The guy that tells you what you did wrong...

Just Turn & Look At Him, Stare & Then Say......

"Those who can do.......Those who can't teach."

Then shut up and resume playing.........remember that free advice is worth exactly how much you paid to get it.......absolutely nothing!

I agree, it's kind of rude. Some people have that personality. They have to let you know how clever they are, like... "even if I can't make every ball, at least I know the right shot and how to play it".

If it happens occasionally, and it's said the right way, you can take it as constructive criticism. But when they do it all the time, it becomes clear they're not looking to help anyone, they're just acting out their own issues. If it weren't for pool, they'd be telling someone how they should be driving or how to talk to other people or how to dress.

My response is something like:
"Don't comment on other people's missed shots. Pool etiquette 101."

If that seems too serious, like you just want to gently zing them... you could try:

"you're right. Maybe if I learn to think like you, I'll shoot as good as you someday".
Say it with a smile and they get the hint without it being a big confrontation.

Free advice!

Lol at complaining because someone is offering free advice. There was a time when you couldn't have someone teach you something unless you gambled with them. My advice, take all the help someone is willing to offer. Even if they aren't a pro, or maybe you're even a ball or two better than them. You don't know everything about the game, so if you want to get better, be humble.

If it really does bother you though, and you don't want to get better. Then just be polite about it, and let that person know. As long as you're not a dick about it, I'm sure they'll stop.

Yes! Free advice is a very good price!
I too get annoyed by average players who think they know everything. Then again, I've gotten quite good advice at times from folks whose knowledge was somewhat limited.
Some players believe it's better to learn by trial and error, others believe getting instruction is the best. I wish there had been teachers available in the '50s when I started; I might not have picked up some bad habits that I still struggle with. Nowadays I teach because I know how good it feels to get better and I would like others to experience that as well.
I once had a stranger approach me to say that he saw that something was leaking from the motor of my car. I took his advice and checked it out, saving a ton of money. So "free advice" is not necessarily worthless. as another poster stated.
As a teacher, coaching/teaching is sort of "in my blood". When I see a player doing something that seriously detracts from their success, I really "want" to help them. There will always be those who appreciate help and those who don't...

What are some good responses for the guy that sits at the table and tries to tell you what you do wrong after every shot... It gets old and I'm looking for some spiteful responses

Response;

"you sound like my X''

There is a bar I like to go practice at just for this reason. A
Bunch of old guys that talk crap the minute I get in the door and the whole time I'm playing. They don't even realize you can use English to avoid a scratch on cut shots! I love it, it's great mental practice.

Great response but a little controdictory... I'm a teacher by occupation.

Good perspective Donny. In all my yrs of teaching I've always found players listen and learn faster, when they are a paying customer.
Having run auto repair shops for 17 yrs, I don't find and oil leak a good comparative as car failures can lead to Very dangerous situations. I almost broke down after visiting Jay H. with a new rental car on the 405 fwy south out of Los Angeles Saturday afternoon, luckily I made it to Pacific Coast Hwy.

i'm going to start with this - it depends on the guy. i have a few friends that shoot very well. if they are the ones telling me what i did wrong my ears perk up and they have my attention until they stop talking.
if a stranger tells me what i did wrong, he's got aboout 30 seconds. if in that short time i don't hear something good, he's losing me. if i know for a fact the person trying to tell me something doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground then the circus starts.
if you really need to be mean you can start here,

oh really i didn't hit that right. how would you have it from your chair. that's where you spend most of your time.

can i shake your hand. i need to practice not looking smug when i win.

you're sister has a much better stroke than you. tell her to call me tonight.

my stroke's no good. you mom said it was so good it threw her back out last night.

i mean, i'm just sayin. i don't play that well but i would, and have, use any one of those. but i have no mental filter and don't really care aboout people. you may not want to be too mean. and if you do get mouthy you should really be able to either play well, or be willing to throw (and take) a punch or three.

Tell him if you wanted to hear from a asshole you would fart

Annoying guy/girl "Do you know what your problem is?"

Me: "My problem right now is some dumb*** is trying to give me advice."

Unsolicited advice from a guy I don't like, don't know, or don't respect after I've just missed or done something stupid is right at the top of stuff that'll piss me right off and I won't care if you think I'm a jerk.

Bottom line, leave me the F alone.

I think these are the 2 best exactly what the OP wanted I think.
