Disturbing development on UStream

The reply below about using Firefox seems to be the answer from the viewer perspective. From UStream's perspective they need to monetize the bandwidth and hosting costs they endure. I liken free streams to free television. Free or super low cost television as in basic cable has to be ad supported. So I put up with it as a trade off against paying the content creator directly.

Streaming is still evolving and it is certain that new models will be tried that balance user experience with hosting provider's needs. I am just grateful that we have it at all. The amount of high quality pool available for viewing for free is astounding.

True but they could do something smart like: somehow put the ad at the top or at the bottom off the viewing area. They'll get a hell of a lot more eye contact that way. With the current set up does anyone not instantly extinguish the ad? If it wasn't interfering with what someone wanted to watch it could be left on longer and have an exponentially greater chance of being viewed.

Firefox with the AdBlockPlus adon and you will not see any more ads. Be sure to subscribe to a filter.

Bingo! This is all you need to never see an ad on ustream or any other streaming service.

All they need to do now is get this fully running on Chrome (won't happen) and I'll be set.

Most of the free streaming providers are moving in this direction, including Justin.tv. Thankfully bandwidth costs are set to drop over the next few years, which means that with a little technical creativity, the more high end streamers can start to set up dedicated private streaming servers.

I'm working on this as we speak for upcoming Runout Media live productions. Although costly, it allows for some neat features, such as higher resolution, better picture quality, and billiard specific advertising.

I use FF and still had this problem but BigTruck clued me in to adblock plus and it was OK after that. But I've recently had a different problem. The last couple of ustreams I've tried to watch I got nothing - just a blank white area where the screen is supposed to be. Refreshing several times hasn't helped. Anyone know a fix for this?

Buy a box of Kamui chalk and then pretend you see a pool match.

I'm right there with you.

Touch base some time. I have found a nice interim solution.

You have the answer on pop-ups but can anything be done about the ustream window size? When they went to the new format the chat and stream got to big. Now I have a scroll bar up and down and without going into detail it sucks!

You can always try this:

'ctrl'+'-' lets you zoom out (this is what you would want to make the viewer smaller)

'ctlr'+'+' lets you zoom in

'ctrl'+'0' returns the page to normal

I don't mind watching the 30 second ads. Someone has to make some money. The ones that get me are the little banners at the bottom of the screen. They always pop up before the most important shot of the game.
And then you're scrambling to hit the X.

I use FF and thought I had Ad Block, apparently not so thanks for the heads up.

Livestream is superior to Ustream.

If the recent tournament in Nicaragua is an indication of Livestream's performance then I am not impressed. The stream was horrible from my side. While at the same time I was able to access streams at JustinTV and Ustream just fine. I often test one against the other when a stream doesn't work well for me so I can determine if the issue is on my side or the provider's side. In this case I am convinced that the provider, Livestream or the uploader, was the main problem. And I do understand that some viewers had a flawless experience which is why I try to test against other streaming sites before complaining.

I mind only because they are always the same and mostly not creative.

Thanks but hitting the Ctrl and using the mouse scroll wheel does the same thing. That does not work it is a fixed page size. On one stream (not ustream) Cali Red said to change the window size in the address bar. Like if it was 240 x 320 change it to 640 X 480. It worked on that stream but I don't think can be done ustream. Does anyone else have the scroll bars on ustream? Surely it can not be just me.

The Livestream from Nicaragua worked fine for me.

cons: The video quality wasn't as good as TAR but it was good.

pros: 1. No ads that annoyed me. I don't remember there being any.
2. No commentators. Just popouts showing the score ACCURATELY.

Oops.

Watch from a iPhone or iPad. No pop ups! But obviously the cheesy commercials will still be there....

Why is all pool products advertising so cheap and cheesy? Especially on espn. So cheap!

What resolution are you running your monitor at? To find out,
1) right click anywhere on your windows desktop
2) select <Properties>
3) Click on the <Settings> tab
4) In the lower left middle, you should see a <Screen Resolution> section
5) Move the slider further to the right to increase the display resolution

Note this will make EVERYTHING smaller..... but it will give you more overall screen space.....

At work, I'm running 1680 x1050

Sorry man, I cant help you out with this because I have the same issues sometimes. I usually get it resolved after refreshing several times, seems like the page only uploads halfway and then finally it will upload in its entirity . I dont think its a problem with my comp, but is a problem with ustream itself because sometimes its the chat room not loading and sometimes its the video feed not loading.

It is agrevating to say the least...

Well, I played around on ustream for a while and maybe figured out what the problem was. What fixed it was that I logged on to ustream first - then no problem, the screen came on. I wonder if this is something new, where you are required to register and log in to be able to watch content. I don't recall having to do that before. Anyway, problem solved - at least for now.

Thanks, I've done that with smaller monitors but unfortunately this one is maxed at 1920 X 1080. It is an HD1080P monitor. It used to be just fine before Ustream went to the new format. Hell even the chat runs backwards. By that I mean it scrolls from top down instead of bottom to top. Always improving eh?
I think I'll check again to see if the window size is shown in the address but its doubtful. You know the part that bothers me that happens with many company's? They have a very good product but they decide to make it better. In the process they f#*k it up! It happens in pool as well, I found a tip that was near perfect. The MFG decided to change the mixture, WTF I would not put the new style on a cue from Kmart! End of rant. LOL
