Shaft wood processing. - 08-26-2011, 05:33 PM
"Like I said, I am not an expert on the drying of wood. I am a designer/machinist that has always wanted to be in the Cue Industry. And as a business owner with family members in the wood mill business in the UP I inquired about producing these shaft blanks and here we are. I guarantee if you process this wood like you would any other shaft material you will be happy with the results. Fair" ?

Then.....

LTB Quarter Sawn Maple Pool Cue Shaft blanks
June 23, 2011 05:42AM

Hello, I am a US Pool Cue Lumber supplier. I am looking for a Canadian company that can supply Canadian Hard Rock Maple, that is Quarter Sawn, with extremely tight and straight grained lumber. I would prefer to buy the wood processed into 1"x1"x30" blanks that are used for Pool Cue Shafts.

This material needs to be very clear, white sapwood. I can not take mixed white/brown lumber. I can however take a limited supply of Brown heartwood that comes along with processing the logs. I am looking for someone that fells trees for this process in the winter months to limit the amount of sugar in the finished wood.

Please contact me ASAP as I am in need of a new supplier very soon.

Thank you,
Geoff Dilley

Holy Cow, that's $13.00 AA+ shaftwood? It is terrible. Who sold you that junk? Well look at the bright side. You could go into the toilet plunger handle business instead of cuemaking.

For those of use who lack the experience, can you elaborate on why these pieces are so bad?

Thanks
Chris

Take the very first picture. Look at the 2nd dowel. There are about 7 grain lines running out the side of the shaft over a span of about 5 inches. The grain is probably running 45 degrees to the cut. That is NOT good.

Look at #5. Again, there are 7 grain lines running out. The span is longer than 5 inches, but it is still quite bad.

Personally, if the blanks are quite oversized, I would not be bothered by the skip, but the fact that they are there combined with the less than stellar run out and the damage/split showing in the couple of pictures is in general bad, IMO.

There are probably some quite fine shafts in there...hard to tell. I kind of like the colors (could be a little burn from a doweler so hard to say on the color from an internet pic), but it looks like poor quality over all for $13 a piece. In general, I have gotten better looking dowels for less. I would hope to pay $8 a piece tops for a lot like that called mixed grade. They simply are not AA IMO. It is a bogus grading label anyway.

All just my opinion.

I bet it is someone who will yell at you, saying you "should only be 2 cuts into the wood" when you simply mention some of it is full of mineral?

Asks you to start taking cuts on the 10 pieces out of 50 that weren't what you ordered and were already warped, in the hopes that they might end up ok?

Says he only does exchanges and not refunds because "he doesn't know what he is getting back, because he doesn't mark them"? Were yours marked Leon? Mine were graded with markings.

Someone who you ask the reasons he changed the descriptions of AA+, they have zero run out/then have some run out, only to have him say he never did. Then says that is why his messages to you are condescending? That he is sick of trying to explain it? That guy?

I've decided I'm not sending my rejects back either. I never want to deal with him again. I didn't realize he the guy who copped an attitude in a post where he started selling knock offs of Tom Datum's taper set up, or I never would have dealt with him.

At least you didn't spend close to 800 dollars.

You may notice in these pictures that some of these don't even hit the 12 gpi and that they may have a hint of run out.

Here is where he never changed his grading

run out, some run out? There IS a difference. 14-19 or 12-15 gpi? There IS a difference! ALL I ordered were from the first batch.

I had a problem with the first order of 25... i got one good shaft out of 25 i payed 38.00 dollars for shipping....another 29.00 to ship them back . i was going to order 100 shafts the first time but man I'm glad i didn't :(

I hope GPD does the right thing after these incidents.

I just sent 25 melamine ferrules back to him .

He sent me a pm about his shaft wood, glad I didn't have the green to spend at that time. In my humble opinion, these problems should be posted into his threads advertising his wares.... this way, future people will know when they buy. Posting a seperate thread, most people will miss the warnings.

I don't even care what he does anymore Joey. I did some searching last night and realized who this person was.

Here is someone who wants to make a living off of us. I like how he turns into "self preservation" mode so fast. I particularly like his use of "hahahahahahah". Instead of simply diffusing a situation and answering question he instantly turns TYPE A.

Geof, what is posted here are pictures and facts. I'm sure others are happy with you, but I am not and neither are several others.

Someone who is considering doing business with you should know the good and the bad. You are unlike ANYONE I have ever done business with or hope to ever do business with again.

Trent posted on one of his threads, stating his experience. Geof promised him some free samples and he just decided not to send them.

He had Trent's post, along with HIS rude comments, removed. In the post his reason was "excuse me, but I was busy with paying customers".

Excuse me, but don't make promises you can't or simply don't want to keep.

Randy,
I'm still hoping Geof does the right thing here.
Take those sub-par dowels represented as AA grade and send the right dowels . Those are roll-the-dice $3 dowels to me . And if someone grades those dowels ( instead of random picks ) he must have a bad case of myopia. Hell, he shouldn't even take them back. Just get pics that Leon bandsawed them. For the price of shipping, they're not worth sending back.
I might be delivering 100 honey colored shaft dowels there next month.

Check em out and if I get more after, I'll let you in on some.

And what exactly is it that you think you are showing here? You are showing one of the 2 cathedral sides of every piece of shaft wood that's ever been cut. Take a picture of the grain side of the wood Leon so everyone on here can see how perfectly straight every one of the 15-19GPI that wood is. All I see beside that is a little snipe from a doweling machine. And, no, actually it wasn't $13.00 wood, it was $12.00 a piece.

Comment on my pics and screen shots since you seem to have time to comment. Is mine 15-19 gpi straight grained wood? I take it his 12.00 wood is the same 12 and 13 dollar a piece wood I bought?
