Carom Table Cushion Questions

I have a Soren Sogaard Billiard table. The installed cushions are no. 79 profile. The cushions have been replaced at some point (don't know when), as the corners do not have the perfect factory 45 deg mitre. The table plays pretty true, but a little slow with one laminate thickness for a shim. The shim was placed to eliminate hopping, which was quite severe without shimming. However, every shot you can hear a thump or thud sound, even at very slow speed. Any ideas what could be causing the thumping? Is it possible to use P37 rubber in the place of the 79 without making new rail liners?

thanks,

Yes, the liners are the same, P 79 was a custom replacement cushion from Artemis for Sogaards. Kleber p37 is the best option IMO.

Thanks Jay. Any thoughts on the thumping noise?

Loose rail bolts or cushions un-glued, if it's kind of a clapping/thud sound, the sound can also be caused by the rails not being bolted down flat to the slate...as in sitting on top of a shim, giving you a hollow sound to the banks.

Bolts definetly are not loose, they are good and tight. Jay just put the cloth on like 7 weeks ago, I didn't notice any delaminating between rail and cushions either (and I'm sure Jay would have noticed). The shims are cut to give max width of contact. In other words without the shims there is exactly the same contact between rail and slate. There's only the holes for bolts to go through (Jays invention and they work great) The thing that's crazy is you can hear the thump even at slower roll. Anymore suggestions?

Well then, you had the right person, Jay...working on your table, so all I can say is...I'd have to be standing next to your table to figure out what the sound...sounds like. But what ever it is, I'm sure Jay will figure it out just as well.

Jamie,

Three possible explanations.

1, The liners are very slightly loose from the rail caps.

2, The flat shims used to get rid of the hop are sliding, fractionally under impact from the balls.

3, The P79 rubber is was not properly glued to the liners when it was replaced. To be honest, I wasn't impressed with any of the work done by the previous mechanic when he replaced the cushions. You know it's not correct when you have to shim rails that have new rubber on them.

I'll be heading your way in the next 4-6 weeks and I'll check it out.

Jay
