On business in DC. Where do you play?

Everyone go look at the gallery at the website address I posted. The tables sure look like 4.5x9s to me, but I could be wrong.

And to me, any bar that has 15 tables is a POOL HALL, not a bar to shoot pool in. The original poster obvioulsy doesn't want to travel outside of DC, so what I suggested is very appropriate. You clowns think everything is supposed to have Gold Crowns to be a decent pool hall. I am not grumpy, just laughing at your looking down your snooty noses at this place like it is the plague or something. Face it - you were called out by making flippant statements and then trying to back all of your cronies for erroneous statements about pool halls in DC. I am moving on - not any more grumpy or less grumpy - just being me LOL. I am not running for one of the nice guy spots on upbeat posters :D

I stand corrected. It is a great pool room for those who don't want to have a conversation with anybody, because the noise is so blaring loud, and if you enjoy the smell of puke and stinky feet, this is the pool room for you! :p

Played at Buffalo quite a bit and not all tables are 9 footers. About half are 9s and the other half are 8 or 8.5s.

It's a decent place but the tables are not in very good shape. And it isn't cheap, but you'd expect that in DC anyway.

Buffalo Billiards

I played in an APA League at Buffalo Billiards. Aside from being in a crappy league there I thought the room was decent. Not a true 'pool hall' but ok for leagues and recreational play. Country/cowboy atmosphere with downtown convenience.

Still prefer Bedrock Billiards better though. =o]

my understanding that the new owners ousted the leagues?

there are two sizes of eight foot tables

... and the original poster asked in the DC area

Springfield Fast Eddie's during the day has the action

Billy, that is, if he has a car. How long do you think it would take somebody to drive to Springfield from D.C. proper in rush hour?

We attended a tournament at Playing Field in Richmond, Virginia, one weekend. I'm sure you know the place. ;) Love that snooker table.

Anyway, we left Friday night, so we could get there the night before and not worry about hitting traffic and being late. It took us 8 hours -- I repeat 8 hours -- to drive from D.C. to Richmond, what is normally a 2.5-hour jaunt in a car. Talk about a nightmare that got worse and worse.

Virginia may be for lovers, but it sucks when it comes to driving anywhere.

Hey JAM

I am sorry to say that Playing Field closed down about a year and a half ago. What a great place!

I will be in Crystal City for a few days and was looking at Lucy`s (formaly Champion Billiards) or something close by that opens say 11am.

Thanks! C.D.

I'm a little out of touch.
Is Champion Billiards in Shirlington still around? That wouldn't be too far from DC.

That's a shame. I loved that pool room. The snooker table was great for action.

Go to where Billy says, that Fast Eddie's in Springfield, if you can. I keep hearing everybody talk about this joint, day action, night action. It seems like that may be the last of a dying breed known as "pool room," at least as far as the D.C. Metropolitan Area. Every place else I've seen that calls itself a pool room is more like a yup spot.

And one could use the metro to get to springfield fast eddie's. it is approx 3mi away...would need a cab.

Yes, but this is NOT near DC, and from what I have heard from my sources, this is NOT a place to be a night.

In general, good pool is during the day only Jen. Opens 11am I think but definately before noon. If there is any real night action it's because it started in the afternoon or league doesn't participate that particular evening. I think Wed is $5 pool night or something like that. Call for info

If your better-half wanted to hit some - Keith can get played during the day Jen. No traffic to speak of in the afternoon sweetie. That's where it's at ... no excuses, negotiations are only 30 mins from upper NW

Hope you are well

You must be a pretend prima donna :D. Let's talk about Deedles (forgot the exact name) - the place you used to like to go in Maryland. If there was any place that smelled like piss and puke, this was it. And if you wanted to see some puke you could just take a walk out back. Who do you think you are kidding here?:D

Did you ever think that the guy may want to meet some women there too? Oh, and going to Adams Morgan is a sure fire way to get get your ass killed, although it has improved slightly in the years.

Speaking of noise disqualifying a pool hall by your lofty definition, did you ever visit the Magic Cue in Germantown. It used to be very loud with the karioki (sp?) singing. But, I must remind you that in 1999 my APA 8 ball team came in second in Lee Tianti's leauges and another Magic Cue team came in first. But, according to your standards, this bar could not possibly have produced some many good APA 8 ball teams because it is not a pool hall. You have been hanging around Keith too long

Right outside the beltway, 15 min from the Washington Monument, in my opinion anyway, is the DC area

Springfield Fast Eddie's at night? Nothing wrong with this location if that's what you are implying. You should check it out, believe your sources are misleading you

Have a nice day ...

When I am in the area I go to a place that used to be called Champion Billiards in Arlington but has changed its name to Lucy's Arl recently. There is another room called Hi Cue close that you might want to check out too.

I am Dietle alumni. "Surliness and flies, no charge" is our motto. I haven't been there in a long while, but I can still walk right on in that front door and guarantee you I will know somebody. It's a vintage neighborhood tavern, and nobody can make them tear it down, thanks to the building moratorium in rockin' Rockville.

The thing about Dietle's is it's one room with one pool table. I was part of the pool gang. That's where I picked up my first cue, until Tom-Tom tried to sneak in there undercover one evening, took me as his partner in a partner's game, and then he introduced me to Randolph Billiards on Boiling Brook Parkway. There's when I knew pool was calling my name.

Check it out: Hank Dietle's

I can still walk into Hank's, and it feels like walking into the home of an old friend.

BTW, it has no vomit or stinky feet odor, and smokers now sit outside if they want to puff. ;)

We may check it out, Billy. I'm planning a road trip to Caldwell, WV soon to hang out with Chan Whitt's father. I'm working on a project that he's involved in. He just opened up a three-table pool room, and I can't wait to check it out.

Man, this guy's journey in life with his son is like something you cannot ever believe would happen. In all my years of pool, I have never met anyone like him. He's a breath of fresh air.

He's so proud of his son, but make no mistake about it, Chan's father can hit 'em pretty sporty. We're going to spend a few days up there and soak up as much pool culture that he's willing to offer. I can't wait!

The fact that you mention a really good APA team when trying to illustrate the quality of players there only proves JAM's point.

BTW my best AZ pool outing ever was in DC. I believe we all went to Breakers in Herndon but fun and alcohol were the main goals not quality pool play.

Like you have ever played there. I have played there. The tables (15 of them - see the website) are 4.5x9. There is no freakn thing as an oversized 8 foot table. If 8 foot tables seem big to you, then they are a commercial brand, not the house brand. House brands are tinier. True however that the tables are not very well maintained because the cloth was a little worn. But if you are in DC looking for a pool hall, this should fit the ticket.

And what pool hall do you know has super house cues? When I played there I found a good house cue - not many albeit. It didn't stink. The food was good etc. Very enjoyable.

Have any of you guys played there even I might ask?
Without reading the rest of this thread I will say I have played there...three times in the last ten years, the most recent being last summer.

This is NOT, I repeat...NOT a place for someone looking to play serious pool. It is for the "giddy" crowd. Those who want to drink and hang out more than they care to play.

The tables are disastrous by any decent poolplayer's standards...and if you are a player you would not be concerned about house cues because you SHOULD have your own.

Good luck.
