Buddy Hall gave up more weight than anyone! 1-9, the break, and the first shot!

dang, I think I ignored that first shot bit because it was so insane I couldn't even see it. That makes all the difference in the world. If the player doesn't know how to take advantage of it with the right break Buddy might still win 1 out of 5 sets...wow, crazy.

Hey Jesse,
You are a Bad Man!!! I love your videos....

Well, I don't know about any of that.

But I do know that Varner came to St. Louis for a couple of years, maybe back in the early 2000's, and gave up such humoungous spots that Buddy declared a few year later, when he was trying to match up here locally, that Nick had ruined St. Louis for any other player passing through -- since all the locals had seen with their own peepers just how much Nick (or any other top pro) could give up to the shortstops and still get the cheese.

Lou Figueroa
it's more than you
would think ;-)

LF,
I saw Nick play some One Pocket against a very good player, offering "8 and out or no count." Nick had to run eight and out or spot back any balls he had made during his inning. He won 3 of the 4 games I observed. Unbelieveable really, considering Nick hadn't played competitively for several years. Oh and by the way, Nick started most of his runs with a bank or two or three - HE CAN BANK!!!

Hello Willie,
I know what you mean. Nick was with Buddy when they came to Buffalo's Billiards, the worlds pool hall last year. Willie, it was awesome the things they did!!! Nick beat up on people at their own games!!! I never saw Nick play 10 ball before, but he ran out every game almost! And Buddy will tell you where the cue will be after every shot and make the ball and the cue will be where he said or it is your shot!!!! Thanks Willie.

...And Buddy and Nick are very nice and decent gentlemen. Anyone who's met either of them in person can tell you.

One thing is--and I'm not doubting that Buddy Hall gave such a huge spot--is you have to consider the stakes. Maybe that spot is for $50 a rack, and then after a few racks it will be changed to $500 a rack and the break only? Break only and all 9 is a common pro hustle...

...And how's this for a "spot"? They say Mosconi would bet any amount he could run 100 at Straight Pool without touching a rail once!

...And try this sometime--offer the 8-ball in 9-Ball with "If you make the 8-ball, we will at least draw the match; unless you also can the 9-, then you win, of course..." The suckers will run most, not all, the table for you! :)

Lock...I've seen a lot of ridiculous weight given up.
Those spots are usually indicative of how horrible the other player is, not
how good the player is who's giving the weight.

I am most impressed about Buddy Hall because he gave WORLD CHAMPIONS
WEIGHT....and gave Efren his biggest loss on American soil playing even.

regards
double hemlock..<..who knows about giving up serious weight

double hemlock,
You are right, Efren did get destroyed by Buddy Hall! And people want to make excuses about the match. Efren even said he had never been beaten lick that before!!! Thanks DH.

Just remember who was racking the balls ...Buddy Hall !....I played him with the call 7- 8 - and the break in the 70s ...If you dont break and run out you lose LOL...We played two foul also ...How do you like rolling out and Buddy say " go ahead "...Or trying to shot one of his roll outs ...It might not be as easy as it sounds to play him with a big spot ,,,,,

And he had to shoot the 9 straight in the side, either side, no banking it or kicking it! I just got off of the phone with Buddy Hall a few minutes ago. I told him about me giving up the blue thru and the break, I asked him what was the most weight he ever gave up! He said I could post this too! This happened in Oklahoma City. Buddy Hall won the match! Man now that had to be some good shooting pool going on there!!!!!!

Buddy told me to tell everyone on AZB he was doing much better and he thanked all for their support during his illness!

I take it his opponent was blind in one eye couldn't see out of the other., was a quadraplegic, deaf mute who couldn't speak english!. The rifleman was certainly one of the best players of his day. Not withstanding that fact what is descraibed here is not so much a display of Buddy's excellent play but an utter failure of his opponent. Nobody who has ever played the game is supposed to be able to give up that kind of a moronic spot and not be just absolutely descimated. Anyone who recieves such a stupendous spot who does not obliterate his opponent regardless of who they are should write a will before they take a one way ticket to San Francisco, get a cab to the Golden Gate bridge, climb to the top and do a full gainer!!! :p

Why shame on you Billy Bones,
You tell me what you need from Buddy Hall and I will tell him and see what happens!!! The man is not the 12 time world champion for nothing!!! Read some of the post in this thread! Thanks Billy.

I saw it in a couple of books where some one hole player (Jersey Red)? gave a spot where no balls he made in his hole counted-only the ones you made in his hole counted.

That's not as big a spot as it sounds. Just play ultra conservative and wedge all the balls on your hole.

The other night playing a good player who hangs out here on AZB I was making 2-3 balls a game for him because of this. He was great at hanging up the balls and leaving me no option but to make them for him.

I'd say that the story about Mosconi betting that is a myth.

I noticed this post because of JB.

If I could coach the guy getting the spot...Red would have to quit.
I would like to make a side-bet IF I win all stale-mates.

I would instruct the guy to leave the balls near Red's hole alone....
...the guy getting the spot may end up owing 4 million balls....
..but Red can't win the game.

I have given some serious weight to poor players....but I don't like
making games where the guy has to be a moron for me to win.

That won't work because Red could have shot balls into his hole to clear the pocket.

And if the game is stalemated then Red wins because he is out no money.

So he can either lose nothing or make money but not lose.

Have a little humor Lock. The way I read the described spot it was rediculous. If I have some misunderstanding about that then please clarify. I see it as he is giving up the whole rack, who gets the break and first shot? Buddy or the opponent? It's a one line statement in the first thread. He's giving up the 1-9, the break and the first shot. The way I read the spot I would take it from anyone who has ever played. Now I have been out of the loop for 9 years perhaps I don't percieve the spot correctly. As far as Buddy Hall is concerned I gave him his due respect in my post. If the spot was what I thought it was then my post was as rediculous as the spot. It was humor, not disrespect.

Hey Billy,
I meant no harm. Just having a little fun with you is all. I asked Buddy several times to be sure of the spot. You take care. Thanks for your input.

A note about Buddy

Besides carrying weight better than Charles Atlas, Buddy had a sense of humor about it. When he was pounding on me in Shreveport, with the six and nine, (it wouldn't have mattered what he gave me. The cat never missed). I asked him "Buddy, how do you shoot so easy with so much accuracy?" He smiled and said "Alfie, that's because I'm a good player." I said " Dammit! I didn't ask you 'why'? I asked you 'how"?
Keep it nice. Alfie

I still don't see how its possible. If I get to break, I get the first shot and I get the 1out... I'm gonna cut break my way to every penny they got.

If its a super tight table, sign me up to try anyone like that too.

That's ridiculous. Red can't win. All you have to do is foul when you make his balls and he stays on 0 forever. At the very worst, it's a stalemate.

oops, then yeah you could win on stalemates. Never saw a stalemate in one pocket.
