Mark Griffin TAR Interview - My Thoughts

I'm calling BS. Someone post some dates of TARS first broadcast the IPT please. JCIN?

The IPT's first stream was Archer vs Strickland on Dec. 19th, 2007. I'm pretty sure TAR's first match with Corey and Shane was September 2007, but I'm pretty sure they streamed a tournament before that, but I can't remember for sure.

KT didn't copy streaming billiards, he founded it. After that TAR copied him. And it seems like room owners are going to copy TAR.

But prior to KT streaming, ESPN was the main source of billiard content distribution. So billiards streaming didn't go big until KT blew it up then imitators watered it down and now room owners are trying to rebuild it.

The IPT events flunked then the IPT challenge matches began. And that is what TAR copies, IPT challenge match. Except at a smaller level. Smaller meaning longer matches and more misses, its like waiting for the first person to get tired. A big level is seeing players well rested and putting their all on the line in a short amount of time. It is bigger that way because players can't rely on someone else getting tired to win. In a short match a player is willing to risk more and play big, than to play safe like in a long event, where they know they can afford a few mistakes.

I never said copying another persons' idea is bad. Let just give credit when credit is due. Usually people come up with similiar ideas independent of each other but the first person to act on it gets the credit. In this case through the IPT Kevin gets the credit. That is all I said. Getting all emotional and whining about how insecure your thoughts on the idea are doesn't change what happened.

Who are you? You are delusional and obviously still in love with Kevin Trudeau. Most of us realized that relationship was broken and have moved on.

The LIVE STREAMING of big events was pioneered by Billiard Club Network and AccuStats before TAR and before the IPT. The IPT never streamed ANY of their tournaments. Despite dumping SOOOO much money into the events they didn't stream them.

When they finally did start streaming some of the EXHIBITION matches they used Dave Segal's company who is a member here and STIFFED him on the fees. So stop being a jerk with the "IPT invented modern pool" crap.

From TAR's website

The Action Report was started as a tiny website in 2007.

The IPT showed that there is an online demand for streaming or online video archives. Still back during IPT days, TAR was still just a tiny website.

IPT set the scene then TAR filled in when the IPT left the market open for them.

I completely agree about Archer vs Strickland in 2007 of december.

Quit acting like such a geek. We all know how big the waves the IPT created were. No sense in getting all emotional about it, its been three years. Those wounds should have healed or completed scarred you for life. Actually 6 years since the first IPT event was in 2005 around the same time IPT offered online video. I am just as shocked as you are that his website is still running.

It seems you've been scarred for life, I suggest you use the ignore feature if you can't handle one post about a past promoter in the billiards industry.

I just have to ask, are you currently on any medication, or at least supposed to be? If not, you should really seek some help. Seriously, they set the scene? I mean you've got to be a complete and deliberate troll to keep spewing this BS from your mouth.

Hey Beav,

I remember the very first pod cast bar TAR and it wasn't an organized match. I was JCIN in a bar trying to stir action. I remember him saying it was the first ever live broadcasting of action. He may or may not have been the first to stream pool live, but he was definitely close and most definitely way before KY ever thought about starting the IPT. I also distinctly remember when KT switched the format and remember thinking he stole the idea from TAR.

Anyway, I'm done feeding the troll.

Hey I have a great idea!! Let's waste a shot ton of time talking about what didn't work or what doesn't matter instead of what could work.

You know what works? The DCC, APA, BCA, VNEA, US Open, Mosconi Cup, TAR, Ultimate 10ball and prostitution.

Some advice: Don't post while intoxicated.

I can manage to put up with your creative opinions. But there is being creative and then there is just drunk posting.

Your most recent post was a drunk post.

If you can't handle a small comment, just read about a different one. No one is expecting you to go over every detail of every post. Just let it go.

hehe.. beav, this guy/gal is one of those people that live in their own little world. They dream up all these crazy, delusional, incoherent ideas and then state them as fact for the lucky readers of azb. They ramble on and on and there's nothing anyone could say to make them alter their original ramblings. It just goes "whooooosh" right thru the ear holes.

