bad tip intallation technique?

Like anything, you have to do it enough to get the feel for it. Even using toolpost mounted cutters one can F#$% up a ferrule if you don't have the feel down for it. They also, IMO, don't cut as close to the ferrule for the smooth transition. I use a new utility blade to trim with each time, and have the lathe running in reverse as I do it. I have messed up and gouged a ferrule or two, but have also done that with a toolpost mounted cutter also, so IMO, it's 50/50. When that has happened, I changed the ferrule at no charge.
I also use the blade to shape the tip, with a tool blank in the tool holder to rest the blade on as a steady rest, if you will.
I, personally, with no disrespect meant to the video guy, use a carbide cutter in the toolpost to face the ferrule before tip placement to ensure a truely squared face for the tip. I also sand the back of the tip on a flat plate, then soak the back of it with CA and let dry. Then resand and then glue tip on and wipe excess glue before it hardens.
Haven't had a tip come off since using this method, but then again, different ways to get the same end result.

The tip shaper used in this vid is from unique products,it looks like it has been modified to fit the tool post holder of the taig style lathes. This shapes uses the snap off utility knife blades.

Cue Man has them on his website, but you should ask him how well they perform on layered tips (I'd like to know myself). They are called "Automatic Tip Shaper"

Scroll down about 1/3 of the page to see it at this link:

The tip shaper that Chris sells works great on layered tips, I have one and that's what I use for right now. I'm new to this and although I have used JUST a blade to trim the tips down, I still don't have it down to a 100% science and they don't always come out right, so when I screw one up with a blade, I'll use the tip shaper from Chris to straighten out my screw up.

Ouch.
This is a pretty old vid I taped,
2 lathes ago anyway.
When I cut this tip off, all the glue came with the old tip, so I didn't really need to use carbide to face the Ferrulle, the blade scraped the glue off easy enough.
I don't use the tip shaper from unique anymore, I've switched to using a template like the one bob Dz sells.

ahh thats you? No offense was intended.. I figure the OP of the video might be on here.
you make the razor blade technique look easy!! which by experience it isnt at first :)

Just scared me how you can see white of the ferrule chunk up every once in a while.. and id like to hear how most ppl do it on here as me just being a noob.

Thanks guys

Ha ha
That's not ferrule shavings, actually just excess glue :)
I'm going to post some more vids of tip installs and such
Want to do an ultra skin install vid.

I thought about the glue... but that always scares me! How do you know if its glue or ferrule?

You should do some more videos and inform me when you do! I love watching how other people do stuff and your camera work was the best ive seen on youtube!

The only way to get good with the razor blade is to do it :)
I've got a few videos up, check em out :)
My camera work really stinks though, I need to have a cameraman!!

Do you have a link to this "template" you speak of ? Thanks.

Something like this but not exactly

tip

Please take off that bracelet for future video's. The taig will just sputter if it catches it, but a regular lathe will take your hand off. If you put in on Utube, some idiot will try it.

I was going to mention it to you Bear.
Todd has a radius cutter listed in his accessory section. Fits on top of the cross slide and it appears that he is using it for shaping tips. You may find it useful for other jobs too.

Very reasonably priced as well.

Where I get one of those Joey?

I have one with two ends. I have no clue where my best friend and mentor Kerry Zeiler got them. I think he had them brazed locally.
You can also have an angle on the front of the blade.
That way when you're turning a ferrule, it cuts a little more on the ferrule side than at the wood side. A little gap between the wood and the cutter, you're 600 grit away from being flush.
