Smoking at tournament matches

i smoke sometimes and if i thought my smoking was bothering a non smoker,i would not smoke around him! it would be rude, classless and etc to continue to so...my opinion

If a person six or more feet from you lighting a cigarette legitamitly throws you off you need to drop the aiming systems and start taking focus lessons. And another thing you keep spouting "only during tournaments", in a establishment that is probably smoking any other day.

Not really, it's more about their gesticulations but more importantly, when that cigarette just sits in the ashtray that is 12" away from where you sit and the the noxious fumes start wafting into your eyes. That's really what bothers me the most but I could stand some improvement in focusing too. :p I've already learned how to use the best aiming systems out there. :D

I didn't quite understand your last sentence but if you mean that pool rooms have pool tournaments practically every day, I don't get that either.

But just so you understand, I am talking about the players not smoking during tournament match play. That doesn't have anything to do with them smoking during the tournament.

The Joss tour prohibits smoking during one's match because smoking robs the tournament of valuable time. I think that's as good a reason as any for prohibiting smoking while you're playing.

You guys are right. Smoking should be banned because it's a health risk and it smells bad. You know what else is a health risk and smells bad? Bacon. I'm sick and tired of all these bacon eaters imposing their will upon non-bacon eaters. It's too bad the bacon farmers, with all their bacon money, lobby against bacon bans. Don't even get me started on alcohol.

Lol...you guys are ridiculous. What makes you think you are entitled to tell somebody else what he can or can't do with his property? Smokers and non-smokers have the same rights. You can choose to smoke, or you can choose to not smoke. Just like you can choose to gamble, or you can choose to not gamble. Just like you can choose to smoke weed, or you can choose to not smoke weed--oh wait, a bunch of whining idiots already made that last decision for you.

I totally agree with you on this. If some on here do not want to be around smoke in tournaments, then by all means stay away from them. I am certain there are venues where smoking is prohibited, go there. Leave the smokers the h$$$ alone

I think for some it is a sharking move, for others it is an unconscious thing associated with an addictive habit, and for others who don't care, just an inconsiderate act. I think it should be treated like being harassed at work, the offendee should have to say something to the offender, and if the behavior doesn't stop, action (penalties, forfeit, etc.) should follow.

I think it is no different than the cell phone issue.

Smoking hurts my eyes during a tournament. The other guy might wave his cigarette in front of me and distract me. He’s blowing smoke my way. He gets to take a smoke break.

Wah.

Wah.

Wah.

I am a non-smoker -- but like most pool players over drinking age I cut my teeth in smokey pool rooms -- sometimes with the smoke so thick it looked like San Francisco at dawn with the fog rolling in. Go sing, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” somewhere else.

Yes, the other guy might take a drag, light one up, and even, God forbid, blow smoke your way. Good grief, am I the only one that grew up playing guys that played with cigarettes hanging from their lips, dropping ashes everywhere, or even laying their cigarettes on the rail? Smoke around a pool table?! lol. Shocked! Shocked, I say! For better or worse, cigarette smoke still happens at this game, as it has for decades. Eventually that will change but for now: it’s pool. Stop making excuses. Stop whining. Man up. Learn to deal with it.

And if it’s not cigarettes, I guarantee you it’s going to be something else you'll use as an excuse for playing poorly, losing, or just plain doggin’ it at the most recent tournament.

I agree with you SnapShot. I have weened myself down to a few smokes a day now. I walk a lot at work and feeling great.

I still hate when people blow smoke in my face. If I was playing and someone were to waft smoke over my way when I was shooting, I'd put a quick stop to it.

Cell phones are another irritant. Twice, friends have called and asked me to meet them at the hall for a few games. These guys spend more time text messaging than they do playing. I finally asked the one guy if he came out to shoot pool or play on his phone.

I've always liked the bumper sticker that read. "Would you drive better with that cell phone in your A ss".

Hi Lou! I see you still have me on ignore. :p:p:p :D:D:D

Actually, I played some of the best pool of my life in this tournament and beat some really good players; some of them, I beat SEVERELY, others I squeaked by and a couple just played better than me. Smoking had nothing to do with the outcome of any of my matches.

So you just got it wrong, AGAIN. ;-)

I could say it makes me wonder but that would be silly

I have known many smokers that won't smoke in their own house and I can't remember any smoker that I have known in the last decade or so that didn't go to great efforts to prevent their young children and grandchildren from being exposed to this "harmless" secondhand smoke.

I could say it makes me wonder why the smokers think it is fine to make other people in confined areas put up with their smoke but that would be silly. It is obviously a case of mind over matter. They don't mind because the nonsmokers don't matter to them.

Bit of Bacon

Ray

Oh man. Bacon sandwiches any time of the day. If I'm going to clog my arteries, Bacon is going to be responsible. How does one have a fresh BLT without it? Its just a vegan LT after that.

