An upsetting shot!

At league I was playing this guy and he left me safe by just barely missing his 2 ball in the corner pocket. (I'm stripes) He was quite pleased with himself until I walked up and shot in his 2 ball, giving him ball in hand. He got pissed and yelled about it for several minutes but in the end there was nothing he could really do because it was a legal shot.

Finally after some complaining he took his shot, he hit the 8 ball a little to hard and left me a shot on the 11. I got out from there and that was the end of the match.

The rest of the night he was moaning about that shot, that I was playing chicken s*** pool. I offered to play him a few sets of 9 ball for 200.00 a set and he said no, not if I'm gonna play like that!

So what do you guys think? Chicken or smart pool? How would you play it?

There is no such thing as chicken shi* pool as long as you are playing within the rules. There is no such thing as a safety really, there is just poor offense. He should have ran out. Hahahaha I would laugh in his face until he learns the game of pool is closer to a game of chess than a gun fight!

I wonder if the Red Coats said to the Americans, "Hey, your playing chicken shi* war!" It's not fair that we are wearing these bright red uniforms and standing in the middle of a field while you are in cam-o's hiding behind trees! Haahahahah I would laugh in the face of the British until they learned how to fight a war!

smart move but "I" consider it chicken shit play. you could have tried to just graze your stripe for a safety and/or keep your ball frozen to the 8 somehow giving him a tough shot on the 8. It also wouldn't be hard for him to safety you also with those balls positioned like that.

Smart shot?
You actually have at least one nice safety shot without shooting in your opponent's ball: simply roll the CB into the stripe and leave it behind the 8. Problem with this is that your opponent may kick in his ball and then have a safety shot rolling into the 8. Your choice is probably the best option, although with BIH your opponent still had a safety to play against you, but decided to go for the shot. You played by the rules.

I considered doing that, (grazing the 11) but because he had the hanger I decided that taking away that option was better for me.

If you play like that, you're gonna lose against a decent player...often.

The OP played the shot sequence correctly --- it's prob the only way to play it. Ticking balls that are locking up the game ball inevitably equate to "unlocking" the game ball, resulting in a slash in the loss column.

There's no such thing as chicken shit pool. You either play within the rules or you don't. That's like saying a hail-mary is a chicken shit play in football or an overhand-right is a chicken-shit punch in fighting.

The OP played within the rules and won. If I missed that two, I'd be sick because I'd know what was next. Unlike his opponent, I'd intentionally foul back to him. I believe this would result in a draw - which is better than a loss (after a few more intentionals).

p.s. i'm assuming the 8 ball is frozen.

This is probably why i loose often to good players lol :) I have played people that intentionally fired balls in a pocket rather than break a cluster, etc. It just doesn't feel right to me but that's just my opinion.

You made a good play, nothing wrong with it at all.. Anyone who call's it Chicken sh@@ is probably not much of a pool player at all, no CHAMPion to be sure! ;) Just messing with Champ, but you played it the way I would have.

I used to feel the same way until I started to get the shits of losing.

well the above bold is true lol :)

I consider myself to be somewhat of an authority on 'chicken sh1t', and I firmly believe (yes, pun intended :D) that the choice the op made to pot the hanging 2 ball, was a good decision.

The opponent should have been able, with ball in hand, to play a productive safety. But, apparently, as Neil said, he went haywire and instead, made a bad play.

There are some people around my neck of the woods who still think if you use a bridge that you are playing chicken sh1t pool.

It's a chicken-sh!t move, but not the way most think. Your move made him scared and confused, made HIM a chicken. It also made him sh!t himself on his shot, leaving you a shot to win with. That is exactly what you want to do. Put a move on him that will make him go brain-dead, and then do something stupid to give you the win.

Chris:

I agree with Neil here. You played a chess move, but probably (and unfortunately) against a knuckles-dragging-on-the-ground bar banger who doesn't have enough development beyond the brain stem to appreciate the "move." This is the same type who thinks "bar rules" (e.g. calling every little contact; all offense all the time; and safety play is "chickensh!t") is "honorable pool."

It was his fault he was in this position. Just the fact that he squealed with delight when he barely missed the 2-ball, hanging it in the pocket, thinking he "had you" -- should give you enough of an indicator of the type of player he is. To anyone else who plays this game at a decently high level, the shot you played was clear and nearly a no-brainer -- the old 8-ball mantra of putting your opponent back in the driver's seat of having to break that 11-ball/8-ball cluster up, and try to get a safety out of it. He revolted precisely because it became clear to him that he didn't think it through.

Great job!

Actually, I would be glad with ball in hand at that point.. I would just play safe on the eight ball and make you kick at your stripe... I'm pretty sure I would win the game from here.

You should be happy your opponent can't play or at least was troubled by your choice of shots to think of the proper solution.

I don't think the shot you did was necessarily the correct shot in this situation... I think you have better odds to win if you make them kick at a ball and try to play shape, than to have ball in hand in which to play safe on.

There are actually many different options here to play safe that put you in a bad spot.

Spot on!!!!!!!!!

Gotta love a Neil response.....Greenie for you

A legal shot requires that no fouls occur. The shot was a foul. A shot containing a foul is not a legal shot.

However, it was a perfectly FINE (or acceptable) shot; and your opponent got what the rules specify (BIH) and then blew it.

There is no such thing as Chiken S**t" pool.

No one would argue that shooting the 2B was a crafty play, but I wouldn't have done it. My conscience would not allow me to shoot at my opponent's ball(s). Besides, you didn't necessarily win the game with the shot against a smarter player by giving up BIH.

You're on 1 foul & either locked behind the 8B (assuming it's at least a 1/4" off the rail) or shooting from the upper right corner pocket with the 11B as close to the 8B as possible & hopefully frozen to the long rail.