We're blessed to have these people, to share with us the "real answers" to any and all questions.:D Let's all join hands and count our blessings that they have chosen azb to set us straight on all things pool related.

Don't fight it, embrace it, for they have spoken, and therefore it is.

Yes, great suggestion.

More room owners copy the TAR format (was that a crowd pleaser).

More business people should involve players in business operations. For example, instead of just picking dates for an event, run over the scheduling of the event with players. See if having a 9PM match that runs till midnight followed up with a 9AM match makes sense. Stuff like that. I know saving money on event spaces makes prize money bigger, but maybe the players think sleep is worth a smaller payout, especially if they are time lagged.

And lastly pros should take more ownership of the industry by organizing the players in their area. Something simple like leagues for people that have to travel really far for league play. Or organizing players so they can find other people to play, if there aren't enough for a league. Geographic boundaries tend to be the big challenge in the pool world, pro players deal with those challenges, they should know some tricks for amateurs or after work regulars.

THANK YOU sjm for starting a wonderful thread with great input. It was very helpful to improving TAR podcast.

This thread seems have lost it's direction but I just wanted to thank sjm and everyone who contributed.

This isn't helping develop new solutions.

Try to stay on task. If you want to talk about minor details write a book or something.

Who said I am shocked that the website is still up? Why wouldn't it be? Now he can "sell" subscriptions to any and all people who happen to stumble across the website and jack their credit cards with false charges as many people have reported that the "IPT" (or whatever company actually charges the cards) does.

One thing that the IPT has is a lot of high quality 8 ball on video. Maybe someday someone will subscribe, download all the videos and release them for free on the web.

I am not getting all emotional. Just pointing out, along with others that you are delusional if you think that the IPT "invented" anything.

What the IPT proved is that with a big enough carrot people will follow. That's a universal truth. Kevin made a grand speech that got everyone fired up as grand speeches surrounded by pomp tend to do. He projected power and ability and people respect that and try to align with it. Especially people like the "pros" who are always struggling to make ends meet because the expenses of the road outweigh the income for most of them. Most of them don't want to look at their profession as a job or a business and don't treat it that way.

So when a messiah shows up who says that this little side project he is funding for three years which isn't even going to make a tiny dent in his fortune if it goes bad then of course the players are going to do what he wants and acquiesce to whatever demands he makes. And of course that is going to make waves.

No one is disputing that. What we are TRYING to talk about is what happens NOW with the people we have to work with NOW. Do we care about the professional game in the USA and if so then what steps are needed to sustain it? The IPT failed to create a sustainable model for a variety of reasons. Is their model workable? Many of us think that it could work on a smaller scale. But it still requires a tremendous effort that I think no one is willing to make.

You say that all that's needed is for the pros to rise up and organize. Good luck with that.

Denigrating the few people who are trying to bring us high-quality pool entertainment is certainly not in the least productive.

Ok key board warrior. Everyone can see you're nothing more than a troll at this point. Have fun continuing to show your ass.

I didn't know that.

Lou Figueroa
couldn't of happened
to a nicer guy :-)

This is a really crappy thing of you to say. Despite all of our disagreements if your anniversary Gina was stolen I would not make such a remark about you and I am pretty sure Dave wouldn't either.

Big deal, you both stand on opposites sides of a how-to-play-pool debate and both of you have made very nasty comments about each other. But neither of you deserves to be stolen from.

Don't be an _________ (sorry I am on "language" warning), you are a better guy than that.

I have been wondering the same thing.

If they can't handle a little criticism how do they expect to win over pool players? The best chance they have is offering money, because they aren't half as talented as Kevin was with talking (Kevin, founder of the IPT).

Some like to remember the damage done by the IPT, others can remember all the good it did. Whatever the case, it happened and people are having a hard time living up to the standards it set.

The standards? Kevin definitely took the airbarrel to a new level. And since promoters around the world are stiffing, slow paying, taking out "fees and taxes" and jacking with formats and rules I'd say that they are following Kevin's lead quite well.

If Kevin showed up tomorrow and did it all exactly the same way then just about everyone would be on board again.

That's the nature of life. People who show up with food get followed.
