Joss standard shaft

I've never played with a Joss cue before, but I've seen one that's in the running for the deal of the centuary.

I'm just unsure on the shaft. What do you think of the standard shafts in terms of deflection, consistency and feel. What would the direct competitor be too.

Joss makes a good cue. If you like the cue and it's straight at a price you like go for it. You don't have to buy an aftermarket shaft to play good pool. If no one can play pool with their standard shafts, then Joss and other manufacturers would only make the butts.
 
The recent Joss shafts I've seen in the past 5 years have been HUGE. Like 13.25mm, with a VERY fat taper. I'm not sure if this is representative of all of the newer ones or not. But if that is not what you are after, I'd highly advise you to ask the seller what the shaft measures both on the ferrule diameter and the bridge area diameter.

Thanks for the info. I have the option to select different ferrule diameters from 12 to 13.25mm. My shaft at the minute has a 11.5mm tip, made by a very respected snooker cue maker here in England. Sadly he passed away a few years ago and there are no others like it. I think ill get the 12mm and learn to adjust to the taper.

I don't understand the problem. Deal of the century? Buy it.


The "standard" shaft if stiff. I believe 13.15mm. But they can be ordered as you like, so we have no idea what shaft the cue you are talking about has.

In addition, they have introduced a new shaft, you can read about it on their web site.

Is this a new cue? Used? Old shaft? New style? You don't really give enough information to say.

One thing you do say is that it is in the running for "deal of the century". That's a pretty bold statement, but taking it at face value I would wonder why anybody would hesitate to pull the trigger.

Its an old used cue, from the 70's I believe but has the newer shaft on it.

I haven't seen a vintage joss this cheap before and although it is a great deal I'd be parting with a lot of cash hence why I'm a bit hesitant.

A seventies JOSS?!

You do realize what that is?

Janes...Scruggs...Stroud...some of the greatest names in cues turned that pool cue.

EDIT: I have wanted to retire my old JOSS for years but could not afford another. I have shot with this cue since 1985 and she earned me my first degree. If this is a real bargain I would jump at the chance. I have shafts.

Lol I'm no expert on vintage cues but cues I've seen from this era with the craftsmanship detail and the history involved I'm sure it should cost more than the asking price!

There is a special thread for block letter JOSS cues in the gallery. When you get pics you should post then there. It is a spectacular thread with some amazing cues. Some of them make my old JOSS look like a broom handle. LOL!

I play with an early 2000's Joss with the shaft turned down from 13.25 to 12.50.

The newer Joss shafts I've played with have a short ferrule and a very different feel. I must admit I don't like the way the new ones play, but to each his own....
 
Joss makes a decent cue and the shafts hit well, but the butts warp and there is no warranty. Mine warped stored in a case, in a 70 degree environment and was brand new. They told me there is no warranty against warping. Others have told me they had the same problem with their Joss. Sucks to find out you own a junk cue, when you spent money on a name brand like Joss. I should have bought a different production cue, like a Mali or a Viking.
