Why was the "HAMB aiming" thread taken down?

Firstly, snooker players do not discuss aiming systems - I'll bet not 1% of them have heard of CTE, and I bet less than 10% have even heard of CB deflection, let alone know what it is. You must remember that, relatively speaking, very few players read the internet, where these ideas foment. Steve Davis and the like allude to aiming in any way that'll make them money, and besides, these are aimed at rank beginners only. It is my understanding that the aiming systems we're talking about are for all levels of player, including advanced.

Secondly, where did I tell people they were stupid? I think I advised people to play more and read less. Damn good advice, don't you agree?

As is said snooker players discuss aiming methods. That is a fact. I subscribe to snooker forums as well. Secondly, steve Davis teaches aiming and you have no idea why he teaches it. But he does and people discuss what he teaches.

Lastly telling people to shut up and play more is the equivalent of telling them that they are stupid to waste time discussing these things. Why worry about how other people are spending their time? Perhaps people would like to be playing instead of typing but life doesn't allow that so they stay connected to pool by participating here in what interests them.

I'm gonna agree that the best way to aim, by far, is by instinct, and that is something that can't be taught, only learned.

You do need a basic foundation though, and there are a lot of ways to get that, either through 'ghost ball', point of contact, or whatever. In the end I don't think it matters much which a person uses, so long as in the end they 'get it'. It's a little like running a rack of balls at straight pool. There is always an optimal way to go about doing it, but in the end it doesn't matter if a player uses it or not, provided they do run out.

However, all that said, the bolded part of the post I quoted is about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard on here, and I spend time in NPR, so I've heard some pretty ridiculous stuff.

Tell me, how many snookers pros do you know? How many do you hang around with? How often do you play them?

Some have discovered Twitter recently but the majority don't even use the internet, let alone intimately know the conclusions of years academic research on how two balls interact upon contact. They're too busy playing.

You should bear in mind snooker cues deflect very little and most pros will have started on tiny tables with tiny balls, which don't deflect at all. I have never heard ANYONE I play with mention deflection. I have never heard it on tv commentary. Hardly anyone over here plays American pool, with big balls and high deflecting shafts. Those that do play professionally play with Predators - and I mean ALL of them. I still get top, top players looking at me like I'm a loon when i try to explain deflection to them - they simply don't believe it. I didn't until a mate bought a high deflecting custom, and saw it for myself.

Given a) deflection is an irrelevance in snooker and UK 8 ball, and b) American pool players all play with LD shafts, deflection is a big fat non issue in this country.

Wouldn't know, chief. Still got 7,500 posts to go until I catch up with you. Then we'll see, eh?

Without taking sides... every so often someone executes and delivers such a brutal thread-the-needle in yo face gorgeous volley that you read it and kinda just suck in your breath a bit, just from the beutifullness of it all.

Bravo!

But if the shot was fired at Lou, then off to the bit bin.

Actually some of both.

Let me put it this way. Reading and associated activities like watching great players and using instructional materials are a way to be exposed to new techniques. Time on the table allows you to practice and learn these for incorporation in your game.

Sometimes new things work out, sometimes they don't it depends on the person.

Very glad to hear it.

Tell me, what makes you play better - playing or reading?

It was a clean shot and a nice play on your initial attack and your post count compared to his. He gets high marks in my book for technical skill and delivery, Chief ;-)

Lou Figueroa
guess Scott has never seen "in yo face" used before
you should get out more often
