There are usually multiple ways to shoot any combination shot and advantages sometimes to shooting it one way or the other. I absolutely love caroms too. Stealing balls that are dead if you hit the first ball right but look like magic to somebody that didn't see the shot when they "safed" you playing one pocket.
Scratch pool is an entertaining way to practice sometimes. Instead of hitting the cue ball you hit the object ball into the cue ball and the the object ball has to be pocketed. Sharpens up your aim and seeing angles properly. Not sure of the rules or even if this is the proper name but always starting with an object ball and having to hit the cue ball in the middle with or without a carom should make one pocket pretty interesting. I'd only go to six though, a safety game on the last few balls could last forever!
