No Time To Hit A Million Balls?

Most on hear don’t have the time to hit a million balls. If you really want to see if it works (HMAMB), pick a shot you miss more than you should. Now I’m NOT talking about a shot a top pro might make 50% of the time. I’m talking about a shot a top pro makes 80-90 % of the time.

Set up the shot and shoot it 10 times noticing where in the pocket or next to the pocket if you miss you are hitting. After 10 shots adjust one way or the other or change your stance or whatever part of your pre-shot that must be changed to pocket the ball more times than not. If you find it is because you don’t have a straight stroke, work on that before going any further.

When you feel you know how to make the shot as well as you can at this point shoot the shot 100 times a day for 10 days. Most that do this won’t have any more problems making that shot and most shots similar to that shot. If you are only having problems with 3 or 4 types of shots you can raise your pocketing % bigtime in just a few months. I’m too old and lazy to do this anymore but I know it works if you do it and focus on every shot. Johnnyt

great post. This is similar to what i do and it really works. I never really thought about though just did it. :D

learning a shot

steve davis once said during commentary in one of the world pool 9 ball events that if you were to shoot a particular shot 500 times, you would understand the shot. nuff said!

Good post;

And to keep it simple (for all those that overanalize the shot) providing all your fundamentals are intact, as you approach (walk up to the shot) do it a little more left or a little more right depending on your miss, thats ALL you have to do. If your really TALL its even More impt.

It's funny too how people miss certain shots the same way over and over. For example, if you have a 45+ degree cut that must run close to the short rail for 18 inches or so... how many of you overcut that shot vs. undercut it? Personally, when I miss, it was an undercut 95% of the time. And somehow, I've noticed my friends always undercut it too. Now I (we) just aim at the thin side of the pocket, the outer jaw. Amazing how that little aiming trick can improve your make %. It might be that hitting the ball with a slight mental or physical tweak will 'fix' it within ten shots, rather than a thousand.

I think most missed cut shots are undercut. When i'm in stroke I tend to throw the OB more or or hit less of it if too much throw/spin will put me out of position for the next shot. I know hitting the same shot is one of the best ways to deal with missing a shot too often. Many pros told me years ago to do this and I saw that they did it themselves. I believe it was Steve Cook who told me that when you miss a certain shot too often it stays in your mind when the shot comes up again and any negative thoughts when you are down on a shot almost always mean a miss. Repeating making the shot many times gives positive thoughts when shooting it in a game. Johnnyt

I worked with a teammate with a shot like this. What I noticed was if you drew a line straight through the ob and where the ob contacted the rail, most people were aiming at the back center of the pocket. Where most of us have been taught to aim at i.e. straight in shots.

The problem is the rail is in the way on these cut shots. When I had her aim these shots to the outer edge of the pocket she started pocketing these shots consistently. IMO learning how and where to aim should be the first and most important fundamental taught.

stumpie71...IMO you have to learn how to move the cue in a straight line first. People aim accurately and easily...most of them can't hit where they're aiming.

As myself and others have said in their posts above, "if you don't have a straight stroke, work on that first". Johnnyt
