all the folks who think earl is nuts are full of shit. look at rogan. no-one bashes him. poor joe. rehab. lol.
all this supposition about earls mental health reminds me of a bunch of women sitting around with nothing to do.

Singer-songwriter Elliott Smith committed suicide while living in one of the cottages owned by my family. I had seen him several times on the property and never knew he was a well known artist. He never said boo to me, so I shined him on too. Later I was to find out he was a serious alcoholic, depressed and a heavy drug user.

Jay I saw Elliot live and have played his music live. I was fascinated by how much pain was in his music so I researched his death.

After a fight with his girlfriend she locked herself in the bathroom. She heard him scream and came out. He turned toward her and had stabbed himself in the heart. He left a note that said,

"I'm so sorry. Love-Elliot. God forgive me."

Be bipolar which always comes with years or decades of not being diagnosed.

You find yourself alone a lot. You find something your good at and can practice without others. This is good because you have again never fit in with others.

You have spent tons of time alone at the table. You know when you have it all together NO ONE can play better. With this talent comes a path to great things. People like you or at least like to watch you. You win tournaments and titles proving how good you can play. You ride this as long as you can.

Now you have what you have never had before, people who want to be your friends or at least say they are. You have the titles you wanted. Tons of people still liked you in your dark times when you were depressed or angry. You have been self medicating all along. You do what you want because you can, until it gets so bad you can't hold it together. You spend years trying to find the right meds some from the doctors and some not.

Something works for a while and you think your cured or at least better. You quit taking the meds and after a little while the downward spiral starts over. Sometimes you quit taking the meds just because you don't like having to take them. You tell yourself there is nothing wrong with me.

Now all this is progressive and snowballs one into another. Your body chemistry changes your skill level is effected you have to adjust your meds. Now while all this is happening time did not stand still, you have gotten older which never helps.

You have shown you have the talent to be number 1 in the world, BUT you still can not grasp the one thing you have always wanted. YOU WANT TO FEEL NORMAL AND FIT IN.

This is just a "possible" scenario, but it is written by someone who has bipolar and always feels the disorder and the meds have cheated him out of the person he could have been. As for the talent I don't have any and who knows Talent might have only made things worse for me

I'll never forget when Shane's backer told Earl if he continued his behavior it wouldn't end well for him. Earl had said he wished he was deaf like Shane etc.

Earl was seething as he leaned in close and yelled, "Well how's it gonna end?!!! How's it gonna end?!!!"

Surprised he doesn't end up tangling more often.

Is the DVD available of the match on the ten footer? And is that scene included?

8up... I am going to quote this over and over..... These words are the truth.... even if the rest of the "normal" world never gets it......

This entire thread has a destructive tone to it. I do not understand why AZbilliards would allow this thread to continue it seems borderline illegal here.

What it really is is that most of us would rather see Earl playing championship caliber pool without the drama. That's what I want.

I remember the first time I ever saw Earl Strickland play. Until then I had only read about him. Think about that for a moment. Back in the late 80s you could only read about players and sometimes catch them on tv but you couldn't see them anytime you wanted on demand like today.

The first time I saw him was the World Championships from Bergheim Germany where he beat Mark Wilson in the finals. Wow! What a player. Never had I seen someone just flat out attack a pool table like that. So much confidence and surety. I said that is the kind of player I want to be and set out trying to play just like him.

Then years later when I was at the US Open I watch him play the Japanese player Okumura I think. Earl was completely out of line and disrespectful and borderline racist. Every time that the Japanese player would make a good shot and get some applause Earl would turn to the crowd while the guy was still at the table and say loudly, "sure, root for the Jap and not the American". He had the whole crowd against him by that point and I am sure many of them were Earl fans like me. I was shocked and appalled to see that.

I mean I can understand getting fired up and being a serious competitor and not wanting to be "friends" with your opponent.

But I can't understand saying things that are just mean-spirited and wrong.

Many of us really do like Earl the player. We wish we had just the amount of skill that he has in his little toe, at least I do. But we are really embarrassed to see him be self-destructive and out of line to others and himself.

At least I speak for myself and I think for others here as well.

It's a bummer that he gets talked about this way. And I can certainly respect a man who stands up for his principles. I have been labeled crazy on here many times because of just that. Earl is unfortunately not only standing up for his principles he is also denigrating anyone who doesn't agree with him, loudly. That is ultimately what's destructive.

Terry, most businesses have a sign near the counter that says "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone." I know I've had that sign prominently posted at all businesses I've owned over the years. I've barred people from coming in, due to their behavior, at poolrooms I've owned in the past, and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. A disruptive customer cannot be allowed to ruin the experience for other people.

And the funny thing is that barring people seems to have a magically calming effect on them as they are back the next week begging to be allowed back in. Strangely enough they are able to modulate their behavior accordingly.

