if Pool is a sport, then define "sport'

Baseball has a ball, football has a ball, basketball, hockey has a puck[flat ball], soccer has a ball. these are all considered the top professional sports. what do you think?

In my opinion pool is a sport because it requires physical skill. Games, such as chess and poker, require only intellect.

A game is a game, played by one or many.football is a game using teams, many participants to play a game.a round of golf is a round of golf, can be turned into a game, same with pool.hunting and fishing are activities that can be a necessity.anything can be turned into a competition.their no such thing as a football or pool sport.somehow the term sports became the dominant definition of many different events.the term sport or sportsman is reserved for the person that will participate in the event.when a person answers the challenge to play a game, that person is a sport.

Hmmm

A sport is any type of competive game that requires physical skills (endurance, strength, speed,) and/or eye-hand coordination.

Poker (or any card games), any board games, chess, etc are games.

Pool, bowling, shooting (not hunting) ping pong are indeed sports. Do you need the same physical skills to play baseball, football, basketball or tennis,,, of course not. But you do need some very good eye/ hand coordination, and some very good touch.

Just remember just because you play a sport does not necessarily make you an athlete. I mean, are lousy softball players athlests... you know that type of guy that stick at catcher or hide in right field and bats last in every game..... He is playing a sport, but just not quite athletic....

I don't even think this is a real question...... It's quite obvious pool is a sport. The real question is WHY do some folks call "poker" a sport. That is just plain ridiculous IMHO....

This subject has been hashed over a zillion times. Pool is not an athletic sport. It is a game. It may or may not be a non-athletic sport. It's only semantics anyway, so who really cares. Call it what you want. The rules and the challenges remain the same.

The fact that physical excecution is so important in pool would definitely make it a sport. In chess, for example, i'd agree with you as I find it hard to believe a man would have trouble lifting his arm to move a chess piece.

The fact that there are seemingly unfit great players in the game of pool simply tells you the movements required to perform well aren't so much based in physical strength, but coordination and ability. Yet, having said all that, I do feel, all other things being equal, fit players such as we see from Europe have big advantages, especially in longer matches. I think the fact that the vast majority of people seem to have a picture in their head of what an athlete should look like is simply just unjustified stereotyping caused by cultural biases.

I actually agree with you though, it is semantics.

If you think pool is a sport you're only fooling yourself.

If you don't run and jump, it's not a sport. Sorry pool. Sorry golf. Sorry beer pong. Sorry horseshoes.

Obviously you haven't seen certain players and their bodily contortions during play.

Pool is an activity that demands a high degree of physical skill.
It requires a high level of concentration.
It requires a high level of stamina.
It requires a high degree of mental toughness.
It is competitive.
Participants sweat while engaging in it.

And

The best in the world both run and jump while playing. :-)

It's a sport.

So NASCAR, MotoGP, F1 Racing, Archery, Marksmanship, the Luge, and Sailing. All not sports. Technically by your definition swimming isn't a sport either but I'll let that go and assume kicking under water is like running.

Anyone who has seen me run after losing a couple of cheap sets would know that pool is a sport.

Yep - and Buddy Hall is one of the best "athletes" out there - Pool/Billiards is a game.

Someone is jealous. Don't hate, congratulate!

Pool is a game and a sport, just like the other game/sports. It just does not require much in terms of cardio and speed of the whole body (it does require a speedy stroke sometimes), but fine motor coordination, physical skill, mental toughness... it does. And it is all based around an accurate throwing motion that requires the precise placement and balance of the body. Some people who can't do it call it only a game...

Most seasoned pool players know that acquiring the mechanical skills to play pool proficiently is the easy part. What separates the lions from the lambs is the mental strength it takes to execute your arsenal of shots under pressure.

After you acquire the mechanical skills in pool, the rest is learning how to control your mind. There's something to be said about the power of positive thinking.

Most great pool legends have self-confidence and egos to match. A minute few just chalk it up and say, "I got lucky," but we all know that's not true!
