Before we turn our sights completely to the Super Billiards Expo Straight Pool Challenge put on by Fury and Charles Eames and Steve and Heather Kurtz, I would like to draw your attention to a little event we have planned that starts a week from this coming Sunday.

Bill Maropulos, Dana Stephenson, and myself have been trying to carry on the fine tradition started by Bob Jewett. With Bob's contributions and the contributions of known straight pool supporters like Stu Mattana, Rich Klein, Simonis Cloth, and just in the last few minutes, Jeff Mohl, and John Sunderland, we have been able to raise $7,500.00 in added money to this event. Our goal has always been to match the original added money of $10,000.00 that Bob had originally started with. We are going to change the format just a little and allow people to buy more than just one ticket this year in an attempt to generate prize money. I haven't done this before but I am going to throw this out to the AZB straight pool sub forum and see if anyone else would like to help support this event. Attached is some more information about the event and about the contributions. 100% of all the money is paid to the players.

We are talking with JR Calvert and Inside Pool about streaming some of the preliminaries and hope to have most of the event streamed and video'd. Thank you for your continued support of this great game.

I’m sure you have heard about the Straight Pool Challenge at Derby City that was run by Bob Jewett for its first four years. While not a straight pool tournament, per se, it gives great players an opportunity to play and great fans an opportunity to watch. The players are allowed to pay $100 and take 12 chances on the first four days. The three high runs for each of the first 4 days are paid $300, $200, and $100 respectively. They rack 14 balls and take the 15th ball in hand and cue ball in hand and see what they can do. The top eight runs of the three days then have a round robin tournament and all of the matches are recorded, some by Accu-Stats. We have had players like John Schmidt, Thorsten Hohmann, Ralph Eckert, Charlie Williams, Mika Immonen, Darren Appleton, Niels Feijen, Huijdi See, Danny Harriman and many others compete in the event and we have had many high runs in the 100s on tough Diamond tables.

I ask if you would be willing to make a donation towards this event. We have always had a prize fund of $10,000.00 added. Bob Jewett donated all the money for the first four years. Last year, he donated some money and I was able to obtain other donations from others to reach our $10,000.00 goal. This year, so far, Bob Jewett and Stu Mattana are again donating and Rich Klein, Simonis Cloth, and Jeff Mohl are new donors filling out our Golden Sponsor roster. The Silver Sponsor patrons include John Sunderland of James and Sons Jewelers in Chicago, Arnold Kupec, Stan Haines and Angel Levine. Ted Antle of Chicago has also promised to help as has James Franklin of AZB.

I am asking if any of the rest of our 14.1 clan on AZB would be willing to make a donation to the event. It starts on Sunday, January 22, 2012.

If you can make a donation money can be sent by check or money order to the following address or you can paypal to my account at gwtlaw@aol.com with a notation Derby City Straight Pool.

If not, thank you anyway for taking the time to read this and thanks for all you do for Straight Pool.

By the way, attached is a summary of last year’s event, along with links to videos of many of the runs and a few of the matches if you wanted to view some of them or if others in your leagues would like to look at them. Accustats did two of the matches and they are for sale at the Accustats site.

John Schmidt, who usually dominates the high run attempts, had an off year, running only 73. He did run a 149 in practice the day before the event started, but during the competition, he did not soar to his usual heights.

Danny Harriman showed up the last day and took all twelve of his attempts. He said he has only been playing three cushion billiards in the last year. His high run was a 72 http://vimeo.com/19853043 and he just missed beating our eighth seed, John Schmidt who had the 73.

Johnny Archer came up short with a 71.

Mika also came up a bit short with a 68.

If my calculations are correct, Darren won $3,800 and Alex won $2000 for a $100 entry fee. It's no wonder these guys love this event.

I'd love to help, but I've already given to the "Long Island" event. Let's hope 14.1 aficionados from all over the country support BOTH events.

Donation being sent this morning.

Got it. Thanks!

Gene: I understand. You gotta support your local guys. I am getting some fair support from my Chicago guys and of course, Bob Jewett, Stu Mattana and all the other big guns. I think we will get close to our number. Thanks.

As always, you are 100% correct. No wonder their eyes light up when they come into the room. If they can somehow manage a 100 ball run, history has shown they will at least make a $600 profit. Best bang for your buck at the Derby.

