Cues VS. Economy

Guys...I agree with alot that has been said...I just find it ironic that Black Boar for instance...its a cue that is touted for its playability, however the starting price point is eight thousand. How many "players", short stop's or semi pro's are going to have the cash for it? Cues are getting fancier everyday, and are pretty to look at, but playability is what I want the most. The way things are going now only the collectors are the ones that can afford these cues, and very few collectors can string 1 rack together:) Makes me regret my youthful indiscretions as I personally have owned 6 BB, but this was when the price break was aroound 1500...oh how i wish I had kept them!

I agree 100% Jon.

It is NOT up to everyone here to watch everyone else's backside. Many of us do, as a courtesy, but it is not required. Lisa

It's also not members job to watch the forum's backside for trivial infractions. So quit trying to be a hall monitor already.

As I am sure all of you know I am new to this site. I did not and do not mean any offense or rule infractions that I may have done. My OP was simply to get a discussion started on the state of cues and the pricing therein. While my use of an actual cue from this site was, in hind site, in poor taste, I meant no offense. I have been away from the billiards game for a while and was just suprised at some of the pricing I was seeing...

One thing you will learn here is that it's almost impossible to have an opinion that doesn't offend someone.

Cue Pricing - Where Things are Made - How Many People Work in a Shop - What Are They Made Of - What Are The Politics of the Maker - Cue Design - Glue Lines - Full Splices - Conversions - Modern/Old Techniques - CNC vs. Bowie Knife - Tips - Chalk - Animal Parts - Wood Sources - Nuthuggers - Flippers - Dealers - Mean People - Nice People - Who Did What First - Holy Grails - Hype - and so on...... all these topics have armies at the ready on each side of the line ready to go into battle at the slightest provocation.

People come to this forum like Rumpelstiltskin with no clue that whatever topic is on their mind has already been fought over viciously a hundred times. People who would give each other the shirt off their backs in person wish death upon each other over these life-altering topics.

If there is a God he is laughing his ass off at the millions of people like us wasting our precious time on this Earth typing away and interacting with each other in such a frivolous way. BUT maybe it's not so frivolous. Maybe as a species this time is the time we really do grow intellectually by getting all this hate out through online discussion rather than through actual violence. Maybe the end result is that we will all be tougher mentally and realize that 90% of the opinions we espouse are meaningless to the world at large.

At least I have a personal hope that this is where the path leads. I don't want to think of my daughter hopelessly glued to the keyboard arguing about yesterday's news.

I guess I better start leading by example. :-)

Nicely written John. I too will make some changes

I'd like to think rich people are idiots because they buy ridiculously priced stuff. But fact is, if I had their brain, i'd be rich like them & would be buying ridiculously priced stuff, too. I guess all the stupid people found the money & all of us brilliant & wise geniuses can't seem to get any of it. So we'll just sit around & criticize the dumb rich folks and speculate how things should be. And lord knows they can't play pool for shit. They suck at it & only buy expensive cues so they at least look good. I guess they were too busy making money so they could enjoy finer things in life and enjoy pool, rather than wasting their time trying to get good at it so they could sit around the pool room & argue for hours about getting a $20 set.

Fatboy (hope you don't mind me using you as an example) can buy a $10G Black Boar like I buy a Tootsie Roll candy bar at Wal-Mart. I want it, I buy it, I enjoy it, & it's never an after thought. Is a Tootsie Roll really worth a dollar? Who cares? I want it & it's only a dollar. Could I get an off brand for a dime? Probably. Would it taste good? Probably. But I want the Tootsie Roll & never even consider the notion that there may be cheaper candy because frankly, I don't care. I like Tootsie Rolls. If I only had a quarter then hell yeah i'd buy the dime candy & then ***** the whole time that Tootsie Rolls are way overpriced. I'd tell myself that the dime candy tastes just as good, or even better, and actually believe it. I'd enjoy the hell out of that dime candy. But you can bet your ass if I had a grand in my pocket, my next piece of candy would be a Tootsie Roll & I wouldn't even think twice about it.

