im a smoker but during matches i vote for NO.
i take a chewing gum during matches cause the cigarette would cost me concentration so i focus on the match.

I've heard of some of the best players in the world that are still smokers and still playing really well......

Anyway, I'm sympathetic to their need to get a fix, I just don't want their smoking during a match to interfere with my attempt to play a decent game of pool.

Joey old friend,

It is NOT 'smoke' that is keeping you from playing 'decent' pool..Its YOUR OWN hopeless addiction to "Aiming Systems" :p :p :p

If you're going to smoke a cigarette during play, don't ***** when I light up my big fat smelly smokey cigar, like a lot of cigarette smokers do (believe it or not). Now you know what the non-smokers feel like when you smoke a cigarette around them. :D

Let me start by saying that I quit smoking about 8 years ago for my health and am happy that I have. It is bad for ones health. Quitting was one of the hardest things I've ever done. Any one whom has ever smoked can attest to this.

As every pool player knows, pool is a pressure game. For smokers, the more pressure the more they need a cigarette or some other means to calm the pressure.

Those that don't smoke are lucky as they don't need a cigarette to calm their nerves as smokers do.

Dick

Congrats, Dick, on quitting. I quit a little over 3 years ago and it's the greatest gift I could have ever given to myself.
A little known fact on stress and smoking that I learned along my quit was, it's not that smoking relieves stress, it's that stress depletes the body of nicotine and puts you into a nic fit. Same as alcohol. Depletes the body of nicotine and makes you want to smoke more. It's why when I was drinking I would go through twice as many as normal.

Probabaly TMI for this thread but I found it interesting and helpful when I quit. Knowledge is power.

As to the subject here. I hate it when smoking is allowed inside and did when I was a smoker. However, I don't ***** about it when it is and still play in some private rooms that allow it. I don't like it but i respect the fact that it's the owners right to keep it or ban it. If it gets too bad I just leave.

I quit smoking 9 years ago, because it was a live or die situation. Had to go from 2 1/2 packs a day to zero overnight. Most of the time I can't stand to be around cigarette smoke anymore, but occasional the smell still makes me crave one. But I have never *****ed at a person for smoking, because I know how many time I tried to quit without success and really do feel it's as addictive as crack. Also I think it is the owners complete right to choose what they want to allow and I would just choose to go elsewhere.

Don't try and throw a wet blanket on this fine thread, you aiming system hater! :p:p:p

I'm personally against smoking in indoor public places, period.

That said, if it is legal to smoke in an establishment, then I don't see why it should be ceased for a tournament. Its either smoking or not smoking. Its not: "Oh, we are having a tournament today, so you can't smoke like you can every other day we are open." You can't have your cake and eat it too...

We hav No Smoking in side , but the smokers go out side , and you have to waite up to 20 for them to return . Last time I went to that turnament , I gave broke the cue down and walked out . Jim

I found the same thing. It was funny as hell....a guy walking around the table sizing up the shot smoking a ciggy creating a fog, and when I light up the stogie, he is crying a river. I don't miss the cigarettes, but I sure as hell miss a good $10-20 cigar (I quit not long ago and know if I pick up the stogies, the other is sure to follow soon).

Back to the subject: If the vetillation is excellent where the smoke is immediately sucked up and out, and no one is allowed to smoke while at the table, no problem. I can live with that easily.

If the ventillation is terrible, and you cannot see the guy at the next table, then yea, I have a real problem with that for sure.

Even when I smoked, I hated places where the smoke was so heavy as soon as you pulled your shirt over your head to undress at home after a night of playing, you wanted to puke from the smell of the shirt.

I have smoked for over 50 years. Most of my friends have smoked for about this length of time. What do I do when smoking is not allowed? I don’t go there, simple as that. I seldom eat out because restaurants are uncomfortable. I do not go to pool rooms where I cannot smoke. If I do go to one now and again, I do not stay long. No point in going where I am not wanted. When new acquaintances complain about smoking I avoid them in the future.

Smoking is not allowed in our on site pool room and I usually play in the evenings and smoke just outside the door when I want to. Some of the players have asked why I no longer play in the daily tournaments and I just make some lame excuse. Actually, I do not like being around anti-smoking zelots.

