Over the last couple of streams I have watched there has been a lousy new development.

Forgive me if this has already been brought up but:

Used to be that you had to endure a 30 second commercial when you signed on. Slightly inconvenient but not too bad.

Now, the new trend is that in addition to the initial 30 second commercial, they are adding in 15 second commercials right in the middle of the matches. This is a real nuissance.

Is there anything that can be done about this?

And while we're at it, can anything be done about the popups that tend to block the bottom corner pockets?

Starting to feel like a video game where I have to keep destroying the invaders. :rolleyes:

Any comments and/or suggestions are appreciated.

Firefox with the AdBlockPlus adon and you will not see any more ads. Be sure to subscribe to a filter.

The reply below about using Firefox seems to be the answer from the viewer perspective. From UStream's perspective they need to monetize the bandwidth and hosting costs they endure. I liken free streams to free television. Free or super low cost television as in basic cable has to be ad supported. So I put up with it as a trade off against paying the content creator directly.

Streaming is still evolving and it is certain that new models will be tried that balance user experience with hosting provider's needs. I am just grateful that we have it at all. The amount of high quality pool available for viewing for free is astounding.

Agree , the free stuff is astounding . Things not available to anybody 20 yrs ago.

This is the way to go. Especially helpful if you're browsing a bunch of ustream archive videos that are poorly labelled. It sucks to wait 30 seconds at the start of every video only to find out it's not the one you're looking for. :angry:

Also, you might get annoying error message windows whenever AdBlock blocks an inline video ad. You can hide those also by placing the string below in c:\users\YourUserNameHere\mm.cfg. Replacing "YourUserNameHere" with your Windows username of course!

SuppressDebuggerExceptionDialogs=1

Also, another good streaming site is Justin.tv which just shows the 30 second add prior to watching the stream. Oh, sorry, thought you were looking for a different stream site to actually stream on, I have never seen pool streamed on justin.tv,,,mainly video games and movies. Sorry to anyone that was looking for pool matches on it. ooops.

I suspect that the commercials during the match that are being talked about are the commercials that the streamers themselves are adding in between racks.

While they can be annoying, these guys need to be able to monetize their work somehow. If they can get a sponsor who is willing to throw them some cash in exchange for us having to watch an ad instead of someone screw with the rack for 30 seconds, I am ok with it.

I think the viewers should have 1 of the following options on all streaming sites:

1. Watch a free stream with commercials included periodically.

or

2. Pay for the stream and watch a commercial-free stream.

But at least now we are at such a stage that pool is at least being streamed... so its not too annoying coz one way or the other, people streaming have to get some revenue.

No, they are random commercials from Ustream that if you dont use firefox they come up every 10 minutes or so,,,usually show up during crucial times of a game,,lol.

I dont think anyone will complain about a sponsors commercial in between games, thats expected and supported.

Ustream does have the option to buy a Premium membership that removes all commercials...its 3.99 a month.

I use FF and still had this problem but BigTruck clued me in to adblock plus and it was OK after that. But I've recently had a different problem. The last couple of ustreams I've tried to watch I got nothing - just a blank white area where the screen is supposed to be. Refreshing several times hasn't helped. Anyone know a fix for this?

Sorry man, I cant help you out with this because I have the same issues sometimes. I usually get it resolved after refreshing several times, seems like the page only uploads halfway and then finally it will upload in its entirity . I dont think its a problem with my comp, but is a problem with ustream itself because sometimes its the chat room not loading and sometimes its the video feed not loading.

It is agrevating to say the least...

turn adblock off for that page. start the show and then turn it back on.

update your adblock from time to time and keep you cache cleaned out with cCleaner.
