I am selling an original 1964 Harvey Martin embossed Leather Cue Case. This case is scuffed and dirty and missing the handle. The latch works perfect and the lid fits tight. The lining is original and intact. The leather is original and intact, just very scuffed and way dirty. The handle is long gone.

I took this case because I really wanted to see what a Martin case would go for on eBay. I've had 1 Martin and 2 Ginas in the past and in all 3 instances, I sold those cases along with the cues and learned nothing. Perhaps because of the condition this case is not going to be the best learning experience. I've had (and turned down) a $500 offer. I've had 2 buyers tell me I was crazy not to take it and they might be right. Anybody wants to go $650, I'll sell it outright and learn on one that's in better shape, otherwise it will go to eBay along with a pretty cool Martin style TAD this Sunday.

I know a little more now than I did when I posted the case here. I've had 3 offers, the highest of which is $300, which is probably fair, but at that level I'm going to eBay to make sure.

Martin case

Kevin, where is Martin Cases stamped? bottom, or inside lid? i'm pursuing a all original Martin cue & case would go nice with it. but by the time that happens, your case will be gone. nice case, regardless of condition, its part of the past. historical. someone will be very fortunate to add to their collection. regards, don

Its inside the lid. I'm thinking the grime might clean up OK, and then you'd just be stuck with the scuffing (which really isn't that awful bad) and that pesky no handle (which is probably why its so grimy from where the owner put his hands).

I've had a $500 offer and I just couldn't do it, I really want to see what a Martin will do on eBay, but this is maybe not the best example for that. First $650 owns it, other than that, I'm going to eBay and trying for a million bucks (and taking the chance that it sells out for $150 or something).

I'm with you on the historical value, and yeah, if you've got a collected Martin sitting in your closet in a Fellini or something, this case would be a fine addition. I obviously wish it was in better condition. but it wasn't like I could pass on this one and take the pristine one. This is what there was so I grabbed it up. The owner had a great 1960s TAD #7, which he thought was a Martin. Tad so completely tributed his former boss that I had to take a second look before I knew it was a TAD (and snapped that right up too).

Just out of curiosity, what are peoples opinions on restoring a case like this. You definetly dont see many of them so the originality factor would be a plus for some people but others might like it nice and new. Just like restoring an old for instance, I guess its all up to the owner. I bet this was a really nice case in its prime and to be almost 50 years old its probably seen its fair share of traveling. Maybe someone who knows more about Martin cases can answer this, why would they put the seam on the front of the case?
 
The guy that sold Bank of Mellon wanted a nice one.

The cases are rare and usually wanted to complete certian collections. Problem is them cowboys want mint.

I was there when Bill Stroud bought Luther Lassiter's Martin case in 1971
(I believe), for 300 at Johnston City. That was forty years ago!
Your case isn't so bad. I think you should stand your ground. It would take
some work, but, it could be cleaned up and a new handle like the original made for it. JMHO.
If I had some extra $, I would LOVE to have it.

I don't have any idea why they seam is on the front unless where the latch is is not considered the front. Ron Thomas sometimes puts the latch on the back, we sometimes put the latch on the back. Nora Van Horn put latches on both front and back.

For me if I were going to restore a case like this in this condition then I would strip it and put on new leather. I would first see if I can find similar leather in the right color and print. Then I would carefully strip off the old leather to preserve the pattern for the end cap upholstery. Basically I would try my best to make it just the same as if it were made by Martin.

If the leather was intact then I would endeavor to restore the color and luster of it using a variety of techniques generally used by antique restoration experts.
