could Xiaoting Pan compete with the Mens pros if...

Cripes! What a narrow little world you must live in.

Narrow? Mine is wide open and honest, mate, gloriously free from cowardice.

Perhaps you tell me where I'm wrong? I must be missing this sport or productive activity hoards of women do to stay fit and healthy, cos I don't see it.

There are tons of healthy, fit, determined, accomplished, and socially/professionally successful women around. Are you living under a lump of coal in Newcastle, mate?

Close, but just an ordinary working class sink estate in a provincial city, well away from that there London, where there are "tons of healthy, fit, determined, accomplished, and socially/professionally successful women around", apparently.

None of them around here, pal. I'll find you fifty fat women to one fat man. All slim women around these parts are Polish. You choose to bask in the warmth of denial if you want to - I'll tell it like it is.

With all due respect Sir Thaiger, you are living in one small corner of the world. Take a look around and you will see women leaders in government, business and science EVERYWHERE! They just made a movie about Margaret Thatcher, I hope you didn't miss it.

I'm not totally disagreeing with your opinion on women in sport, but to characterize women in general as ill suited to challenge a man is inappropriate and very narrow minded indeed. Twenty odd years ago I bragged that no woman could beat me in pool, and a certain Robin Bell (Dodson) shut my mouth forever!

As my friend Alfie likes to say, "Keep it nice."

a little offtopic.
I heard by some people that in Scotland the average beauty of women is very low. Is this correct?
I don't believe much in this type of arguments... but a lot of people said to me is true.
Anyway there are people convinced that the average beauty in Italy is at the level of Monica Bellucci. lol

No country or area within the UK is immune to ugliness, but Scotland has a particular problem with obesity, pastiness and red hair - not a great mix.

The only slim women in my city are rich students and immigrants. All Italian women may not look like Monica Bellucci, but I bet the majority of your young ladies are slim.

I'm not characterising women as ill-suited - I'm saying they lack the will to challenge men. It's a numbers game - for whatever reason, women do not participate in sports or activities like men do.

I say we grow a pair and tell them to.

I surely don't want to bore you or attempt to educate you in any way but did you know about:

Alison Hargreaves - In 1995 she climbed Mt. Everest without oxygen or a Sherpa guide. A month later she died in a storm on K2. She climbed some of the world's tallest mountains while pregnant.

How about Amy Johnson (you know who Amelia Earhart was) - Johnson flew solo from Britain to Australia in 1930. She set many distance flying records of that day, surpassing her male counterparts.

Ellen MacArthur - She made the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2005, faster than any man had done it! In 2010 she started the Ellen MacArthur Foundation whose purpose is to re-think, re-design and create a sustainable future for our planet. That's all!

Helen Thayer - In the early 20th Century she made a solo expedition to the North Pole, hauling a sled with 160 pounds of supplies, accompanied by one dog. She also trekked alone across the Gobi desert (1,600 miles!) and spent a year living with a wolf pack in the Arctic Circle. In 2009 she was named one of the most important explorers of the 20th century.

Then there was Gertrude Bell - An English writer, traveler and ambassador who explored the Middle East during the 1800's. She helped establish good relations with the many tribal leaders, who respected and trusted her. She was held in high regard by British officials of that era.

Isabella Bird - She traveled around the world alone in the mid 19th century, going from Scotland to America, crossed the continent and then crossed the Pacific, and made her way through Asia and China, returning home at the age of 73!

Finally I mention Delia Akely - Along with her husband explored Africa in the early 1900's. She studied the most reclusive tribes and even lived among the pygmies. Crossed the desert between Ethiopia and Kenya and explored the Tana river in a dugout canoe, entering at the mouth in the Indian ocean and following to it's origin.

Now who has the balls Mr. Thaiger? You might want to reconsider your estimation of the fairer sex.

Did someone chain you to the ground?

If Xiaoting Pan had Shane Van Boening or Charlie Bryant breaking for her would she be able to compete at 9 Ball with the top men pros and if no they why? Also John Schmidt once mentioned that to nullify the break a little it might be good to have a rule where if you make a ball off the break in 9 or 10 ball your opponent has to push out every time. It would slow the game down but would also even out the field a little.

I don't know about Xiaoting Pan but why would Fu Xiao-Fang or Chen Si-Meng need anyone breaking for them?

Tap,Tap,Tap.... and heres my 2 cents.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=4854377

This was not just a tour title Kelly Kulick won...this was the Tournament of Champions....only champions were in the field. Kelly not only beat Chris Barnes in the finals..but she beat all the champions in the field because of the match game format.

In reality...bowling is played with a 15-16 pound bowling ball..with the pins 60 feet away. Tournaments like this have brutally demanding lane conditions(example:tight pockets) in which your mistake area is literally non-existent. Pool is played on a 9 foot table/with a 19-20 ounce cue. I'm not saying bowling is harder...but I am saying eventually a woman or two will compete at the highest level of pool. Lets face it...its physically possible.

I have no horse in this race but Bartram has offered to play any woman and no one has given him action. If people actually believe a woman could beat him I would think he'd have action. No?

I think his 'balls' statement was in reference to men, not women. I don't think any man wishes for women to grow balls as it would make men obsolete, although the women you posted certainly possessed some gigantic metaphorical cajones.

Although he may be a borderline chauvinistic pig, he is quite correct in that the majority of women spent vast amounts of energy on activities that men feel is a waste of time. In contrast, I bet there are Predominantly female message boards on the Internet that complain about men not having interest in what is important to them and wasting their time in the pool hall or watching sports.

I'm really not sure what you're trying to prove here. If all women have such a pioneering spriit, why do the majority of (British) women sit on their backsides all day, eating chocolate and watching EastEnders?

Bang on, but I bet there are few if any women on those forums who will blindly defend the actions of men, no matter how irresponsible they are. Why do men ALWAYS leap to the defence of women? Isn't 'the fairer sex' a sexist and outdated concept?

With equality comes responsibility.

Yes the majority of young people here is slim. Finding skinny people is very easy ( for example I'm 5-7.5 for 115lbs...). I heard the rate of overweight people is raising because of the fastfoods and junk food in general.
However the average height here is very low, me at 5ft7.5 in I feel average ( a little lower than average but not by much, instead in germany I was a midget walking around).

The girl is Kaya Scodelario

So you categorize and stereotype women en-masse, just by your personal observations of women in your [small, by geographical area comparison] country?

The issue is sheer number. There are exponentially more men as members of this forum than women -- that's a fact. There are exponentially more opportunities for men to "mix it up" and respond when it comes to posting here.

And, the issue with "always leaping to the defense of women" has to do with folks having had it -- sick of it -- when it comes to discriminating against women "because she's a woman." Women have the history of being discriminated against, not men. THAT is why women don't have to come to the aid of men -- there was never a historical precedence to.

Isn't 'the fairer sex' a sexist and outdated concept?

Yes it is. Odd that you brought this phrase up, when noone else did.

With equality comes responsibility.

Yes, I agree with this. But you have to have the equality part first. In your eyes and viewpoint, it seems, that is a milestone yet to be achieved, and still a long ways off.

Tim, with all these pro-gender-bias posts, are you trying to position yourself as the negative reciprocal of Gloria Steinem or something? Not sure what you're trying to achieve here.

-Sean
