Getting Started

Could someone help me in determining what is involved getting started in basic cuemaking? I know that there are other posts out there but I know that starting out I would be happy to have equipment to refinish - do wraps - ferrules, etc. I would like to be able to buy blanks and use them to make sneakies turning my own shafts and learning about the various tapers. Would I need a full blown lathe for this? Would eventually get into merry widow style cues but don't see me ever doing points. I remember years ago seeing a DVD on making sneakies but can't seem to find it now?

Thinking about cuemaking.....

....the first thing to do would be to get Chris Hightower's book (The Cuebuilding Book From Tree, to Tip, to Trade Show).

If, after reading what's involved in cuemaking, you're still interested, Chris can set you up with the equipment you need to do it.

Chris has a great book and his videos are also an excellent source of guidance. If you still want to build cues, get one of his lathes.

I can make it easy for you. You will need about 5K up front with a back up of about another 5K. If you don't have that sitting loose you will not get where you say you want to go.

I second the motion......

I might add that if you decide to go forward after reading the the book........ then buy Chris's DVD's............

Then get out your check book and buy some equipment....

good luck

I agree with you 100% Tom. I didn't believe it when guys told me that, and now I'm right at $10,000 invested in my shop. I bought it pieces at a time, but when you add it all up, its amazing how much cash you put into your shop. And the scary part is, I'm ready to put another $5k into it. Lol. And I will, as soon as I get another $5k. Lol.

Truth

Points are easy--the rest of it is hard.

I made half-splice cues with less than $2k in tools.

Money will buy you equipment, but it will never replace talent and understanding.

Very well said sir!!!!

If cue making is your only desire I would think the 5K and 5K in reserve is pretty accurate, but it is a little high if repairs are in your future. If you are going to start out doing repairs then you can spend much less and let the money you make doing repairs pay for everything else. I pretty much built my shop off repair money reinvested. If you have an income so you can dedicate what you make to putting back into the business, you could start with just one lathe and not many extras and let what you make buy everything else on piece at a time.

Thanks for all the good information Will be picking up the Hightower book to see what is involved and go from there.
