What are considered some gaudy cues?

Wayne?

Ginacues?..I love them but some are over the top.

Samsara?

You can post pics of some of the monstrosity that has been floating around. I will look for some as well.

This is really an eye of the beholder issue, but I would nominated Meucci's to be added to the list. I will admit that there are some Meucci models that I do like and would not mind adding to my cue collection for their visual design, but there have been as many Meucci designs if not more that I thought were more gaudy than appealing.

Yep, me too...some of the Meucci Originals were really beautiful, some I just scratched my head over. Loved the Captain Hook, hated the Road Agent. Even though I was a rabid McDermott man in the beginning, I never liked the decal/painted cues...the Elvis cue, Marilyn Monroe cue and the whole wildlife series of McDermotts always set my teeth on edge....HATED them!!

They were probably the original when it came to that.

I must admit there are some I like because they are "themed" cues but some are way over the top.

Eye Of The Beholder

I don't want to insult you, so I apologize if this does, but if you have to ask then you probably don't know the difference.
I think most cues with inlays are "Gaudy",
Some are just much more gaudy than others.
Less is more as far as cues are concerned.
Many gaudy Meucci's and McDermotts come to mind first.
It's sort of like the poor taste involved when someone gets murals or ugly graphics applied to their automobiles. If they knew how distasteful it looks to most people they wouldn't do it, but they like it and think it looks good.
Chances are good that these same people are not tasteful dressers either.
I like to think we need people with bad taste, because if everybody was as tasteful as I am then I wouldn't seem so tasteful!
A good example is a beautiful girl that reduces her natural beauty with a bunch of tattoos and
piercings. What a shame!

To each their own

I believe cues with just points are like cars with just a primer coat....still a car and runs but not the one I want to own.

When the cue-maker adds points and veneers and inlays and rings to highlight and accentuate the cue's overall design and appearance like Gus Szamboti was known for, and of course lots of other well known cue-makers as well, it adds style and life to the cue. The final design is the cue-makers mark of distinction and represents what he thinks improves and enhances the cue's looks. And we all know that this doesn't make the cue play one bit better but nonetheless, many.....many......many more hours of cue-making labor were invested in making those designs.

Now I know CNC changed everything but the greats, the cue-masters....the cues they made were indeed better than any simple version cue they ever might have made. Why? Because they picked the very best of their old growth wood inventory and althought it hard to imagine, they were even more meticulous making any of their custom cues (albeit gaudy to some) versus than knocking out a Titlesit version plain Jane.

What's gaudy....anything overdone is too much....don't ya think? A cue-maker that comes to mind is Bert Schraeger......or Perry Weston and some Thomas Wayne cues too. Any cue-maker can make a cue that's viewed to be gaudy. However, the classic design....4 points, 6 points, 8 points with veneers and inlays (ivory, MOP, abalalone), stitches, rinngs etc., those cues are masterpieces and desired by everyone.......And those that deny are reluctant to admit or even acknowledge this because they'll only become more discontent with what they have........Let's face it.......It's jealousy and envy more than it's those cues are too "gaudy" or overdone in any way......................Come on, next thing you'll tell me is everyone in Congress and the Senate are honest, earnest individuals or that Santa Claus will be bringing me a cue for Christmas.......Duh?

Now admittedly, there are gaudy cues out there but Bill Stroud, Tim Scruggs, Ed Prewitt, Dennis Searing, Richard Black, Verl Horn, Paul Mottey, James White, Jerry Franklin, Joel Hercek....I mean I could go on and on..........those guys made cues that are more like works of art most of us can't afford, But to demean or even imply there's any aura of gaudiness about their cues, or even their workmanship was maybe too showy, is just literally absurd. But everyone is entitled to their opinion even if it's equivalent to believing the Sun rises in the West. How will they feel in the morning if they wake up tomorrow and look to the East....Oh well, live and learn I suppose.

Alas, as was written earlier, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...........just don't squint when you look at these other cues so you can at least see them in all their glory and splendor.........I only wish I owned more of these type cues by the aforermentioned cue-makers.

Aren't u gonna be making some cues yourself? I'm sure they won't be gaudy but will probably have bluish shafts and get misplaced in a pool hall and never returned cos someone in your pool hall would've gotten hold of that uber pricey cue you made and contemplate how to rid of it...i might buy it when it surfaces here on AZ..I'm sure I can get a better deal that way :)

Many are complete dog's dinners. The time for decadent opulence is long gone. The sooner makers start producing good playing PJs for under $150, the better.

The market for fancy high end customs will become vanishingly rare in the coming years. Nero is fiddling whilst Rome is burning.

There is a guy who posts on a car board I go to who is a collector of Marilyn items. I'm giving him a heads up on this thread. He has written me of playing pool in the past, so maybe I've sold a cue? :)
