On business in DC. Where do you play?

Guys where is the best place to play in the dc area?

There aren't "real" pool rooms in D.C. proper. Most of them have more of a bar-like atmosphere with tables that are not well maintained, loud music, video games, with pool not being the main course, so to speak.

If you have transportation, there are a few pool rooms in the suburbs of Virginia that may be more your cup of tea, but on Friday afternoon, be prepared for gridlock traffic that could have you sitting in your car for 3 hours to drive 10 miles. No, this is not an exaggeration.

There's a few pool rooms in suburban Maryland, but, again, these are more bar-like atmosphere settings.

If you're looking for an action kind of room or a serious pool room where pool is the main course, none exists in D.C., sad to say.

in DC

I always enjoyed hanging out at Bedrock Billiards up in the Adams Morgan area of NW DC. As Jam stated, it's a bar but they do have some really nice Gold Crowns. Very well taken care of, great people, and even some solid players there. They make a pretty darn good drink too!

Not true. Buffalo Billiards has nice 4.5x9 tables and is in the heart of DC, in a nice area.

Do you think that's more of a bar or a pool room? I call it a bar.

My definition of a pool room differs than most. Maybe it's because I've seen the best and watched them fade into the sunset. They are nonexistent in the D.C. area. Having lived here my entire life, being involved in pool since I was a young tween, I can say that with surety.

I don't call a bar with loud music and alcohol a "pool room."

Now, if somebody wants to listen to loud jukebox music, drink alcohol, watch sports on flatscreen TVs on the walls, and play pool in tight quarters, then, yes, I agree, Buffalo Billiards has nice 4.5X9 tables in the heart of D.C. Most serious-minded pool players have difficulty concentrating on their shot-making strategies when the noise is so loud in the pool room that they have trouble communicating with whoever they are with. Yes, this place is a bar. Make no mistake about it. If you like bars with good tables, then it's the place to go.

Also, one more thing, the place has kind of an odor, like vomit or smelly feet.

It is in a nice area but that doesn't make it nice. I used to live in Dupont Circle, but what JAM said IS true. The tables are not maintained, the cues are warped and sticky. The place has a depressing atmosphere and smell. Also, the tables are not 9' (they are the oversized 8' variety).

I can see you know the place! ;)

He probably won't feel like driving up to Frederick. :p

I can attest that Beetle's house is way better than any poolroom. Might be worth the cab fare!

Pool party at Beetle's house on Sunday, 4.1.12. All are invited.

I like it!!!! I'd have to step back and let the real players play. I'm great at fetching beers and mixing drinks, though!

Like you have ever played there. I have played there. The tables (15 of them - see the website) are 4.5x9. There is no freakn thing as an oversized 8 foot table. If 8 foot tables seem big to you, then they are a commercial brand, not the house brand. House brands are tinier. True however that the tables are not very well maintained because the cloth was a little worn. But if you are in DC looking for a pool hall, this should fit the ticket.

And what pool hall do you know has super house cues? When I played there I found a good house cue - not many albeit. It didn't stink. The food was good etc. Very enjoyable.

Have any of you guys played there even I might ask?

You sound cranky and irritable today.

Has the Magic Rack still got you down?

Don't believe everything you read in the internet.

Why not go there and measure them? Maybe they changed them all in the last 6 months?

for a 5 year period (1997-2002), I probably spent $200/month there.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it when going with a group of non-serious players (colleagues from work), when my main goal was to have a nice Buffalo Burger and a couple bloody marys.

I went again about 6 months ago and it was as I described in my last post.

Everyone go look at the gallery at the website address I posted. The tables sure look like 4.5x9s to me, but I could be wrong.

And to me, any bar that has 15 tables is a POOL HALL, not a bar to shoot pool in. The original poster obvioulsy doesn't want to travel outside of DC, so what I suggested is very appropriate. You clowns think everything is supposed to have Gold Crowns to be a decent pool hall. I am not grumpy, just laughing at your looking down your snooty noses at this place like it is the plague or something. Face it - you were called out by making flippant statements and then trying to back all of your cronies for erroneous statements about pool halls in DC. I am moving on - not any more grumpy or less grumpy - just being me LOL. I am not running for one of the nice guy spots on upbeat posters :D
