A friend in one of our leagues asked if I knew of a good video or book on straight pool safeties.

Any ideas?

I seem to remember a little bit in the Straight Pool Bible.

14.1 safeties

I think I've reviewed an entire DVD set on safety play by Allan Sand, Dennis. It definitely leaves no stone unturned. GF

Dennis,

You may want to touch base with Stu (sjm) he is a well know strategist when it comes to safety play !!!

George: Is this the one you mean? The Safety Toolbox CD-Rom

Safety Toolbox (CD-ROM)
By Allan Sand
Intelligent Shooter Series

One of the most fascinating aspects of the late and immortal Irving Crane is that his practice sessions used to include his playing himself safe for a full 30 minutes a day. Skim the rack, inspect for dead shots, play safe again. It must have paid dividends; of all his peers, and they included Greenleaf and Mosconi, he was universally acknowledged to be the premier defensive player. Allan Sand, the creator of the CD-ROM series, “Handbook of the Billiard Gods,” enthusiastically reviewed here a few years ago, is back to analyze the defensive aspects of pool. And what a thorough analysis it is, too: banking into safeties, blocking pockets, clusters, dead zones, those valuable “two-way” shots, and many, many other areas of defensive play. He begins with the theory that the purpose of safety play is to allow you to maintain control of the table, and commences from there. Once you glean Mr. Sand’s techniques, you’ll be forcing your opponents to work much, much harder, and you may win several matches out of their frustration alone. Because of Mr. Sand’s thoroughness, this instruction does seem to proceed slowly. But stay with it; none of us was meant to pocket balls accurately 100 percent of the time, nor to attain desirable position even if we do. This DVD will make you smarter all the rest of the time.

Thanks, Steve. I already sent him an email, as well as one to Mr. Jewett. I hope to be getting a little bit of a safety lesson from Stu at Derby.

Safeties

just ordered my copy...cant wait to see what good stuff I can incorporate into my game :)

I ordered the 5 pack of pdf's for only about $30.00. The safety one is not specifically geared to 14.1 but maybe the concepts will be useful nonetheless. George looked through it and endorsed it and since he mainly plays 14.1, I think there must be some good stuff there for us.

p.s. SJM says he will give me a safety lesson down in Derby and that is something I am really looking forward to.

lost my match last night soley due to my total lack of knowledge regarding safety play. when i got home last night i decided to ask the forum for help, as always, the forum has come thru again, this time without even asking! hurray for the forum! i look forward to the recommendations suggested.

Hey All,

i went back and skimmed through some of the literature that i have on 14.1 and i found that "Play Your Best Straight Pool" by Phil Capelle has several chapters on Safety and Defensive Play. I bookmarked it and will re-read it later on this evening so i can intergrate it into my weak safety game !!!

hope this helps

Play your best straight pool

Phil Capelle reminded me that he had a section on Safeties in Play your Best Straight Pool which I looked at on the ride down today.

Take a look.

As another reader pointed out, George Fels also covers the subject and his books should be examined for their sections on safety play.

I downloaded the Safety Toolbox this morning from Allan, who what very helpful. I have to say that I don't find the safety play very useful for straight pool. There are tons of good safety examples for 8 and 9 ball, but they really aren't much good for straight.

If you are the kind of person willing to spend $10 to learn one concept that will help your game (and I am), then this is worth the money. I haven't read through the book completely, but there is a lot on the mental game that is useful. Just don't buy the book expecting any safety strategies for straight pool.

Great thread. After reviewing my logs from Billiard Buddy, I see that I have been punished for poor safety play. I look forward to reviewing many of the items mentioned above in the weeks to come.

Great question Dennis, thanks for asking. Thanks to the rest of you for some great places to study safety info.
