Question on storing wood

Working with a great cuemaker right now, I certainly commend his patience :D

One day I will stop bothering him and be building on my own. As for now I have no equipment, but have been stocking up on wood every time I get a few extra bucks. Recently bought 25 squares, they came shipped in a cardboard shipping box, perfect fit......

So that had me thinking, & was wanting to get some different opinions & learn some things from all of you that have been working & storing wood for years......when storing wood, would it be ok to leave it in the box it is shipped in or would it be best to take it out & put it on shelving?

Also lets say I have a 36" piece of wood & only 24" shelves, is it bad to leave the extra length hanging off, will it allow the wood to be more susceptible to warpage?

Thanks to all that take the time to answer, I am about to start building shelving for storing stock & really only want to do it once!!

You should not leave it in the box, is it waxed? If so still needs air to age properly. Any wood you purchase should be either hung straight up and down or stored on shelves that will support its entire length, I would not recommend letting it over hang the edge.

Make sure where ever you store your wood, that it is dry, not near a heat source and that it has good air circulation. The air circulation will allow the wood to acclimatize to your location and it will allow the wood dry naturally without Checking or cracks.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply Craig

The wood I have gotten so far is not waxed. I will be storing it in my garage nowhere near a heat source so Im ok there. I was gonna set up some of that industrial shelving but cant find any 36" shelves, or dont want to pay for it if I do, those units get crazy expensive. So Im going to build 18", 24", & 36" shelving using 1x2's as the shelf part with spacing in between each "slat" so it should have plenty of airflow all around it.

The wire shelves work great. You can just screw them right to the wall.

Where did you find some 36" deep, the shelving units I find that are 36" are like $700

The ones I have or 12" deep. Like Paul said turn your wood sideways. Plus you can hang your shaft wood off of them too. The wire shelving on the wall keeps floor space open. I got the ideal from Larry aka 63Kcode.
