Earl Strickland's ability

I kinf of get the sense, and I often see people commenting to the effect, that Earl Strickland, because he is such an emotional player, has a gear above many of the pros. i.e. he is capable of better play than them, but it doesn't usually happen that way because his emotions have to be in the right place. I was wondering if anyone knows of any video examples of this, where Strickland is just playing lights out. I'd love to see what he looks like when he's on, if what people say is true.

Cheers,
Pete

get on you tube and look for the video of him playing the Mizz for the championship. His is in great form there and absolutely free wheelin! Great match.

Go to youtube and search for 'color of money earl'. Him and Reyes race to 125. That is some of the best pool I have ever seen by him (and Efren).

Calling Earl an "emotional player" is like calling napalm a "gentle weed control".

hahahaha. truer words have never been spoken.

to OP - watch the entire Color of Money match. Earl absolutely dominated Efren and then Efren played some godlike pool to catch up - but man Earl, for at least the first 75% was just devastating. Earl put up a number of packages throughout the series.

That has got to be the most riveting pool I have ever seen.

I agree.
This match has almost everything you need to know about Earl.
He starts out dominating and running away with a commanding lead playing beautiful pool
only to break down in the 11th hr with a persecution tantrum and blow it.

Earl's talent is not due to his emotions. Earl has a more powerful and straighter stroke then pretty much anyone this game has ever seen. He is the most naturally talented pro player on the planet. Earl's emotions did not cause that stroke or talent, they simply get in the way of it.

the best there was then

I have maybe 4 or 5 Accustats videos of Earl's matches during his prime years which are good examples of what you ask about. These were matches which started out routinely enough, with the score pretty close or tied, and the next thing you see is Earl running 5, 6, or 7 racks to win the match; especially when his 9-ball break was devastating, making 2, 3 balls on the snap......I think some of his opponents in these matches included Steve Mizerak, Buddy Hall, and some other greats I can't recall right now. It didn't matter who he was playing at that time; he was just the best and most dangerous opponent anybody could face. I think Jay said something about this in the past too.

Its been a long time and it seems like he cant get it back?

You must have missed the TAR match between Earl and SVB earlier this year. Also, the last time I checked, he was well up in the ladder for the Mosconi cup for this year.

He's still around, no doubt about it...

hmmm

Earl is emotional when he competes in sports. Take him off the competetive grid and he is a heck of a nice guy.

Personally, from experience I think he is looking for the "thing" that sets him off a little. I did that playing baseball for years. I always played and competed better when I was really pissed off. My game was bumped up a notch at least. Unfortunately what worked for baseball does not work for ME in pool. Getting pissed hurts my pool game.

I'm not defending his antics, but they are what they are. Some hate him for it and some don't. And he is still a lot more tame than what the NFL or the NBA produces on a nightly basis. He is all bark and no bite. SVB just kinda laughed it off last time they met, and even "gave" him a little sharking back. And that was pretty funny.

But there are many players that wished they had the stroke Earl has. Maybe not the Top Dog anymore, but he obviously still can hang with the young mutts still. Just look at his track record in the last 24 months. Pretty impressive for an "old dude" ;)

Have you ever seen earl play, ever?

I am not sure how you could ask this question if you had ever seen him play, lately, or in the past.

In the late late '70s then '80s & '90s he was super strong then died out for a while.
now he is back & back very strong.
while playing he can at some points be an a$$hole, but he is still playing strong.

You hit the nail on the head with this suggestion. I have the video of Earl vs Efren in Hong Kong which is a race to 120 winner take all for $100 K and it's some of the best 9 ball i've ever seen........What a Match!

Hes a great player ,his experience and practice is the reason for that..

Now Earl as a individual ,is a genuine A$*H*l* !!!

Do you know him well?

i do not know him well but any time that i have been around him, when he is not in a heated emotional state while playing; he seems like a very nice person.

Have you personally had a different experience?