I think only the really crazy people have no ability to regulate their behavior and they are the ones who get removed from society or put on serious drugs. I think that people who just act stupid have the ability to act right when they want something. (me included)

Which is why the people who labeled me crazy on here should be very happy that I am not. Because if I was then the laws against doing violence to others would mean nothing to me. But I value my freedom as any rational person does. Just as most dipsticks who are just jerks value being able to go to the poolroom and will tend to calm down after getting barred once or twice.

Joe Rogan was one of the commentators. How cushy of a playing environment do you think it was for him that the promoters basically gave permission in advance for Earl to start out disrespected? If you want violence used on Earl, instead of skill being used on him, that says more about you than it does him. I will shake Earl's hand next time I see him for showing relative restraint up to the point he went off. If it's true that he is a person who is "off his meds," and he is a paranoid person who thinks he is under an aura of pre-ordained criticism, why bring Joe Rogan in as commentator? I like Joe Rogan, and I admire TAR for all they do. But don't bring in a guy whose only fame in the pool world is making fun of Earl then expect things to go off smoothly when you ought to know they will just go off....without the smoothly. This outburst was inevitable. If we had done vBookie on the likelihood of an outburst under these conditions, rather then the outcome of the match, all the money would have been on Earl, not the other way around.

You have it completely backwards. Joe Rogan, a COMEDIAN, respects Earl so much that he did a piece on him. Earl thought it was funny and knows Joe has the utmost respect for him as a legend of the pool world. You can search the forums for Joe's previous posts about Earl, it's clear he thinks highly of Earl's skill and everything he has accomplished.

I think this may very well be a likely scenario, not just a "possible" scenario. Only one person knows for sure, and at this point, who would believe him? Sad.

I agree... wow. It's very interesting to see what people get out of certain scenerios. People are talking about Earls behaviour in a match this weekend and you're wondering why no one is bashing Joe Rogan.

Out of all these people that are discussing this weekend, many of them that were there and witnessed it in person, not one person anywhere, has ever said anything about Joe and Earl having issues, in fact directly the opposite has been reported, but yet you and one other guy have came up with Joe Rogan as being the catalyst for Earl's behavior.

There has been overwhelming requests hoping Joe at some point would get in the booth. It finally happened and Joe being a PROFESSIONAL commentator, professional enough that he's hired by major TV networks to do prime time commentating, was kind enough to sit in, and you're take is he should "shut up a bit" and what fool was stupid enough to let him get in the booth.

My reaction is same as yours. Disappointing and Wow:)

hmm maybe shane should sue earl for defamation of character for saying what he said about the racking etc.

I understand why you see it this way...

I know that what you are saying is a valid way of thinking. But emotions are below the surface. In school we all used to call this really overweight kid Fat Lard, everyone did. He just smiled and didn't say a thing. This was the Fat Albert era, so it was ok and even encouraged to focus on his weight. You will have to take my word for it that out of the group calling him this, I was the most considerate one and I never thought twice about it. But looking back there is no way this kid thought it was ok that although we liked him we still called him Fat Lard. Someone having done impressions of me would automatically cause an involuntary emotional response in me if I were playing, regardless of whether I got along with that person on the surface. Joe Rogan having respect for Earl's talent is like saying Joe Rogan respects the sun coming up; Earl's talent is an absolute fact, not a result of Rogan's level of respect for him. That talent exists seperately from Rogan's opinion. But having a comedian in the room who is known for doing an good "kooky Earl" impression is not seperate from Rogan himself. It is a direct result of Rogan and would not exist without him having done it. The other fact is that Earl must know that Rogan could beat his ass and humiliate him verbally if not physically if Earl stood up to him at all so he just has to accept it and submit to the alpha male in the room. The "Adult" portion of Earl's brain that calculates speeds and angles can rationalize that Rogan respects him. The "Child" portion of our brain that may take over when doubts creep in is more affected by emotion. I believe the atmosphere was not conducive to having Earl not blow up. Look at the TAR promotional video, when Earl walks in the studio acting goofy like a new kid trying to make friends. I think he just doesn't feel accepted and maybe based on his previous behavior he shouldn't be accepted as completely as he would like. No matter how he plays, I think he knows that in the area of acceptance he is the underdog, and that's a race where Shane had a major head start. I have my opinion, you have yours. I didn't blame anyone, I asked if they should question how they started the race. Maybe we can all learn from it. And yes, I know Earl needs to act right.

Well put, thanks for your perspective. I can definitely believe the whole alpha male/submission behavior. I'm sure it's just another thing Earl has to keep bottled up. Hopefully somebody helps him get the treatment he needs to function normally in society, but until then I don't plan on watching any of his matches.

I must say that we cannot tell if Earl is bipolar. First of all, if he was, he would have missed more tournaments due to the illness (of course we must all realize that there are degrees of bipolar). If you watch Earl in his matches, he doesn't show signs of being bipolar - at least one of the signs being depressed. If Earl was depressed, he could hardly get out of the chair even to shoot. I have always seen Earl jumping out of his chair almost to shoot - NOT typical of a bipolar person!