Did you know that the highly publicized banks portion of the tournament has the same added money as us? $10,000.00. The even bigger one pocket is only $15,000.00 added.

I am bumping this for those of you who did not hear our plea over the weekend. So far we have received one donation from our 14.1 comrades here on AZB. I know you guys like the videos we generate because I have seen the hits. Thank you for anything you can do.

J.R. Calvert announced on Facebook he will be streaming 14.1 and the Action Room. He also made this promo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PUdwcR7vAc&feature=uploademail

Thanks, Bob. I did mention in the initial post that we were discussing with JR the streaming. Exact details have yet to be worked out as to who is streaming what but between JR and Pat Fleming, we hope to get most of it out there. Once I have finalized with JR, Diamond, and Pat, we will let people know who is streaming what.

Thanks Dennis. I'd like to remind folks that should two streams be running at once -- just open another window and watch them both!!!!!

Just as an update, J.R. will have the Action Room which is near our Straight Pool Room. Since, presumably most of the action will be late, he will be available during the day for streaming of our preliminaries Sunday through Wednesday. I guess he will be able to sleep when the event is over.

We will have two tables in our room and with one in J.R.'s room, it will give us a chance to service more people. Last year it got crazy busy late the last day. Ralf Souquet showed up after midnight and was interested in trying, but it was too late.

Anyway, J.R. will welcome some of the attempts on his table to be live streamed. He also may hook into our cameras in the other room with firewire to allow him to stream a good run in our room, say, a Hohmann, Schmidt, Harriman, Appleton, Immonen, Feijen, or Maropulos. :)

When the matches start on Thursday, Pat Fleming will get first crack at them. Usually, the first day we have 4 matches and Pat might take 2 at the most. That leaves two for J.R.

After that, there will be 3 matches left and if Pat can handle them, he will take them; Otherwise J.R. will be ready to step to the plate.

I am attaching an updated sheet with updated sponsor info. Thanks to those who helped keep this alive.

You don't get it do you Bob !
I have been trying to tell you that the internet isn't good enough for 2 streams. It was tested last night and was .42 to .60 down at best. It maybe very hard to run only one stream !

Am I wasting my time again ? Probably.

Are you down at the Derby?

I was talking to Pat last week and he was worried about the bandwidth and was going to talk to Diamond. Was anything resolved or do we have a big problem if two different shows are being streamed out of the venue???

The operative word is "should" meaning "if" they are able to stream more then one ......!

You don't get it Gary. I have absolutely nothing to do with the actual streaming aspects --- I am not a broadcaster. I merely let people know when a broadcaster has confirmed a streaming and get the word out in an effort to promote it and in so doing our sport ... the "exact" way I have done for years to include those you were involved in. It's about promoting the sport via streams not about me knowing whether or not that it is possible ~~ the onus is on the broadcaster in that regard.

I received an email notifying me of this stream (see below) in the same fashion I have been notified about the ones you were involved in and relayed that information -- that's the Alpha and Omega of it. So, in order to keep you happy am I to reply to all emails/notifications asking broadcasters if he/she knows what they are doing before letting folks know of their "official announcement"?

Am I wasting my time notifying people of "confirmed" streams? No, not if I'm earnestly trying to promote our sport. Am I to put in a disclaimer when notifying folks ala ......"So-and-so will be attempting to stream such-and-such event providing he/she knows what they are doing and whether or not the venue has proper bandwidth"? I think not -- that would be ridiculous.

Derby update with Sunday results

High runs yesterday:
John Schmidt 127
Huidji See 84
Darren Appleton 51

Niels Feijen got a 113, but it was after his first four tries and does not qualify for the daily, although it does qualify for everything else. Darren also got an 84 towards the event.

We had 12 guys buy in yesterday. Ralf Souquet made a return to the event after a hiatus of a few years, but only managed a 43 on three attempts. A few guys that are doing well in banks are holding off for now. I expected Danny Harriman to attempt but not yet.

Sorry we are not getting much on the live stream yet. The action guys are sometimes holding down the room for looooong matches. Then sometimes we have dead time over in our room and some guys want to shoot in our room. Cleaner balls, cleaner tables, less interruption. We will keep trying to fit things in over there. Maybe Harriman today.

Thanks for the updates Dennis. I wish I could have made it to the event this year. I will be there next year.
