wow.....banned??? Thats a first....I don't think even brianna got that treatment when he deserved it....but this guy hasn't got a clue as to what good shaft wood is......I pay about 1.25 a shaft for high quality stuff.......course I have to buy in bulk and hand pick the boards and then spend time cutting it up.....but you learn a thing or two about shaft wood when you do that......

The NEAREST(that I have found) place to me that sells boards is an hour and a half away. I went through some boards and the decent ones were few and far between.

I ordered some rift sawn from Bell awhile back and cut it, and a bunch of PH, from lumber. That is the extent of my experience with lumber. We have nice weather in Ventura, but not alot of quatersawn maple.

Yikes

I just want to say I love all you guys, even if I didn't " butcher " wood for a hobby the entertainment level of these forums is second to none. From the bottom of my heart. THANK YOU.

this guy was a joke!

Shaft wood processing. - 08-26-2011, 05:33 PM
"Like I said, I am not an expert on the drying of wood. I am a designer/machinist that has always wanted to be in the Cue Industry. And as a business owner with family members in the wood mill business in the UP I inquired about producing these shaft blanks and here we are. I guarantee if you process this wood like you would any other shaft material you will be happy with the results. Fair" ?

LTB Quarter Sawn Maple Pool Cue Shaft blanks
June 23, 2011 05:42AM

Hello, I am a US Pool Cue Lumber supplier. I am looking for a Canadian company that can supply Canadian Hard Rock Maple, that is Quarter Sawn, with extremely tight and straight grained lumber. I would prefer to buy the wood processed into 1"x1"x30" blanks that are used for Pool Cue Shafts.

This material needs to be very clear, white sapwood. I can not take mixed white/brown lumber. I can however take a limited supply of Brown heartwood that comes along with processing the logs. I am looking for someone that fells trees for this process in the winter months to limit the amount of sugar in the finished wood.

Please contact me ASAP as I am in need of a new supplier very soon.

Thank you,
Geoff Dilley

He looked for a suppler, found one, and claimed it was family? Am I reading that correctly or is it the "pills" :)

Well, ultimately he is ruining himself, regardless of where he came from.

I was lead to believe It was family also. From a PM sent to Me-

Anyway, the reason I am writing is, I am in the Shaft Wood Business now. I have family members that are in the Maple Milling business in the UP of Michigan. My Uncle knows pretty much anything and everything there is to know about selecting, cutting, drying, seasoning and milling maple for whatever application you need it for. After some extensive research, and meeting with the mill guys, we have perfected the shaft wood process.

So, check this out. I need some of the old school key players on A-Z that are respected by the majority of the guys on here, like yourself to get some of my shaft wood and ring in on my listings with their opinions and give me an honest thumbs up. I'm in no way asking for anyone to say anything that isn't 100% true. What I do know is that if I got some of my shaft squares in your hands you will be thoroughly impressed with the quality of the wood, its fantastic! Do you regularly buy shaft wood ? I'm sure you have your old trusty supplier, but give me a shot. Does this sound like something you may be open to doing, If I gave you a really really really sweet deal on some of my super dooper high quality AA+ & AAA+ Shaft Squares?

Glad that I Didn't have the funds at the time, and waited to see what other people's reviews were before making any deal, because for sure I would have gave an honest opinion, and looks Like that might not have went over so well. I Feel bad for those that Got burned though. He seemed like a nice enough fella in PM's, but looks like he got in over his head with his new business venture.

I've dealt with guys from the mill industry that were trying to get into the shaft business before, and They usually ask what I look for, as they are trying to learn more about the business. I know It has to be disheartening for them when they realize what a small percentage of their stock is actually suitable for good shaft wood.

Phenolic

On 9/19/11 I placed a small order with Geoff for some phenolic. He had replied to my posting that I was looking for some brown phenolic.

Anyway, on 10/3/11 I PM'd him asking if he shipped the phenolic since it hadn't been delivered.
He replied on 10/4/11 saying there was some sort of shipping mistake and that he would get it out that day.

No phenolic and the guy is banned now. By all the reviews here, I'm guessing I'll never get my order. Just another AZ conman? Glad it was just a small order. Feel sorry for the guys that invested time and money with him.

I tried to order some on that from him too, but he kept trying to tell me i didnt want it. Im stubborn, but he convinced me, lol.

I guess I get the stupid prize for spending the most money with him?

I suppose there are some that are still happy with what they received, although I bet none of them were called "geniuses"

What can I do but laugh?

Leon, Good detective work! No wonder he wanted the name of my Canadian supplier so bad. I take some of the blame myself for not throwing up the flag faster and warning everyone else what crap the shaftwood was that I got from him. Will not happen again.

Years ago I spoke with the production manager at Wolf River Lumber and explained to him what I wanted in shaft wood. I even gave him a sample that he could base the product on. These guys supply the largest instrument factories in the world, as well as cabinet & furniture manufacturers. We agreed on how much i'd buy, an amount that he believed would justify the custom job. He couldn't even come close, and knew so. He told me how cue manufacturing companies had tried making the same deal before but none were ever happy. He left me with the promise that he'd do his best to meet my demand on quality, but not to hope for anything because that grade of maple is rarer than the highest figured stuff. They cut millions of BF of maple annually & to pick through board by board to meet the demand for wood like my sample, would be like sending his mill operators to find a needle in a haystack. He did promise to try, and said when and IF he met the quota that we agreed would be fair, he'd get in touch. Never happened.

Moral of the story is that one of the largest suppliers of custom maple lumber in the world, a very well skilled & knowledgeable production manager, couldn't produce what I wanted in cue shaft wood. He clearly knows the industry & knows that "pallet loads" of that quality of wood simply doesn't exist. So when you see somebody advertising that they have it & there's plenty where it came from, you can bet your ass they are either lying or clueless or both. Snake oil. I log & mill my own shafts, as well as hand pick lumber from other sources. I know from first hand experience what the gentleman from Wolf River was telling me is absolute truth. There simply is no abundance of top grade shaft maple ANYWHERE in the world (maybe Russia's large leaf forests) and that very simply dictates that NOBODY has an abundance of it.

Shaftwood Grading

Geoff,
Making cues is a really hard thing to learn. I'm sure that grading and selling shaftwood is just as hard to learn. Don't be defensive, don't let everyone get you down. Try and grade a little better and be honest, give returns where you need to and live up to your word. Sure some people won't give you a break, but others will if you try. Calm down, don't get excited, you'll be able to sell the shafts. Everyone needs them, but it's so hard to find good shaftwood at good prices. Keep on plugging, I'm sure you'll be able to get along better with everyone as soon as you iron out the problems one at a time.

Good Luck, hope you do better....
ps don't screw anybody, even if they talk bad of you,,,you have to be honorable no matter what people say...if for nobody else, just for YOURSELF.....

A well written statement. I'm going to burn those words into my brain. Thank you Eric.

I couldn't agree more, but he won't calm down.

He won't take good advice.

He takes shots and insults people who HAVEN'T done him wrong or called him names.

I put up with ALOT before I even STARTED to reciprocate his abuse and then I was fairly diplomatic at it is in THIS thread.

He is NOT honorable and never will be...I'm sorry, but he "aint" gonna change.

Bill, have you even read what he said in this thread??

If you would like his number I would GLADLY give it to you.

JerseyBill, It's good to believe in people. I believe in giving second and third chances to everyone, but when someone keeps pointing at everybody else and not taking responsibility for their actions it's time to draw the line. He came into this community knowing that everyone is always looking for good shaftwood and took advantage of that. Geoff is nothing but an opportunist and has nothing to offer to anyone here.
