Tips on ordering, buying a LONGER cue 60-62"

Hey guys and gals.

Considering ordering or buying a longer cue. I play with a 59" currently but very interested in having a 60-62" made up.

I have a few cuemakers in mind, talked to a few also.

I've been a cue nut for several years now, and broke college student, so I know about what I want and can afford, but any advice is valued.

Anyone play with a longer cue that isn't an even split? (30" butt, 31" shaft for example)

Before I had Larry Vigus (username 63Kcode on this site) make me a 30" butt, I was playing with a 31" Jacoby with either a 29" 314 or a 30" OB Classic. So in essence, I was playing with either a 60" or 61" cue. I never noticed any problems/issues with balance. In fact the 31" Jacoby/29" 314 has darn near the exact same balance point as does my 30" Vigus/30" OB Classic. If you already have a 30" or longer shaft, contact Larry on this site. I bet he'd make you a GREAT deal on a longer butt. He does excellent work too, with a keen eye for detail/craftmanship.

Haha That I did. Hope you are enjoying it. Just looking for something simpler.

I'm big on wood to wood joints, big pins. I had thought about talking to Jeff Olney (in my mind one of the best cue-makers currently building cues) but I know his wait is forever long right now.

Maybe I could just cut my arms off shorter lol.
 
The value of having a longer cue with a standard length shaft is that you can more easily find new and used shafts down the road, without having to special order longer ones. Other than that, it's what you're used to or prefer. I always kept the length equal between the shaft and butt ends, the balance seemed the same to me; when I put a 30" shaft on my 29" Joss or Schon, it definitely throws the balance point forward...but not a horrible thing.
 
you can have a shaft made longer to put on any cue you want. Judd does it all the time. Efren's cue is 60 in

I toyed around with this as well and had a 32" butt built.
One thing I would point out is to look at is the diameter of the butt.
Unless you are breaking with a wide butt it can be difficult to adjust to.
Also the wider it is at the cap end, the heavier the cue/butt will be. You will get comfortable with the weight in time. Likely you will be looking at 20oz or more.

I would probably recommend that if at all possible you try to keep the the shaft within 1" of the butt. You are better off having a longer shaft than a longer butt. It will keep the balance of the cue more forward.

I will likely be replacing my 32" butt with a 31" butt and will keep it slim at ?? 1.25" in diameter.

I would also suggest that you maybe you get Schmelke to make you a cutom butt. I say Schmelke because they will make it to your exact specs.
That will run you maybe $150.00.
Small price to pay before you drop $500-$1,000 and realize it is not the right fit for you.
 
I have made 61" cues with a 30" shaft and a 31" butt. When I couldn't get shafts longer than 30". Now I make them 30.5 an 30.5". I don't think anyone will notice the difference. A 30" butt with a 31" shaft will fit most cases better.

This only happens when the cuemaker did not re-set his taper bar to accommodate the extra length. Done correctly, the butt diameter for any length is as normal.

I wonder why people often think this? I have a 32" butt I made, a very normal sneaky pete, E.I. Rosewood into maple, which comes in at 18.4. This is normal. With a 29" shaft, it is very nicely forward balanced.

This is not correct. With a shorter shaft, or a longer butt, there will be more weight on the front. Drag out the scale and try it. It may be counter-intuitive but it's so.

Long cue

I have a Schon STL 18 that I had custom made to 60", shaft and but are 30", also have OB shaft that is 30" to go with it, cue was ordered in May, have used very little, went back to Huebler that I have had since 1986, Have $1400 invested, will sell for fair price, make offer, pics attached, any questions please message me

Try Lee Peppers

Lee is currently building me a 60in cue. His cues hit good and can make you a cue as detailed or plain as you like.

Mine is 4 points, 2 veneers (my choice) with a few inlays.

Check him out. He posts on here (LPCustom)

JMD.... I thought Lee stopped making cues. Rumor was that he wasn't taking any new orders?

He's on my list of guys to consider. I've had several Olney's but jeff has just a long wait currently and I don't know if I could wait lol.
