$50,000.00 Match

Justin as always a great post! Efren certainly wasn't tired when we first started to play and no one had to twist his arm to get him to play. Once the agreement was set up with the rights to the match he started practicing and was ready to go. Efren came out of the gate and broke and ran at least the first two or maybe the first three games.

I was staking the match and SVB wanted a good chunk of the action himself, pulling out a lot of his own money and putting it in! I am glad I was able to watch this match, and will remember it for a long time.

As far as the match with SVB playing Efren even one pocket, I think that SVB has a good chance to win but is a slight underdog. Obviously staking this wouldn't make too much sense.

To this day the best one pocket I have ever watched was from Efren, he is in my opinion the best player to ever pick up a stick. I watched Efren give Scott Frost 9 to 7 and beat him to death one time at Derby. All Scott had to say afterwards is I can't wait to play an American! Scott has gotten better since and Efren isn't quite at his same level so obviously now it is a much closer game.

We all know what Grady Mathews used to say, i quote " i'd love to play a guy who shoots low % shots, because he will miss more than he makes" Scott is not naturally fit for one pocket, he has no patience for up table game' therefore, no match for Efren.

But a low % shot that is followed by a damn-near sure 7 more is hard to fade

It doesn't seem like anyone is head over heels in love with staking someone against Efren in a RACE TO 15, BIG MONEY ONE POCKET MATCH.

The world still loves Efren, despite the fact that he is aging, despite the fact that he could only muster a second place finish IN STRAIGHT POOL against John Schmidt, this past week, despite the following statement from AZB Home Page concerning the recent 14.1 tournament results : "Meanwhile, in the other bracket, Efren Reyes was terrorizing his opponents with his pinpoint cueball control and defense. The Filipino star went undefeated in 9 consecutive matches and pocketing 1250 balls to reach the finals."

Hell, maybe John Schmidt should be added to the list. Afterall, he has won DCC One Pocket Championship a time or two.

Again, percentage wise in a long race it might prove fatal, i am not saying he does not play, he shoots like God, but his odds against Efren for long race is very low, due to his style of play, and doubt if any one welling to back him for that only reason. Especially that Efren knows him well by now, so he is not going to get shots to shot at, other than lucky combo shots.

John is great man, and might be good match, but if you want large audience he might not be the one to pick. You need one that if he wins over Efren people will buy the DVD anyway, like Earl, SVB ..

Naji,
You're talking about Scott Frost, who is already said that he has the financial means to play this match, but chooses not to ask Efren out of respect for him.
just saying......

That is great, if he plays the match at his pool room TV table he might have chance, but any other table i really doubt he will have a chance, but pool has 20-30% luck factor too, so it will certainly be good match to watch.

Naji,

Thank you very much for your expert game making skills and match up knowledge.

Who are you and where did you acquire your uncanny ability to be so knowledgeable?

I will take your comments as complement i hope, thank you. I have been playing one pocket for 35 years, watched almost every match there is to be watched on DVD, or stream. Unfortunately, my work time and family obligation prevented me from pursuing the game or pool, on high level, so i am local to Virginia area and one or 2 pool halls only due to location, play the 10, 20, $50 games when i can. I travel also, but unfortunately my luck with the cities i travel too is not great, only one time in KY i ran across patch eye, played few games with him he got me then, great old pro road player, and ran into him again another time i broke even with him.

Efren WAS dead tired when they played. He was about 55 at the time and had already played 12 hours of pool that day before the match. He is 58 now. Do you think Shane can beat Efren right now in a 15 ball all around? rotation, 8 ball, one pocket, full rack banks, and straight pool. If you do you and Justin should get together and make it happen. It will be the most widely watched pool match ever. Dont wait until Efren is 80 it wont have the same meaning then
P.S. im not ragging on Shane, he is a great player but people forget real quick what they witness.

I read this as Scott saying that he honestly feels that Efren has no chance of beating him...so out of respect for Efren, he won't challenge him to this match...but if Efren says lets play...then he won't feel bad about "defending" himself...and beating Efren into retirement...with a clear conscience:rolleyes:

Glen,
There's a lot going on at Buffalo Billiards in Metairie, most of it taking place on those two 9' Diamond tables that you leveled in the front.
Lots of players camped out making money hand over fist giving our guys weight that they can't refuse and still losing.

Efren says that he can beat Scott Frost.

He also said that he needed a backer for that kind of money.

That's all I have for the moment.

I don't normally bet on other people but this is one time that I would.

A few of our gamblers down here in New Orleans mentioned that they would put up a few thousand on Efren to see the match played here at Buffalo Billiards. Hell, I don't bet on other people but I would put up a few hundred just to see him play here as well.

Normally, Buffalo Billiards doesn't stream anything but this match might be an exception if it takes place here.

Scott and NITRO are rolling in Louisiana Dough so I don't think them putting up their end would be a big problem.:thud:

So let's see this. I personally hope Efren beats the pants off of who ever steps up. I think it is unlikely, either way, hears some cheddar for Efren to just come a get if he wants. Some one make a phone call and let put this one to bed.

best,

Justin

Best idea EVER!

Full rack all around between these two would be amazing! I would pay to see it for sure

I was a witness to Cliff beating Efren LIKE A DRUM, at one of the LEGENDS OF ONE POCKET tournaments in Baton Rouge, LA several years back. Race to 4.

In the fourth game, Cliff led Efren 3-0 and had 7 balls in the fourth game. Cliff sliced in the 8th ball and the cue went around the table multiple rails as if it were riding on air, only to finally fall into one of the corner pockets at pocket creeping speed.

Others can tell you what happened. It's too painful to talk about, even if you were just a spectator.

Is this available on DVD?

There is no doubt Cliff was a monster! A few years ago when he developed that sort of hitch in his backstroke, it seemed like his game fell a few notches. But knowing his rep, that could be a move too. maybe Cliff wants us to believe he isn't still the best American one pocket player

I don't believe it is available on DVD. If you find out it is, please let me know in this thread or via PM. I wouldn't mind seeing how Cliff's cue ball went so bad. I remember there was a lot of humidity but one would think that the humidity would slow up the speed of the cue ball. As I remember the shot, the cue ball just kept rolling and rolling until............clunk.......

I'll be talking with THE FREEZER & NITRO about the Efren match since they are still hanging out at Buffalo Billiards in Metairie, LA.

The $50,000 match at Buffalo Billiards looks like it is a doable thing from everyone I have spoken to so far.

I heard Scott Frost telling someone that Buffalo Billiards is THE BEST ACTION pool room he has been in in over three years.

Chris "NITRO" Gentile is kind of quiet, until he starts raining banks but I'll get the both of them talking more about this VERY POSSIBLE match this evening.
