$30 Chalk Can Last a lot longer

A few weeks ago I stated on one of the chalk threads that I use the $30 chalk as a base for my Master's chalk. I put a base coat on before I start to play and then only use the Masters before every shot. The base holds the Masters to the tip a lot better. I believe if you took a slow-mo of the tip hitting the CB you wouldn't see half as much chalk flying off as w/o the $30 chalk base. Also to me the combo of chalks has a nice hit/feel to it. Johnnyt

Very interesting. How does this combo affect English? Do you still chalk with the Master after every shot?

Yes I still chalk with the Masters after every shot. Chalking before every shot has been a 60 year routine and i'm not changing now lol. The spin I get with the base on is good, but no different than with a Masters chalked tip covered right IMO. Getting the right spin has more to do with your tip and your stroke. Johnnyt

$30 is ridiculous for one tiny piece of chalk, I could never justify spending that much on it. Ill stick with blue diamond and masters.

Seem kinda silly. The $30 chalk doesnt even touch the CB, is there any reason you should need a "base" for standard chalk? Its free or cheap as $hit, you should be chalking before every shot normally and if you cant get it stick to your tip either your chalk is F'd or your tip is. ;)

But whatever works...... I guess. :O

I never said I was having a problem keeping chalk on and after 60 years I know if my tip is glazed:). Its just that with the base on, then the masters only needs to be put on lightly. Using $30 chalk only, I see no difference in play from just masters chalk. With both on I see/feel a better hitting tip. Johnnyt

I've ended my personal feud with kamui chalk(price). If it makes you happy, do it. Ya only live once.

Thanks Johnny, I will try that. I have a cube and would love it to last longer, but the stuff works great alone. I have a box of IPT chalk that needs to get used too so I will try it that way.

While I agree with the sentiments of your statement on the value of $30 chalk:

A single cube of Masters tends to last me 1.5 years (at 3 hours per day of practice/play). Whether the cost is $0.12 (master) or $30; it makes little difference in the long run.

On the other hand; if you only get 1-2 weeks out of a cube, $30 per cube can add up quickly.

This past weekend was the first time I played in a tournament using the cube of Kamui chalk a friend gifted to me. I didn't miscue once. In that regard, the chalk is well worth the money. On the other hand, I almost lost it about 147 times now. I mean, we pool players are trained to leave the chalk on the table. It's hard to remember to take it with you.

If you can make sure you don't lose it, Kamui chalk is definitely worth the money. With that said, I'm destined to lose it very very soon.

I'm not questioning its quality or the cost really, as I have no experience with it. What I just thought was pretty silly was the idea of putting it on and then covering it up with the cheap stuff. Or the idea that either chalk on thier own is indestinquishable but somehow a layered cake of chalks is a big improvement over either alone. But people do alot of odd things out there so whatever floats your boat.

:)

Layered tips?

Layered chalk on a layered tip on a laminated shaft of a laminated core cue.......with a big fat pin that reduces the joint face area.....

Then you put on a glove.........

And talk about the "feel of the hit". LMFAO! :rotflmao1:

Then of course the ever gaining popularity of the wrap-less cue....."'cause I wanna feel the hit"....... ....of my cue with the layered chalk on a layered tip of a laminated shaft of a laminated core cue with the big pin that reduces the joint face area......get that linen out of my way....I just can't feel through it....... LMAO

And people wonder why I am old school........ :)

I got a nice old piece of maple with a hard piece of leather on the end.....I put chalk on it...... :grin-square:

Mark my words....you will soon be able to buy layered chalk cubes. Oh the forum threads that will generate.........:D

You do realize that you are supposed to put the chalk on your tip right???

You must not chalk very often for a piece to last you that long with how much you play - but oh well.

Since the inception of the internet people have been using the YMMV acronym. I guess mine finally does.

I'm with ya on this, but have not tried it and have no comment to its performance. But, miscues are a ''tell'', that either I'm doing something wrong, the chalk is old and cakey, or its dried out too much (which is difficult to do, but it happens/sun?).
I wonder how good this chalk performs compared to Masters in VERY humid conditions?

When I'm playing well I never miscue with Any good name brand chalk.

Another thought, and I see this type of situation on other forums....there are so many people nowadays that think if you do ''just this'' it will be ''ALL BETTER" or it will Fix everything, when in fact one has to learn the hard way in life....there are no shortcuts to Real Improvement. It may be the Y generations or gamers way of thinking everything is just ''one click away'', and I can understand because I grew up (actually never did, just aged ;) in the 50's and we were into ''everything'' hands on'....and those were our teachers, not Google or another website.

By the way, I thought Peanut Butter was supposed to cost more, did the lemmings hear the call :))))))

Here's a Thread Title that gives me the heebeegeebees

What's the BEST this or that?

Hardwork and determination are the BEST for this or that.

Yes!

Durring practice, I don't chalk all that often (every 3 shots or so)
Durring play, I do chalk every stroke; sometimes more than once.

The trick to long life is to stroke the chalk cube over the tip while rotating the cue. In this way, you do not drill a hole in the center, but wear the cube away from the corners (in sort of a flower pattern.)

Since the inception of the internet people have been using the YMMV acronym.

You milage may vary, mine seems to have a long life.

Your practice is different than your play?

How's that workin' out for ya?

Just wondering.........