Go sit in the corner, Now!

People sharking with lighters ? Cmon, seriously. Where does it end? Shall we have a big black box that you have to step into when it's not your shot ? Yet another step on the road to the clean-room spot-shot tournaments stevie moore longs for.

And for those on the money/tobacco lobby kick, let's not forget one simple fact. The lawyers for the health care insurers beat out the lawyers for the tobacco companies fair and square. Neither side gave a rats-sphincter about civil liberties or the constitution or the common man, just profits.

Being a smoker, I've had to fade not being able to smoke at tournaments for years now. I respect that people need clean air, and I am old enough to have been on a plane flight where smoking was still legal, yet I could not bring myself to smoke. Just did not seem right.

Joey, I love 'ya man, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to tie smoking to sharking.

Oh, and I'll bet good money, people were smoking up a storm watching Mosconi run 526.

They have the E-cigaretts now, so you can smoke, getting your nicatine, and the oral fix, but not have smoke bellowing out bothering the people around you. Problem solved.

This really isn't a battle of smokers vs. non-smokers. It's about liberty and the fact that some people want to infringe my rights, via government. Even if the pool room in question hung signs warning about "toxic air," someone would still be b1tching...in fact, the complaints would be worse.

JoeyA...
You KNEW people were smoking. You KNEW it was a health risk. You KNEW you'd smell like an ashtray. But you played the tournament anyway??? Obviously, the incentives in this tournament were worth the discomfort of smokers. And if you have some regrets, then don't do it next time. So kindly, STFU and make better decisions next time.

You are more than welcome to play pool in a non-smoking environment. Buy yourself a table and put it in the basement. But if another person allows you to use his stuff, in his room, you aren't entitled to anything.

Oh and BTW, YOU and only you are responsible for your health. Do not blame a smokey poolroom for your smoker's cough. Nobody forced you to stay.

I agree with that. Which is why I feel that pool room owners should post a sign - "Warning - poisonous air inside." That will serve as sufficient and fair warning to anyone entering the building.

By the same token there should be no standards in place for the kitchen so that the food handling could be as dangerous as the owner wants.

Furthermore there should be no building codes whatsoever so that the owner can make it as unsafe as he dares to.

Lastly if the owner wants to have a dripping water pipe feeding a colony of dangerous mold spores that flow through central air then that should be his right to do so over his property. The owner of a business has no legal obligation to provide a safe environment for his patrons. The basic motivation to provide a safe space is continued business right.

Basically enter this building and eat this food and breath this air at your own risk.

Does that about sum it up?

Actually, yes!! Of course, your hypothetical pool room will probably not stay in business very long.

I moved from a state with all indoor smoking banned... to one that does not. It fυcking sucks. I didn't really appreciate how lucky I was. Now I come home with burning eyes and throat + clothes that smelled like ass.

A lot of us think nothing of spending 5+ hours a night at the pool hall.
5 hours of being drenched in smoke basically = I'm a smoker, even though I never lit up in my life.

My clothes smell like a smoker's, I can't even keep them in the room. My sheets smell like a smoker's. My hair traps it, so of course my pillow smells... to the point where if I'm lying on my side for a few minutes, I need to roll onto my back because I can't stand having my nose just inches from it. My friends and family have commented when I walk in the door, they can smell it on me from ten feet away. I don't really feel like a 3 am shower but I'm forced to have one to get it off me.

Basically it's like being sprayed by a skunk.

I'm not even worried about cancer or whatever, though I do cough up shít in the morning just like a real live professional smoker. And there will always be inconsiderate people who shark you or make you wait. It's mostly the smell. I guess those who are used to it don't think it's that bad, just like someone who lives on a farm his whole life eventually gets used to the aroma of cow patties. But we'd ask a guy who smelled of manure to leave the pool hall.

As for the bacon analogy:
The pool hall where I grew up couldn't put in a deep fat fryer because he didn't have the money to arrange for a proper ventilation system. But somehow you're allowed to fill the air with carcinogenic ash? Go ahead and ban both bacon and smoking at the pool room, I didn't come there for a damned BLT or a nic fix.

I really don't care what people want to eat, drink, smoke, etc. This isn't a moral crusade. It's just asking people to have common courtesy and not stink in public. And not to spray me with that stink. That's not unreasonable.

imho you are completely out of line here...

all of us know [as well you should], JoeyA

he is what a yankee like me calls a southern gentleman.

fair.. square.. and straight.. as they come, as a man can be

while i may not agree with him, he has a right to call into question this smoking situation, as do many fine other pool players

without ridicule or your stfu comment. that for sure is not tolerable around here

let's just voice our opinions, pool brother to pool brother

i think you owe all of us an apology

best,
smokey

adding: liberty only goes so far, but decency should always prevail [imo]
