Last night I got a call from a friend who asked me to swing by and shoot a couple of games with him, nothing serious just hang out with a few friends and shoot a couple of games. When I got there they were playing with an older women I've never seen before, so I sat down to watch before I joined.
This woman was handing it to my friend! Hes not a bad shot by any means, but watching her play you could tell that she had been really serious about it at some time or another....... a little rough around the edges, dirty sense of humor, just a genuinely nice lady to shoot with.
The funny thing was my friend is this really really nice guy but you could tell he was just getting more and more frustrated/exasperated by getting a good thrashing. He took it in stride and was a good sport about the whole thing and was very complimentary to her of her playing ability. We all parted ways at the end of the night and had a laugh at our mystery ladies prowess over our friend and headed out to the parking lot.
Talking in the parking lot I noticed a car sitting with its windows cracked and newspaper taped up and I commented to my friend how sad it was that someone was sleeping in the parking lot. He said to me, "oh, you didn't know? That's the woman that was playing with us. She works at Wal-mart and sleeps in her car. When we opened up the tables we saw her out here and asked her if she wanted to come in and play pool." I remember her saying she needed to ask a friend to borrow gas money but I had no idea how hard up she really was.
It's easy sometimes to forget how lucky we are who have a roof over our heads and money to go shoot pool as often as we want. It was a sobering reminder to not take things for granted.
Have a good, fun weekend everybody! I know that even if I'm losing and frustrated it's still a gift to be able to play!