Respectfully, second hand smoke is a carcinogen. I wouldn't even call them anti smoking zealots, i'd call them anti-cancer-on-self zealots. I have yet to hear the reason why anybody feels they can spew a carcinogen into other people's vicinity. Other than the fact that is has been and is legal, do you have an answer??

Why do you feel you can spew a carcinogen into other people's vicinity? I honestly want to hear answers to this, as I think it is at the root of the real problem here. That is, just because things are legal doesn't mean you should feel comfortable doing them.

I think it can be pared down to this:

If you smoke, that is a choice you make and are certainly entitled to do it.

If you do not smoke, that is also a choice so why should anyone be allowed to force you to, by way of their 2nd hand smoke?

When playing in a tourney, I would never have a problem with my opponent taking their allotted break time to grab a cigarette rather than taking a bathroom break. As long as it takes the same time, who cares?

I made the decision to quit 15 years ago after smoking for 20 years. It seems like a basic courtesy that no one should want to impose on my choice to not breathe smoke.

Is it a big deal to smokers to go outside for their smoke breaks? Maybe some of the smokers can chime in. I'm really curious about this; do you all feel like it's an inconvenience to go out for a cig? Or is it really more enjoyable to be able to smoke while playing? Not being a wise guy here, am really interested to know about this.

I am in no way a smoke nazi - some of my best friends are smokers...

And FWIW, I sure do love that ashtray option they had for the old Gold Crowns. Would love to have them on my GC - for the novelty.

Green rep to schmizz for his analogy over how cigarette smokers might feel if their opponents pulled out their "big fat smelly smokey cigars" and started puffing away.

Best,
Brian kc

I hope this clears things up.

The petition has nothing to do with ceasing smoking for a tournament.

The petition ONLY seeks to eliminate smoking DURING A POOL MATCH and only between competitors.

The purpose of the ban is to eliminate the distraction of smoke and smoking during the pool match, NOTHING MORE.

The Joss Tour, arguably one of the most successful pool tournament tours IN THE COUNTRY, does not allow smoke breaks DURING THE MATCH. They have been doing this for quite some time and the smokers are still playing in the tournaments.

One of the most important reasons that the Joss Tour has for a ban on smoking DURING A TOURNAMENT MATCH is the amount of TIME that smoking robs the tournament of.

Somehow, the Joss Tour continues to be one of the most successful and the smokers continue to play and smoke before and after their match NOT DURING THEIR MATCH.

Personally speaking, I empathize with the smokers more so than most would think and would find it next to impossible to complain about a person took a smoke break instead of a bathroom break. We all have our special needs.:)

I hope that if you have not voted already, you will do so at your earliest convenience regardless of which side of the fence you are on.

Keep in mind, that this no smoking "rule" would only be in effect for the competing players and ONLY DURING THEIR MATCH.

This doesn't mean that they can't smoke before or after their match and it doesn't mean that the sweaters can't smoke (IF ALLOWED BY LAW).

Thanks for voting no matter what side of the fence you are on.

Well, if the point is that the smoke takes away from the top game of the non-smoker, then why limit it to players? The smoke from the railbirds does the same. The smoke from the bangers that don't even know there is a champion playing next to them does the same. And why limit it to tournaments? What about gambling? Or even practicing? If the smoke takes away from the non-smoker's game during tournaments, it will do the same during gambling and practice.

Don't get me wrong, as I said I wish smoking was banned in ALL indoor public places, cause I personally hate it. I'm even considering buying a table for my apartment cause every room near me is smoking and I hate it. I DONT have a choice to go to a non-smoking facitlity. But I just don't see the validity in limiting it for just a tournament, by just the people shooting the matches.

We each have our own opinions, and that's part of the fun:)

NO! You are mistaken about what is more distracting. The smoke from the spectators is not nearly as distracting. Yes, the health risks are there but the distraction of a cigarette smoldering in an ashtray less than two feet from your face or you at the table, facing an opponent in his chair with a cigarette in his hand, making out like he's Mick Jagger in concert is far greater than some spectators toking it out dozens of feet away.
