros don't want to play.it still just seems to me that they are worried more about the money than pool sport itself,i for one hope that none of these players show up for THE SHOW WILL GO ON.......:thumbup:

How much of your own money have you put in to bettering this sport? Zero.

Many people speak to me about the Team DMIRO Tour and ask why I stopped running the tour, well frankly it was because there was no money in the tour, I had spent almost $19,000 of my own money to keep things running and it failed to become what we hoped it would have. But I always say to the people with negative comments, I spent $19,000 on this game – What have you spent? Many peopel can bad mouth me, but my intentions for this sport were all good, none negitive. This game needs business people as promoters, and the players as the governing body. The players in every other sport in America have a say in their game, so why not pool?

In conclusion the ABP should be commended for their efforts and standing up for what is right and fair. I have played in the US Open and I will again providing the ABP comes to an agreement with its promoter. But holding this promoter to their standard only sets the bar high and tells promoters in America that they aren’t messing around. And no longer will the players in the United States accept promoters dishonesty and failure to pay players.

Way to go Mike, I agree whole heartedly with everything you say above. The thing that gets me is all the people taking sides when they have no clue whats gone on. I myself do not know exactly what has gone on behind the scenes with talks between Barry and the ABP, so I cannot comment on that. All I do know conclusively is that the ABP claims of late payments etc are absolutely correct everyone knows that. I also know that Barry needs not to do his own press releases or interviews because any facts are always overshadowed by (and this is being as nice as I can) inaccurate statements, he seems incapable of just sticking to facts!

You might want to read that newest press release a little more carefully. If you do you will see the obvious inconsistencies in the statements contained there. Of course that's assuming you want to be unbiased in what you read.

Wonder what genius wrote this dribble? There are many people who have been sticking up for, and supporting, the players for years. To say that NOBODY has been in their corner is a complete falsehood. More of the "victim" mentality here. The more they talk (whoever they are) the less tenable their position becomes.
 
Just curious how you KNOW that Barry's statements are in fact not factual. It wouldn't be just because the side you are on said so, could it??

But, let's just assume that the only facts most of us actually know are 1. Barry has been late on payments, but always paid. 2. Barry goes WAY out of his way for the players. 3. The ABP has decided to boycott the U.S. Open.

Now, with just those facts, what else do we know? 1. Whether the pros boycott or not, there will be another U.S. Open. 2. Someone else, whom you quoted, wants to relate to history. O.K., let's look at history then. The route the pros are taking is the stupidest route they could take. History shows that it has never worked, and won't work. 3. The ABP has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are in it for themselves, and couldn't care less about the sport (or game for you sensitive types) overall.
Well Barry stated last year publicly that he was going to cart out the cash on a silver platter, and yet that didn't happen did it. Before the Open last year durring the players meeting he promised everyone whould be paid before we left the building, yet did any of that happen? No. Barry has made bold statments and never kept his word when it comes to the payouts. So the ABP is focing him to or they don't show.

Look Accu-stats just signed a contract to get this event on TV, well... Now that the big players aren't going to show, I gurantee that contract won't be extended.

Jay, I have respected most of your positions and your comments and such that you have had here and elewhere. However, you are speaking badly about the players trying to stick up for what is right? Am I getting this right? You don't apprecaite the fact that the ABP is trying to stick up for what they feel is only fair?

Ok Jay, go to a dealership next time you need a car, give them a down payment, purachse the insurance, and then have the guy walk out and tell you, you can't drive your new car you paid for. Let's say you can't drive your new car for 5-6 months and see how you feel about it.

If I pay an entry fee I deserve to get paid as soon as I am done with the tournament, its only FAIR.

I guess you don't stand for things being FAIR.

I think in this instance of what's currently happening, well, this is pool politics. Everybody has their own views, just like the Republicans, Democrats, Tea Party, and Independents.

Who's to say who is right or who is wrong when it comes to politics! ;)

Players love pool and the fact they are willing to past up a huge event should be evident that they aren't getting enough support.
