A Humbling Experience

Last night I got a call from a friend who asked me to swing by and shoot a couple of games with him, nothing serious just hang out with a few friends and shoot a couple of games. When I got there they were playing with an older women I've never seen before, so I sat down to watch before I joined.

This woman was handing it to my friend! Hes not a bad shot by any means, but watching her play you could tell that she had been really serious about it at some time or another....... a little rough around the edges, dirty sense of humor, just a genuinely nice lady to shoot with.
The funny thing was my friend is this really really nice guy but you could tell he was just getting more and more frustrated/exasperated by getting a good thrashing. He took it in stride and was a good sport about the whole thing and was very complimentary to her of her playing ability. We all parted ways at the end of the night and had a laugh at our mystery ladies prowess over our friend and headed out to the parking lot.

Talking in the parking lot I noticed a car sitting with its windows cracked and newspaper taped up and I commented to my friend how sad it was that someone was sleeping in the parking lot. He said to me, "oh, you didn't know? That's the woman that was playing with us. She works at Wal-mart and sleeps in her car. When we opened up the tables we saw her out here and asked her if she wanted to come in and play pool." I remember her saying she needed to ask a friend to borrow gas money but I had no idea how hard up she really was.
It's easy sometimes to forget how lucky we are who have a roof over our heads and money to go shoot pool as often as we want. It was a sobering reminder to not take things for granted.

Have a good, fun weekend everybody! I know that even if I'm losing and frustrated it's still a gift to be able to play!

Good story. Imagine the feeling it gave her to be winning in life again. Not to mention it probably took away the worries of the world for her, at least for a little while. You should go find her and ask her for lessons. She gets paid, you get knowledge and you'll both be better off for it.

Something is seriously wrong with our Country when someone who works full time has to live out of their car. Thanks for shaing the story.

I know, I was trying to think of a way to help without making it a handout, which I don't think she would accept.

If you get a chance to see it http://www.walmartmovie.com/...

Walmart represents everything wrong with America these days... I love how the company skirts providing medical insurance and trains employees how to work the local systems to the tune of somewhere around 2billion dollars in medical per year..... They build with tax grants and exemptions and then relocate a few miles as soon as another municipality steps up in rural locations.... They are a leach on the American economy.....

I won't shop there and have to think Sam is rolling over in his grave... I recall when everything they sold would have the made in the USA labels.....

Walmart never sold 'only' made in the usa products. They did have a few special campaigns though. Their practice of using a lot of P/T employess just pushes their health costs to the rest of the society. That's a subsidy for WM. I don't shop there.

According to this Forbe's billionaire list, the Waltons are the 20th,21st, and 22nd richest in the world. Christy Walton, another Walmart heir made it to the top ten the old fashion way, she married into it.

Kindness given in small ways like that never goes unnoticed in the big book of life.

Yeah, we live in a Me world and sometimes its easy to forget that there are others not as fortunate as we are. Its good to have a humbling experience once in a while to give our existence a bit of perspective.

Good for you guys.
