I'm curious what people consider knocking action.

I believe a lot of people knock action just to feel important or like they are in "the know". PHDs. Pool Hall Detectives.

I will post my thoughts later.

I consider knocking to be when a third party not involved in the negotiation of a game comes in and makes a statement or association that negatively affects the game-making process. This could be any kind of declaration of one of the player's speed or past accomplishments, or even just acknowledging that the third party is familiar with one of the players.

Lets say you are considering the purchase of a product. You call a friend to ask what he thinks. Your friend doesn't own the product but is a knowledgeable person that you respect.

The only safe route for your friend is to suggest against the purchase. No way he or the relationship can be hurt that way. He knocks the product. (the safe route)

The best information is seeing for yourself what the product is all about and making a decision.

looks like Ray got his sale (action) knocked.

Happens all the time to everyone.

The great thing about my action is....you can go to Ustream and pull up numerous videos and get a "true" feel for how I play. Bad. :D

If this guy is really a friend, he's going to give you an honest opinion. I'd do more harm to a relationship bashing someone's action when it is unwarranted than I would giving an honest negative opinion. The main thing to let anyone know is what has already been expressed, that this is my experience, but try it for yourself, it may be what you're looking for. As we all know, no two of us are the same.

Does your friend have intimate knowledge of similar products ? Is your friend disclosing that they don't own the product ?
Is your friend 'knocking' the product, or simply suggesting (from his experience) a superior product ? And if that's the case, are the price points similar ?

A friend of mine once asked me what I thought about BRAND X shafts. I disclosed that I had never played with a BRAND X shaft, and that in my time perusing the pool forums, I hadn't read much regarding these shafts. When he mentioned the price, and that he would be buying this off of eBay, my suggestion to him was that for roughly an additional 10% of the price of a BRAND X shaft, he could purchase a BRAND Z shaft that A)had MANY in-depth reviews, B)many of our league playing friends owned BRAND Z, and C)he could buy one from the local poolroom.

I guess a lot of your dilemma hinges on if your friend is disclosing his knowledge and experience in regards to the type of product in question.

Hey Mickey!

I was just making the point that first hand knowledge is the only way to truly give an accurate opinion. Seeing for yourself is still the best way to make a decision.

Hope you're doing well!

So if I tell you that JoeyA plays too good for you to play him without weight, you are going to lose your money anyway? Same as if I tell you Johnny Archer plays good and you need lots of weight, are you going to play him and lose your money after you have been informed of how he plays? At the same time while you are being told about this, their action will be getting knocked! At least that is the way most people think! If you use your phone or go on the Internet about a player you can see how he/she plays if they are good players. I guess that knocks action too!!!

And you say you play bad, huh? HHmmmmm..... remains to be seen.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

Never mind.........

What you described in post #3 is not knocking action. Giving a friend a review of a product or advice on buying something is a friendly thing to do.

As far as action goes. Knocking is when someone thats is not involved, makes themselves involved and the end result is 'no action'.

If I'm making a game with someone and a friend or partner tells me I'm in a bad game, I don't consider this knocking as they are part of my team. But if a random dude got involved for or against me and killed the action, that would be knocking.

Honestly there could be a case made that streaming people playing pool knocks their action. They could play very well or even 'over their head' on a stream and kill their action.

I'm saying, I wanna watch them play, myself, and make a decision what I think the game is, not ask anyone's opinion. The last thing you wanna go into a match with is negative thoughts.

If my game is improving, the last thing I want is for people to tell me that I'm the same. I believe a lot of players think like this.

The stream is the most honest way to rank someone's game. By actually watching them play. It's the anti-knock.

Unless the people playing on the stream have a fix going on to make one player look worse than they are to get a better game or games with people who are checking out their speed on the streams. If they are doing that, it's good old fashioned hustling don't you think?