Really, it's not? Well, the forums Mods can't be everywhere at once, so it is in fact up to us to report when we witness questionable behavior. If you don't like it, there are other billiard/pool forums on the net you can investigate to see if they are a better 'fit' for you.

Jim,
She can't tell me anything because I usually don't read her posts.

Mark

Darn shame.....you have missed some pretty informative content in many, many of those posts. Others, not so much.

Not really sure what your 'issue' is with me, since we have had little to no interaction prior to here. I am not saying you do not have a valid point...not at all. There have been times when I knew that a pricing was out of line, or that I have heard that there was something questionable about the item...and really wanted to post something. But, without the cold hard facts to back up any allegations, I was pretty much dead in the water. Doesn't mean that I may not have made a few PM contacts regarding the matter.

As they say...there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Lisa,
I love you like a sister and I know you are well respected on AZ. But you singled me out of all the other replies. Plus, you did it on a previous thread. My first post was an obvious joke. And then you come with that tone of yours trying to set me straight. And I don't need to be mother goosed by you about the rules. Trust me, I know the price of things, especially cues and billiard related stuff. I certainly don't need your input because I don't ever buy at retail levels. I am a bargain shopper. And there is a certain level for me to become a buyer. Plus, you quoted the rules but this is not in a for sale thread. So I'm pretty sure I can express my displeasure regarding ridiculous pricing in general terms. And I'm a buyer not a seller. So my voice will be heard no matter what if you want my money.
Thanks,
Mark

EDIT: Lisa, in fact, please go back and read my first post and then read you first response to my first post. Did you not realize I was joking? And how would you react to your "set me straight" tone? I am a cue buying expert. Your post was disrespectful. PERIOD. I just want to make sure you don't think I am apologizing to you right now. CARRY ON

i dont think anyone was suggesting that a person that pays 10g for a cue is an idiot i think the point is that for a player who knows what he wants he doesnt have to spend that kind of money to get the best player for him or her but they can if they choose get an equally good player in that price range if the cue maker is willing to take the time to work with them.

No harm, no foul. I obviously misinterpreted your post. There is also/was a similarly veined thread, and I may have gotten the two mixed up. For that I apologize.

Hey, who doesn't love to save money?! It's typically why I tend to work with a maker directly anymore...besides, it's more fun that way!!

I like it just fine here. Lots of good folks and information. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'll keep it in mind if things do get overbearing. I've noticed during my life that no one respects a snitch, not even those who they tattle to. My emphasis was on "trivial".

Lisa,
We are cool. But I don't think you misinterpreted my post at all. Because you posted your "set me straight" post and then replied to Jon saying I was being a smarta$$. If you knew I was being a smarta$$ why did you yell at me and put me in a time out before hand? We are cool and I think I am starting to like you and I will be reading your posts from now on. Do you ever administer punishment like paddling and stuff with your scoldings?

Would you like me to administer punishment? :grin-devilish:

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

wasn't that Dz that was making the cues that looked like walmart budwizer cues? those are sneaky!

I just saw this thread and hope nobody is upset that I'm bringing it back on-topic.

To answer your question, yes, I was making these over 10 yrs ago when the Bud blanks were much "meatier". The newer blanks, IMO, aren't worth the bother.

I found this old, left-over blank a short time ago & converted it on a whim. There is about 4" of cocobolo inserted into the forearm to provide a solid mount for the joint pin. The original joint is one of the parts shown after it was cut off.

Cues

Remember your Economy class in school, all about SUPPLY & DEMAND ! If you go right to the cue maker yourself, everything is with-in reason and you'll get a good deal. So either wait on these LONGGGGGGGG lists which now for some are 8 years ++++ to get a cue, some makers you can't even get on the list anymore. So the 2nd hand market, if you want that cue, your going to have to fork over some major cash. Just Imagine how many pool players & collectors their are and then imagine a maker that only puts out about 5 cues a year ?????? Their you have it ! ! !
