......at age 58 1/2, I go and bowl my all-time best series ever, a 636. Now, I realize that averaging 212 for three games ain't all that great, but like pool, I also suck at bowling with a current 149 average (well, up until last night anyway).

Then, this morning, I get out of bed, piddle around for a few minutes, go to the pool table and rack a game of 9-ball the proceed to break-and-run the first rack (this is 8:30 in the morning).

Things are starting to get easier for me the older I get and that's kinda scary!!!

Feels good, don't it? I think as we get older and (really want to do it) we take our time to hit every ball perfectly. I know at 70 I get more enjoyment out of running a few racks of 9/10-ball in a row or running over 50 in 14.1. Now if I can ever remember where I left that chalk.

Nice 3 game average in bowling and on running a rack before coffee. Johnnyt

Even the Kamui chalk?

Congrats on such a performance

It's because you got your fears about 10-foot tables invading your local poolroom off your mind, and this weight has been lifted from your shoulders. :p

J/K! Seriously, what did you do different? I.e. what did you eat and drink the night before? Did you get more sleep? What different thought patterns did you have before going into bowling and playing pool?

I agree with JohnnyT that as we get older, our thought patterns change, and we have flashes of those much-younger times when we can completely focus, take our time, and execute. This is as compared to, say, five or ten years before, when we are caught up in "life" and letting it rush us along.

I'll be 46 in March (yeah yeah, go ahead and call me a youngin' ;) ), but I went through a time when, in my 20s, I was bowling and playing my absolute best in pool. I had eagle-eyes, a laser-straight stroke, and no fear -- of anyone or anything. Fast forward to my 30s, and I'm fully caught-up in the circle jerk of life, letting it rush me along like being caught in a river's whitewater. Then <poof!> something happens in my 40s, I let the frustrations of life's whitewaters go, and I do my own thing, at my own pace. Suddenly, flashes and glimpses of my old days are back. I'm playing better and enjoying it more now, even if work is still as busy as ever. I'm able to leave work issues at the door when I leave, and not think about them 24x7 like I did in my 30s. Work no longer rules my roost. I'm able to let things go, focus on my game, and really let my subconscious playing come out.

Glad to hear that you had such a great night bowling and pool session. I'll bet something about your mindset had a lot to do with this. You just need to find out what it was!

I really didn't do or eat anything out of the ordinary. I was up late the two previous nights because of pool leagues (1:30 and 1:00 a.m. respectively), but I've done that before and still bowled like crap on Wednesday night.

I cannot put a finger on it, but I was "in the zone" on the bowling lanes just like you get in a poolmatch from time to time. Focusing VERY well. I wish I could bottle that condition and keep it for the really big matches ;)!!!

Damn...looks like you are on a roll. Run out and buy a Lotto ticket while you are riding the high tide...then you can split the winnings with me for suggesting it. :)

Your first-game break and run made me smile. For whatever reason, whenever I go to play pool at Hawaiian Brian's each Sunday morning I do the same thing. I don't know why! I will go in, rack the balls, break, make a ball, and the table seems to be wide open and I will run them. THEN THE POOL GODS FROWN DOWN ON ME AND IT GOES DOWNHILL FROM THERE FOR THE REST OF MY PLAYING TIME! LOL!
