Rep must not mean anything !!!

Briefly...

In the upper right hand corner of each post, next to the post number, is a button. If you hold your cursor over that button, it mention adding to that posters reputation.

When you push that button, it gives you the option to Approve of Disapprove of that particular post. And a box to write why. When you do that, it will send that into the system, which affects the green (or red) boxes under that persons post count. Thus, the term "greenies".

In theory, the more "Approves" a person gets, the more green boxes they get, and a higher "rep" count. The higher the rep count, the more weight that poster has when giving rep to others, both positive and negative. It takes many "Disapproves" to change a poster from green to red, and similarly, just a few greens to change someone who is red at that time.

It's supposed to be an indicator.

The system is broken, in many way, especially in how it's used. And there is a cap to how much rep someone can have with many tied at "max rep". (Somehow, even I have hit max rep.) So it's not a terribly accurate system. But it still can be a fun way to compliment someone on a good comment, or a funny one.

***EDIT*** Too late. :p

Okay, I got all that, but what the heck is a GRAY rep? I got one of those from someone and the comment was not very explanatory. (Actually there was no comment...)

I'm pretty sure gray rep is given by someone who is new and doesn't have many, if any, rep points.

He didn't have enough creds to give you either a red or a green.

I personally think reps are a good thing. They, for one, can give a person a feeling of confidence when, after a positive or seemingly helpful reply, they're rewarded with a greenie. It also promotes a sense of responsibility when posting, knowing that a greenie might be in the offing. Conversely, the possibility of a red rep may help remind a person to be on alert and watch their friggin' p's and q's. We all stray, from time to time, but having a rep based system on this forum is the best way I know of to keep us on the straight and narrow.

If a person with max rep gives you a rep, you immediately get full green. If they give you bad rep, you instantly go to full red. 99% of the people on here will get one or the other within their first 20 posts. And it seems like 90% of the ones with full red rep will get banned before too long. Occasionally you'll get an exception like truman who hovers at red for a while and then gets back in the green.

I wouldn't read much into it. Even full red rep doesn't mean the person's terrible, sometimes it just means they have a very unpopular point of view. There are guys who are banned on here... I red some of their posts and think "jeez I agree with damn near everything he says."

Yeah, I wonder if it's through tapatalk or something, because I don't have anything like that either in the upper right part of a post. For me, it's below the name/location thing. There are 2 buttons, one for rep'ing and one for reporting a post. If you clikc on the rep on, it will give you a choice of 'i agree' or 'i disagree' or something, and a space where you can put in a message about it. It was forever and day before I knew what that even was or how to check it. No clue who may have rep'd me the first few years! :embarrassed2: Now, I get one like once every few weeks or something just to remind me that sometimes I say something not so stupid.

I agree with PT. Its a nice way to chat.I offer one up for a meaningful post or something that makes me laugh.

I got most of mine for being a smart a ss jokester so I have always enjoyed reading the comments that come along with a Greenie.

PS - Good post PT. I sent you a Greenie.

Is this the same Road Runner that has been selling cues and attaching zip files for pictures.

If it is or isn't, what a Bone Head. Last thing I'm doing is opening an unknown Zip File just for a picture.

canadians . . .

canadiens? . . .

Ooops. I forgot I don't use the default V Bulletin software. I far prefer a different one that perhaps many others would like. On the far bottom left of the page is a box that surely says two tech or something. Click the down arrow next to it and try AZBilliards vB style. Far better color contrast and a little more functionality. Every time you log in, it will stay on that style. and you'll have your cute scale too. ;)

Theoretically the reds should be a way to privately point out such behavior without needing to call attention to the receiver in the process. In practice, however, we tend to see the receiver of the red publicly post that they got a red, calling out the giver of such, and all too often getting banned down the line for failure to take into consideration the type of behavior that warranted the red to begin with.

Or, worse, it becomes yet another way of trolling. Some consider the rep system to be a game of sorts, and I've seen many boards (often ones provided by a corporate entity) that had to shut down the system entirely due to such "games" becoming very heated affairs. I can't recall such a rep system doing a lot of good in and of itself (some boards use it to alert mods) on any board that, frankly, didn't need such a system to exist in the first place.

As someone who just recently received my first red rep, I can say that my life hadn't even
begun until I received it. Wow....it felt so liberating. I just had such a hard time constantly explaining to people that I work with that I had 4,897,987,987 rep points on AZB so I must know what I'm talking about.

Quite right, old chap, but I must admit to some facetiousness in regard to my response.
The long and short of it is; we could just as easily live without it, as live with it, and the trolls be damned.

?

What are the bluish grey colored reps stand for in your user cp ?

I seen red and greens, but I recently got a bluish grey colored rep, just curious ?
