Dan's Cue "In the Making"

Hi,

Here is a modified practical version of Dans inlay design. When working with someone who is designing their own inlays there are geometric and cutter tool adjustments the cue maker need to adjust so it can become a reality.

Dan is learning these things as he has to compromise as part of the overall process. Working with him has been fun and I love his design.

Rick

Pics posted on page 1:

Razor sharp point ends work on the outside of the contour but not in the crotch area of profile. A little cad tweaking and we have a part and pocket.

Are you for real. This cue is going to be unreal when it done. Those rings are the best I have ever seen.

When will this cue be over and done?

Hi,

I am hoping to have this cue done before the show in Philly June 8th. Dan now wants to change the inlay design to a double pattern red line and add ivory now so we are back to the drawing board.

I am building other cues at the same time so who knows when we will finish. I would have had all of the inlay done this weekend and would be finishing it this week but that's life.

Thanks for your appreciation,

Rick

Inlay Design Modification

Code:
Hi,

Here is Dan's modified inlay design.

He wanted to mirror the red, black, red seen on the forearm points. A little flip flop and .040 gap in the middle and wa la, his inlay matches the point veneer pattern.

I cut parts and a test pocket tonight using maple for fitting the pocket comp.

Dan, you have been a big pain in the ass but now that the work is done and this inlay coupon in verified, we can finally finish this cue. BTW, thanks for being a pain in the ass and reaching for a higher apple on the tree because you hit a home run on this one. Can't wait to see the red, black, red in the butt of the cue.

When we put the thin vertical ivory bars down the center, we will see uneven diamonds in the blind area, Al la Stew's style.

Rick

New butt sleeve double inlay pattern geometry. Thin double ivory bars to be added down the center repeating at a smaller scale in the ebony point stock.

I don't know how I'll feel after the addition of the "thin ivory bars down the middle," but I think that inlay pattern looks pretty awesome just the way it is now. A traditional feel with a contemporary twist. That cue is turning out very nicely!

What happened to the old cue gallery??????

Okay"..........................let's hear it

Hi,

I just cut the pockets and glued in the double red parts. Dan was just here and he wants the ivory bars. It works with the geometry but we are going from .038 to .025 and I will use the .015 mill so the space between them matches the veneer thickness.

I will post new pics in a few hours.

Cue almost ready for micarta joint, rings and a pin install. Dan has rejected the ivory bars as he sees it as a done deal now that I have installed the inlays. Many agree. Good Design job Dan!!!!! The micarta joint and the matching box veneer rings on the joint and shaft will balance out the look. Rings, joint and pin in a few days

Rick cue looks good buddy KEEP POSTING UPDATED PICS...................

I'll second that!!! I've been in this thread numerous times, and thought I'd posted comments in the past...guess I was wrong! :p

Really cool design by the owner...really cool progress pictures showcasing the build along the way...and yes, I like the detailed information Rick...so, for my sake, please don't stop posting this way! ;)

Jason

Thanks Jason,

This cue has taken many more weeks than I would normally do if I design it.

Dan has been involved in the design all along the way and has been very deliberate about every detail especially rings and inlays.

We are now on the down cline to finishing it and I will be happy to see it in his hands running an 8 and out with it in one pocket.

Dan's Cue Delivered

Hi,

Here is Dan's cue delivered. The 2nd shaft is waiting for a matching tip. I had it ready 2 weeks ago but he let me take it to Ken's show in my case.

Thanks Dan for creating such a unique design and for being a patient man,

Rick

your furry quality control inspector must be very strict due to the exceptinal quality of your cues:grin:

Cue making process posts

Your posts are amazing and incredibly informative. I look forward to seeing them and hope you continue to show all of us how you design and construct your works of art.
