Hey there everyone, can someone point me in the right direction of someone who can replace a tip on my cue (Viking stock hard maple shaft with LePro tip to a Tiger Sniper) and take down the taper a little (I believe it is 12.5 or 13 and would like it to be 11.5 - 12 mm) around D.C.

I don't have car so it would be tough to get outside the District but would love to know who is in the area.

Thanks for any recommendations and if you are in D.C. and want to shoot some let me know too!

Cheers,
Jason

Here is the most complete list available, as far as I know.

No listings is DC, but plenty of good ones in Maryland and Virginia.

All i know are in VA & MD, Action pool tour have one almost all the time, no DC action tour, not sure why!

Do it yourself, tip replacement the easiest, look at youtube, shaft reduction, all it needs a drill preferably variable speed and locking, vise to hold drill, matching stud to you shaft joint, caliper to measure diameter, and sand paper start with 120 grits until close to what you need, then go to 300 then 400 then 600 and good gloves due to heat
you can try it at cheap shaft first to master it.

Does sandpaper shave down the ferrule too?

Sometimes the regional tour tournaments have a cue mechanic on site at the event. You might want to check out some of the local tours, find out where they are playing next, call ahead or e-mail to see if there will be a cue mechanic there. I used to see them all the time at pool tournaments, local cue mechanics. HTH!

I will 2nd that...and thanks for pointing me toward Charlie, in my time of need. He is way the fluck up North from DC though.

I sense a cab ride in Texas Prez's future...hmmm:smile:

But really, I say mail it somewhere. Gonna cost you `$30 to send it, but at least you will be done with it and it will get done right.

yes nicely, my cue was 13 mm it is now 11 mm, the ferrule is the original one, it is thin only time it cracks is when shooting with wiped out tip, i cut the cracked ferrule piece and now i have about 1/2 ferule since then i am replacing tip when i should.

Thanks for the suggestion Naji, but I prefer to let someone with a cue lathe do work for me. Tip replacement kits are nice but most of the time you cannot get the same kind of epoxy used by a professional.

And sand paper on a shaft often times can cause irregularity on a shaft and requires a ton of upkeep with burnishing and sandpaper can ruin a ferrule (so be careful if you DIY!)

And thanks to everyone else for the suggestions. Kinda bummed no one in D.C. or Arlington is around to help; I'd be a regular customer!!!

Texas Prez: I'll put myself out on a precarious limb here. You make your way to me in Laurel, MD and I'll get you up to Charlie's in Baltimore. I can do it on the weekends other than this weekend or next weekend.

Where are they playing pool in Laurel now? Is there a new place yet since USA Billiards closed? Do you know if the owner of USA billiards opened up a new pool room? I heard that he was supposed to.

JAM,

I'm still really new to the area and haven't gotten a feel for what is where.

I'm hearing of a place called Bankshots here in Laurel but I haven't been there since I'm not a bar box player.

I haven't heard of USA Billiards but there is Triple Nines in Elkridge about 9 miles from me. I'll probably make Triple Nines my go to place. I think they may host an occasional APT or Planet Pool event but not sure how often.

Glen Burnie is within reach from here as well. Big Daddy's is there and they are hosting an APT event this weekend. 10 ball I believe. A couple of the forum members are playing in this event, so I'm there for the moral support and BS between their matches LOL.

Other than that, I'm still pretty much in the dark but as I explore the area a little more, I'll certainly share any info I have with the forum.

Thanks for the reply.

Big Daddy's, I guess, is probably the best pool room in the area for Laurel.

Top Hat Cue Club in Parkville (near Baltimore) also gets a thumbs-up. They used to have tournaments there on Sundays: Top Hat Cue Club.

Virginia is probably too far to drive from where you're at.

Frederick, MD has Champion's.

That's about it in the immediate Metro D.C. area, sad to say. :frown:

It would depend on where in VA. I go to Annandale on Monday nights. I'm still a league player for now but trying to break away from it.

I try to get together with a couple of the forum members here and play in Springfield, Woodbridge, etc. on occasion.

Frederick is also a hike from here too.

I'm not exactly tournament caliber LOL. At least in my opinion anyway. Working on it but just not there yet (again in my opinion).

At some point, I'll make the excursion up to Top Hat. Thank you for the link to it.

Ridiculously nice offer Six, but there's no need for you to do that. I just got a new cue and want to play with it but my player cue works just fine for the time being.

I've been in the area for about two years or so and there really is a lackluster pool scene in the D.C. I do league as well in Arlington. And there are some decent players, but within the district it is like a ghost town; only about four of five actual pool halls and rarely weekly tournaments (that I have heard about).

Next time you are in the Arlington area let me know if you are looking to shoot around some (I am most certainly not in tournament shape either!)

Texas,

There is a cuemaker who frequents this form aphelps, he is in Lusby MD, and does good work. We are in the country down here thus a car, or horse is essential (LOL). There are not many cuemakers near you, until you get to Annapolis/Baltimore.

Tell us some more about the pool scene in DC. I'm aware of two rooms one near the Zoo and the other in the Adams-Morgan section of DC (if they are still there) it's been decades since I was up there. What is in Arlington?

Yes I think I know the ones you are referring to. Bedrock Billiards is right in Adams Morgan and is owned by Bedrock Bars, who also owns and runs Rocket Bar in Chinatown, Buffalo Billiards in DuPont, Atomic Billiards in Cleveland Park, and they also own Continental and Carpool in Arlington. All these place are pretty nice, but they are places that haven't really catered to poolplayers; more drink specials than there are tournaments.

In Arlington, I play in a league at Bailey's in Ballston. They have decent Diamond Tables and both smoking and nonsmoking sections. I think Lucy's Billards off of 395 is probably the best place to play in the area that I know of. It is a great setup for tournaments and is packed just about every night. Hi-Cue in south Arlington has a snooker table, so that gives it a +1 in my book.

The big thing about this whole area is that it seems like there is a lack of tournaments; if they exist, they don't publicize them well. I am still hoping to find out about some secret back room with a nine foot gold crown in or around D.C. where all the players in the know go. If you know about this imaginary place and are holding out, let me know! I want in! ;-)

If you looking where a lot of the players go to gamble, that would be Fast Eddie's in Springfield.

CreeDo has informed me that First Break in Sterling also has some action going as well as a little going on at Breakers in Herndon.

Thanks I remember many of them, but I was unaware of the two in Arlington. Lucy's in Shirlington (former Champions) I have been to many time.

The secret room you speak of with the 9 ft GC is in my basement.

:)

I went to DC in 1975 and about 5 miles from the capital was a little hole in the wall pool room. When you wlaked in, there was about 8-10 tables lined up one by one. In the back was a private room with a 3 cushion table. I doubt it is there now. Anyone now the name of this place?
